    You have no idea what you are talking about. I worked in the roads and traffic industry for most of my life and I have designed Traffic Control Plans related to that sort of mobile work you observed. There are so many errors in your assumptions/observations I won’t trouble you with detailed comments. I would say that the safe work methods used in that work are required by both National and State standards and have been refined and improved over the last few decades. One of the main reasons they are so onerous is due to the deaths of road workers caused by inattentive careless speeding drivers. This is a first world country where workers safety is highly regarded and not left to chance as it is in some of the countries you mentioned. Your hatred of Unions is irrational and way off the mark in terms of being the sole cause of these safety measures. My experience is that the managers of both private and public roads/construction organisations are the drivers of these safety improvements.

      Well, I appreciate your comment and you are certainly entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. And no, you certainly didn't trouble me with any details. What you also failed to address was the question I posed in the video as to why 5 vehicles were required to paint 1 stripe versus 6 or 7....I guess we'll get there soon enough.

      Thank you, mate. I really appreciate that. As for picking up where I left off, I'm not sure that I'd regard that as a 'legitimate finish'. A lot of people have suggest that but it just wouldn't provide the same sense of accomplishment for me. I'm really good with covering 800+ kms. Like you said, it's a major accomplishment in it's own right. If I had initially set out to do just that, I would regard my walk as a significant life achievement. In Vietnam, you can and should travel more in the outback than along the coast. Everything there is much more interesting, more original, and the traffic is not so stupid. Kon Tum is good, of course, but Da Lat and Buon Ma Thuot are many times more interesting. And from Hanoi I highly recommend going not straight to the south, but getting at least to Halong, or better yet to Van Don. This is where the most beauty is! 😊😊😊

      @PostieGeezer 5 месяцев назад

      Hey Jeff, Thanks for watching and your comment. Yes, the stabbing incident took place at a mall just a couple of kms away that we frequent. In fact, my partner was there just a few hours earlier in the day of the incident. Just a tragic event that was very close to home. We really aren't used to stuff like this here in Australia. We were riding 200cc Lifan (Chinese) bikes. All up, they were pretty good. I'm not the cruiser type, so that took some getting used to. They also had a very weird "circular" gearbox that worked in the opposite direction to all other bikes I've ridden. Heel-toe gear change. Speeds in Vietnam are slow because of traffic and road conditions, so 'performance' didn't feature on the ride. I think my top speed for the whole trip would have been just touching 80kph (50 mph)! All the best, mate.

      @@PostieGeezer Thanks for the update and I'm glad everyone is okay on the homefront. Just my 2 cents: in light of political/social conditions there (as I see it as a red blooded American) - given what happened there during COVID (absolute tyranny in my view), citizens of Oz need to restore there unhindered ability to own fire arms if you hope to restore/retain any liberties/freedom. Here we have that right as a fail-safe against a despotic government (which we currently have.) I'm convinced the +400 million arms in the hands of US citizens is the only reason the USofA hasn't fully fallen to Communism, and the only practical reason we may still have a fighting chance of restoring the rule of Constitutional law. Best, and again I'm glad you all were not harmed in that mall event.

    I can understand your level of concern on this one. The first line of defence for children, particularly at that age are it's parents. It was the parents responsibility to have dressed the child appropriately if she was this concerned about others in an open space. Clearly there's more to her rationale, maybe from her own experiences, but man, to be in public, essentially minding ones own business and to have accusations like that brought up is scary, but also angers the hell out of me. The police, thankfully saw it for what it was, so my hat goes off to them for that, but there's elements of the law that still would have tried to run that up the flagpole to see how it flies, and its that that has me remove myself from any situation where a misunderstanding such as that can occur. Glad it worked out in the end !

    Great timing, am in for the GT4 in June - Hanoi to Hoi An. Interesting to see what to expect. Anything equipment wise (or anything else for that matter) you would suggest be brought along, not supplied ? Enjoying the antics so far, round-abouts look 'adventurous' to say the least !

