  • Just a couple of minor tweaks in final preparation for my departure on 25 April 2022. Made a sturdier jerry can hanger and fitted a galvanised steel toolbox to the rear rack.

Just found your videos and loving them so far.
Should try coating inside the box with some brush on truck bedliner. Stuff works great for waterproofing.

Thanks for your comment, Chris. Much appreciated. Great idea to use truck bed liner to waterproof the box. It would also strengthen it to a degree. As it happens, the silicon sealer did its job for the duration of my ride although not probably as robust.

Forgive me if you've updated your panier racks further, I'm watching your videos in order so I haven't gotten there yet.
I like how nortz17 has added a piece from the bottom of their panier racks to the rear rack mount. It triangulates the whole thing and really adds strength without adding much weight. Hopefully this link works. A clear view of the setup is at 1:42 into the video.

Yep, I suppose that would give it a bit more rigidity. However, I never had a problem with the arrangement I had, even after the bike fell over onto the righthand pannier it bent slightly in but was easy to straighten out. I'll take a look at the link you provided, thank you. That said, I won't be loading the bike up with panniers again. I have since removed all the fittings I added for the trip and am repurposing the bike as an urban 'get-about'.
