10 years later and still helping people out. I just used this video to wire up my in cab winch controls and it works perfectly. Thanks Matt for all your helpful videos and everything you and Colt do for the wheeling community!
Glad it helped
@@coolnick160 just added safety and im glad I have it on mine because I have bumped my in out switch a few times getting in and out my rig and if it was always powered it could of been bad!
Great Write Up Matt!!!!
No Jeeper should be without in-cab winch controls.
Having the ability to spool the winch in or out at your finger tips from inside the jeep is an absolute luxury! If you guys haven't done this yet,, GET TO IT!, it's easy, VERY cheap, and best of all will make your recoveries much much easier.
(ok, well that and it looks cool, and you'll have some bragging rights too!)
It is tradition to run the cable up the hood and through the window! How dare you change the sacred practice of old!
You can also coat the solenoid terminals with liquid electrical tape to keep the connections from corroding or random garbage from shorting it out. You can get it from a lot places including Walmart.
I enjoy your videos! Maybe see ya on the trails some day!
I know this is an old vid, but I'm installing my winch and have a 500 amp relay I bought off eBay that I'm using to fully isolate the winch via an in-cab standard rocker switch (with LED). Just a heads up in case anyone wants their winch to be tamper proof from outside the vehicle. Also prevents accidental shorts etc. There are PAC 500 relays easily sourced online for about $25-$30.
Thanks for the vid dude
Good job. I would wrap two wires together with a drill and run those to the cab. Then use an always hot spot on the fuse box to supply power to the switch and light but your way works.
Thanks matt. Im no expert with wiring so this video helped me alot i wired mine up all is good. Hate that remote. Been watching all your videos keep them coming! Oh... lets build a YJ!! Haha
Love your videos and am excited when I see you have a new one in my subscriptions. Keep up the good work!
Definitely handy to have. I have both a remote & in cab control and I agree with having a master switch. My master controls power to both controls. Because my winch uses two SPDT solenoids it's basically idiot proof, you can't short it out. If your winch uses a four SPST solenoid system, you need a transfer switch to isolate the winch controllers.
I wouldn't say I'm a fan of the four solenoid design, one sticky solenoid can cause a lot of fireworks.
I also have a disconnect at the winch.
Man just found your channel. I've watched probably 6 or 8 videos already and subscribed. Great work, great videos . Best off-road channel I have found!!!!
You can simplify the wiring by using an on/off switch with an embedded LED. Eliminates one hole and one wire. Not a big deal, but I think it makes for a cleaner install on both 3 & 5 wire winch setups.
I love the idea and you did a great job of explaining how to do this - as you always do. I have the perfect wire to do this but don’t know where to get the switches and light. Can you help me with that?
Its also an idea to put 'in' and 'out' buttons on top of your your winch as well, because you can't always see the co-driver in front of the truck. When you have these buttons the co-driver can pull in the final meter by him self, so his fingers wont get stuck because you can't see them, the co-driver has more control of what he's doing this way
Hi I'm Thinking Of Putting A Switch On My Jeep, I Got A Smitty Built 9500 Hopefully It All Goes According To Plan And Not Burn My Jeep Down
Did you ever do it?
great vid! Short sweet and just what I needed!
Great idea! but at no point did I see a fuse in between All that wire web
There's no fuse in your winch remote. The wires going into the cab would be low current.
Better add a fuse to the control wire off the battery, if it gets pinched, you'll have a nasty fire.
I Was your one thousandth like.
Did you put an inline fuse for the12v running in the cab? I'm currently doing this mod (as well as the jcr brackets thanks to your vids) and I thought it would be a good idea...
will do when I redo the green one
You need to add one more switch that is a spindle lock, on the square remote if you hold both buttons it locks the spindle so you can safely hold a load on your winch with out stressing the motor.
Nice work. Always enjoy your vids,
FWIW, it would be helpful to follow standard wire code colors in the event some poor schlep inherits your mod some day. Green should never be used for anything but ground.
Fuckem, my Jeep. That sonofa bitch can figure it out after he kills me for it.
Not in a car. Black is negative.
Greens are positive.