    • @PostieGeezer
      @PostieGeezer 6 месяцев назад

      You're going to love it! Hanoi to Hoi An covers some of the most spectacular scenery, so good choice on doing that tour. As far as equipment is concerned, I would avoid taking heavy protective gear. Of course that means an 'off' will be painful, but no one in Vietnam rides with protective gear (except the VMT crew and some riders on the tour.)...it's just too hot and traffic conditions are really slow...even if HECTIC! Just my opinion, NOT ADVICE 🤣. I rode in MX jumpers. They are nice and breathable and protect your arms from the sun (it's brutal!). They also dry quickly and pack down small in your luggage. Take sunscreen to protect your neck or use a bandanna or something. Take an open-face helmet or just use one of VMT's. They have plenty. The only thing I would ensure I took along is a rainsuit. We only had 1 day of rain and although the VMT support vehicle carried enough rain gear for everyone, they really aren't usable. They are like ponchos that fill with air as you ride. Also, don't take heavy adventure or MX style boots. Regular road-style boots are OK but I simply rode in my hiking shoes...far more comfortable. Hope that helps. You're going to have a blast!

      I understand what you say about becoming a lazy rider on the bigger bikes. A year ago I stepped down from riding a BMW R1200GSA and Ducati Multistrada to a Royal Endfield Himalayan, believe it or not. I'm loving it. It's gutless and does nothing brilliantly but it's comfortable, gets along and has loads of character. It's very basic aside from ABS and, on my model, fuel injection. Still have my Postie of course...that's a keeper!

    Darling Causeway used to have a lot of truck movements, not sure if that’s the case now. There are also a lot of dirt access roads running parallel to the railway line and you could use some of them. Also Darling Causeway has negligible sealed shoulders and poor sight distance in some sections but it would be safer than the GWH.

    • @PostieGeezer
      @PostieGeezer 7 месяцев назад

      Yes, I intend to mount a 'visibility flag' of some description, Michael. Not sure exactly how right now. I may use a 2-section fiberglass fishing pole that will a) provide some height, b) be able to be disassembled when necessary and, c) be strong enough.

  • @freetv77
    @freetv77 7 месяцев назад

    Heavens.... Adding the third wheel (and avoiding having to balance the trash bin while pushing) is the way to go. Good design with the bracing and third wheel in front. . Also, adding the handles is a great idea but you might need more padding than just a throttle grip. Something more like gel bike seat material may keep your palms un-bruised and dampen the pounding that will likely go up your hands to the wrists, to the elbow, and even the shoulder. Thick gel padding might act like shocks between the bin and your hands. Also, you might want to think about wrist support - like something you strap on if you sprained your wrist to keep it from bending/moving too much. Also, the handle extensions will create torque at the joints of the original handles (where they join the bin). Are those joints super strong? If not, what happens if that joint breaks? Without handles, you have to push the body of the bin and that would be bad. If that area isn't super strong at the joint, you might want to think about adding bracing or something to strengthen the joint so it "can't" break as you torque the handles while pushing.. It will likely weigh 100ish kilos, and going uphill or turns might create a lot of stress on the joints. Also, if you used a single "long" pipe that connected both handles through the length of the bin (instead of two small individual pipes, one for each handle), that might reduce (with equal and opposite) torquing on both joints. Just a thought - don't know if the bin would allow it. I had a similar concern with the axles and wheels. Is there a risk that the axle/wheel breaks their mounting hole? If you lose a wheel (mount) it is game over. If that area doesn't seem indestructible as-is, then additional bracing might be in order. Anyway, I'm always thinking about "what happens if this or that breaks".? You said the tires are pneumatic, what happens if you get a flat? (Green slime?) Sorry for the arm-chair engineering, but as a co-worker once told me, "if it's worth engineering, it's worth over-engineering".strength Thanks for posting!

