  • Bluestocking swooped late to grab the Group One honours in the Cairn Community Games Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh.
The Ralph Beckett-trained filly twice finished second at the highest level last term, beaten half a length in the Irish Oaks by Savesthelastdance and just a neck by Poptronic in the Fillies & Mares Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot.
Having opened her campaign with a six-length Middleton Stakes triumph and with the
Curragh ground easing all afternoon, Bluestocking was sent off a well-supported 11-10 favourite in the hands of Rossa Ryan, who managed to get his mount settled in behind as Lumiere Rock set the early gallop.
It looked as though Kieran Shoemark had made a race-winning move as he went for home on
Emily Upjohn two furlongs out, quickly building up a couple of lengths advantage.
Bluestocking was only just getting going, though, and she reeled in the leader through the final furlong, eventually passing the post half a length clear, with Content nearly four lengths further back in third.
“It was great. Rossa had an inkling that Emily Upjohn might go forward at some point. In a way it helped us, in a way it was tough for her to run down but it gave us something to aim at,” said Beckett.
“It’s great to get it done. Last Irish Oaks Day will live long in the memory for the wrong reasons but it doesn’t matter now.”
Beckett opted to leave the cheekpieces off Bluestocking this time and explained: “We thought about it but last time she travelled so well through the race we thought we’d leave them. We have the right to put them back on of course.
“I thought she was always going to get there in the end, I thought she was always going to pick up, as she finds plenty under pressure.”
Bluestocking was cut for a range of summer highlights and is 5-2 favourite with Betfair for the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and the same price for the Yorkshire Oaks.
Beckett added: “You’d think the Nassau is the right place to go and she clearly enjoys York, she’s run well twice there, so the Yorkshire Oaks will probably be a good idea as well.
“I don’t think trip is that important, I just think conditions have to be right and they were today.”

This filly really hasn't run any bad races yet to date at group level. Bluestocking's been knocking on the door since last season of breaking through with a major win. Last season she was 3rd in the Ribblesdale Stakes, 4th in the Yorkshire Oaks, and 2nd in both the Irish Oaks & British Champions Fillies' & Mares' Stakes and was right there with a very live chance of winning both Irish Oaks-(beaten a 1/2 length by Savethelastdance) and the British Champions Fillies' & Mares' Stakes-(beaten a neck by Poptronic). She looked outstanding on her seasonal debut at York winning the Middleton Stakes by 6 lengths and I thought she was really impressive making up as much ground as she did in the final furlong on such yielding ground on a filly of Emily Upjohn's caliber. She's been going the right direction since last season, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Bluestocking pick off another Group 1 win or two before the end of the flat season.

Totally agree, backed her both times this season. Bred to be better 4yo. If she meets Emily Upjohn again, in a truly run race on better ground, she will beat her much easier next time. The Nassau at Goodwood, could be her next race.

Really fancied Emily Upjohn and was going to have a decent wager on her until the ground went against her. Most of Emily Upjohns best performances have come on good to firm. Actually if the race was on Friday she would have appreciated it more and then again the price would have gone.

Rossa Ryan is way better as a jockey IMO - for a punter he is a good jockey to have on your selection.

People giving Shoemark a hard time. Talented rider. If anything, was too handy and kicked on a bit too early. Ground was against her as well, Looked like a bog out there. Give the fella a break

I backed Bluestocking, won despite race been falsely run, ground not ideal. The horse was always getting there, you could see by Rossa's body language he was always confident. The Shoemark haters, plenty of those on youtube will blame him, but when run they run against each other again, will be exactly the same result.

Why do commentators insist on calling all winners that get in front late on as 'timed to perfection' ?? Sure, some winners are clearly ridden to lead close home and can be very much be described as such, but that was absolutely not the case here - the runner up was cleverly ridden and poached what looked an unassailable lead, which resulted in Blue Stockings having the kitchen sink thrown at her from some way out and, much to her credit, she managed to overhaul the leader late on. Not a cat in hells chance at the 2f pole that Rosa Ryan was sat there thinking 'I've got this completely under control and i'll just pop her head in front 5 strides from the line to win cosily'. It was neither lucky nor perfectly timed, it was a good ride on a very good horse that overcame a pretty tough situation.

The race was falsely run, crawled round and sprinted last 2 1/2 f. Rossa was intially caught out, but was still confident he would catch Emilyupjohn.

Emily upjohn did too much early from a bad a draw and maybe shoemark went a bit early.

He was 4 wide in a 6 runner race. He then processed to shoot for home 2f too soon, when Emily had the race at her mercy. Bluestocking didn't sprout wings, Emily pulled up because she thought she had finished. That was the worst ride I've seen this season. If this idiot is riding for Gosden next year, I'll be amazed.