  • @geoff6566
    @geoff6566 7 месяцев назад

    Hi again. Just watched your second bin video, the third wheel is a good addition to the equation especially with the extra volume /weight of the bigger bin, at first I thought the swivel would be unnecessary as most of the journey would be straight but with that much weight it will be invaluable for tight places , but as you say it does allow the bin to track sideways on a cambered track, could it be pinned in the straight ahead position for long straight stretches to alleviate strain on your shoulders keeping it true , ( either a drop pin or locking clamp ) just a thought 👍 looking good with the training hope it all works out 💪

      Thanks, Geoff. I have looked at the possibility of using a locking pin arrangement. However, there are bearings in place that would then be interfered with. Since I widened the handles, the bin is a lot mor manageable and I haven't noticed the issue as much. I've done about 50kms now with the bin carrying varying loads and I'm really happy with how it tracks. Thanks for your input. Keep it coming. 👍👍

    Gavin, make sure you use at least 1 flashing red LED light for following vehicles. The small ones work well if attached to the back of your cap/hat and maybe you could mount it below waist level on the bin. You will probably have to walk on some road shoulders Both paved and unpaved. They will mostly be sprayed seals which are rougher than asphalt so it might pay to do some trial walks on them to assess how it feels and rolls. Interesting project, keep up the progress reports, from a former Ulysses Adv rider.

      You're right in a way, Michael. However, I walk with noise cancelling earbuds and listen to audio books for the most part. The noise is something that is a part of the wheelie bin experience in a way. I am sure it will quieten down a bit once I have all my gear stored inside. The empty space above the water containers I am using for weight at the moment acts as a bit of a sound box. Thanks for watching.

    Hey mate, I don't mean to sound like an idiot but how does the fuel get from the lower side of the tank over to the other side where the fuel tap is, the reason I ask is I'm thinking of doing much the same sort of thing some time this year. Not to go traveling but I live in the Great dividing range and just would like to ride around the mountains on a bike, not just a bike but a classic postie bike, it just looks like it would be a great fun thing to do. What in the world is a "wheelybin"? Is it, what we call in the States, a "Shopping Cart". Seriously, I've never heard the word "wheelybin" until this video. :)

    • @PostieGeezer

      🤣It's a plastic trash bin with a pair of wheels that's rolled out to the kerb on trash collection day. Here in the land of Oz, they generally come in 2 sizes 240L (just over 60 US Gal.) or 120L. I'll be using the small size. Obviously, all my camping kit, food, clothing and camera equipment will be inside the bin. www.tigerpak.com.au/wheelie-bins.html?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA7t6sBhAiEiwAsaieYvGvXwOSckPcQo2AW4dv1ebJEJp6_4FZsO5_WcyxlaAZyBE5xmSKfRoCmJ8QAvD_BwE

      So you going to push a trashcan full of camping gear 1000kms?!?!? Heavens. Around here if we see someone pushing a trash can we cross the street and avoid eye contract. The FIRST thing I would do is add a second set of wheels in the front so its more like a cart. I'd also get a note from my Dr. stating I was of sound mental condition and keep it handy in case local law enforcement agents question your sanity and try to lock you up. Heavens. Please bring your drone and post regularly. @@PostieGeezer

      Hey mate...You had me chuckling away at that post of yours. 😂🤣 Yep, I will be making some minor mods to the Wheelie Bin but I don't want to depart too far from it's recognizable (especially here in Australia) form. They are truly iconic. And yes, I do sometimes question my own sanity when I take on challenges like this. I certainly will be bringing my drone and other filming kit to VLOG and record my adventures along the way. Will I make it???? I honestly don't know, but I don't want to die wondering 🤣

    Hello PG . Just watched your video on the crazy next adventure, and I’m suitably impressed. A few years ago I started making plans for a similar trip ( I’m in Uk ) so it was meant to be our standard end to end trek ie lands end to John 0’groats so similar distance to your planed trip , Anyway for this I did some prep and trials with a Uk wheelybin, I presume ausie bins are similar,un fortunately as with many things life and covid got in the way and it didn’t happen but a few of my failed attempts gave me a few insights at adapting the bin ,if any of these findings would be of use to you drop me a message and I’ll share them gladly , yours Geoff 👍

      Thanks for your comment, Geoff. What a pity your attempt was capsized by COVID. I had to wait out the Australian COVID lockdowns and state border closures before setting off on my Postie Bike ride around Oz. I'll be grateful for any ideas or advice you have to offer. Like I said in my video, the idea has only just formed and there are many moving parts to think about and resolve over the coming months. All the best, mate.

      Hi sorry for delay ( working away ) some of the things I learned whilst planning, as you said the wheels are totally unsuitable, I tried putting better wheels on but to get anything suitable it increased the height and made it too unstable so lifting the axle got back some stability, finally I made a steel box frame that came high enough to allow handles similar to a wheelbarrow, it took a while to get the angle right but once sorted it gave a comfortable position to push and pull the bin , for most of the miles I tried it was easier to pull and in the end I modified an old shoulder harness to attach to the frame where it leaves the bin this meant I could alternate between having the weight on my arms and my shoulders which helped with fatigue in one place , it took a while to get the balance right as I wrongly built the first model without loading the bin , off course once the load was in it changed the dynamic completely ( back to the drawing board) so big lesson learnt, start with a rough load estimate of what you will be carrying, as for loading I found having stuff in long bags with cords attached so they could be lifted and lowered into the bin helped especially for the stuff at the bottom of the bin and a series of tie down rings at the top inside the lip to secure the cords to , I also made a shelter from some old shot corded tent poles which slotted onto holes on the top of the bin and then pulled over the handles to form a shelter from the sun , the outer ones where angled outwards to give tension on the canvas and tied down to the ends of the handles with para cord the center one was left lose to form a ridge in the center and give extra head clearance, the tension took a bit of getting right until I used really light weight fly sheet material from an old tent , this proved far more useful in the sun than the rain but even the modest sun we get here causes problems when you are sweaty and working hard pulling, I considered fitting lights and finally decided on bicycle lamps as they where much lighter and easier to manage than my first system ( I found I just needed to be seen not see where I was going) not intending to move at night but just in case . In summing up the most important thing I learned was to get the balance , load and ergonomics sorted early on and get the weight as low as possible to avoid the weight pulling against you as you walk , I hope some of this helps , obviously you will face different conditions to us in the Uk , good luck , Geoff 👍

      Hey Geoff, I've been really slack in getting back to you. My apologies. Thank you so much for your input. You are absolutely right about the bin behaving very differently when loaded. I also thought of the cord idea to reach stuff in the bottom. The bin is also useful for hanging a tarp over in the event I need to camp out in bad weather which is a definite possibility. I'm training with my current set-up and think it will work quite well. My biggest challenge will be pushing it up over the Blue Mountains to the west of Sydney from day 3. It's a long 50km uphill slog. After that, it's still very up and down until I'm about 450kms into the walk when things flatten and straighten out in the deep outback. All the best, mate.

    Just started watching your round Australia Postie trip. Just purchased one myself. Was your tank from an XR250 ? I have fitted one to mine. Question I have is, was your tank already red ? I have tried painting mine but it just bubbles after few weeks. Thanks for the videos and insights, will help with my planning. Happy 2024

      Yes it was from an XR250 and was already red. If you look at my bike, it was more a matter of function over form. I didn't really care about the aesthetics too much. Where do you plan to ride once yours is set up?

    WOW, what a challenge. When you walk on the open road, always walk facing the traffic so you can see what's coming, most people get hit from behind. Lesson from kindergarten by the police when I was 6 years old.

And then the next day you'll camp in a tent at a roadside pull off... you're a hard one to figure out. Anyway - than you for posting. Now I've been around the continent with you twice on a Posite (via youtube) and now Tazi. Love it - thank you.

      Merry Xmas to you too and thank you for your comments and feedback. Yes, I live in a strange universe and you're right, 'eclectic' does kind of describe it. My military background enables me to adapt to pretty ordinary conditions so when I travel on my own, my needs are very basic and simple...NOT the case when my partner and I travel together ;-). Glad you have enjoyed my travels. I'm heading to Vietnam in March 2024 to ride form Ho Chi Mihn City to Hanoi, so stay tuned. All the best.