There is no Ground.
Matt, could you do a video on how to install a transmission cooler for the black cherokee? I'm wanting to put one in mine and have no clue how.
thanks man
another awesome vid!!!! Yes. So what gage is the extension cord? Would you recommend that over just a spool of wire (since they are together?). I got a few that I dont use, so could be an easy way. ( and how about extension cord wire for lights? then I dont have to buy any ha ha)
manual lever is the rear, electric switch is the front.
Im very thankful for this video... a couple weeks ago i was in a jam while up playing in the snow and had to winch out, but my controller plug in hole was broken apart inside. Ended up using a pair of pliers to jump the power from one terminal to the other. Now i got a fancy in cab switch thanks to you. I do have one question though. Do you have issues respooling with the in cab switch without a buddy making sure it doesnt wad up on the spool?
you should always have a buddy out there spotting you while winching anyway, the in cab switch just makes it easier than searching for the remote.
BleepinJeep agreed there definitely I can't tell you how many times I've had to search for the remote...this way is definitely better
thats good to know!
I think I would prefer a dead man switch. Is there a reason why you went with that one?
Great idea and detailed double explanation. The cheap plactic/rubber remotes fall apart overtime and usually at the wrong time too......................
Hey matt its matt. Wondering what you grounded the light to. Everything else makes sense but wondering what a good place for that would be. Thanks
you'll have to fill me in on the details
Wal-Mart Bro... you'll always need an extension cord for something!
hi there is fund the video very helpful and thank you. I have a question for you I have a champion winch model and it's 4500 pounds and I don't know if you're familiar with those ones I cannot see this solenoid box for it and also I would like to setup a remote control for that particular model so please if you can help me
I hooked this up as you showed. It worked on test but now all I get is the on off light to work. Winch won't go in or out with new switch or hand held plugged into box. Any ideas?
I probably would use nylon insulated, if not heat shrink, connectors. what happens if you short any of your connections of your shade tree wiring techniques? any fuses or circuit breakers to protect your vehicles electrical system from your winch? Besides the main vehicle fuse?
+PatrickNJ winches have inlines fuses in the control box.
thank you
I'm soon to install a winch on my new truck and was wondering if a guy could safely splice the in cab toggle switch with the original plug, that way if a time arises where i needed to operate the winch from outside the car the stock plug would still be connected and ready to roll? I've had quite some experience with automotive wiring and can't see why it wouldn't work but an expert opinion would be appreciated.
Andrew Area yes, thats exactly what I have done here!
do u have no power cutt off switch? im wondering if i need one i broke the lever off of mine (the big oll switch that connects to the solenoids) i cant find a replacement part anywhere and am trying to come up with a safe alternative... any ideas?
you mean a battery cutoff switch? check amazon.
The reason winch manufacturers don't give anyone this feature is safety. It is definitely safer to be outside your vehicle where you can clearly see what your winch is doing, and you are out of the pull path of the cable. Also the winch is completely deactivated when the pendant is removed. That said, I can see why someone who uses their winch a lot would want this.It would save considerable screwing around.
All you need to do is install a relay and a switch (or tap into a circuit only energized when the vehicle key is in the ignition, to prevent someone from tampering with your winch if your in need of a safety mechanism. Just some simple wiring and a few common electrical components. everyone should know and understand electrical wiring, wiring diagrams, and the ohms law to start adding electrical components on your vehicle. I've seen people melt the insulation off entire wiring harnesses because they had not protected the wires and connecting the positive and negative wires backwards..oops!
+inkydoug If you are offroading by yourself or you need to be in your vehicle to steer it this is a perfect fix.
Now fast forward would you have hooked this to the relay box you built for the switch panel in the zombie jeep instead of the way you did it in this jeep?
no
BleepinJeep makes sence thank you
What did you ground the light to?
what is the shifter next to your park brake? i feel like it might have something to do with the transmission but I'm not sure.
+Josh Edwards 4x4 shifter
easy as pie
i think if you haven't already use a relay and keep the power out of the cab if no relay your switch will get too hot and the small wires will underpower the winch
charles philippe look again
corrected thanks
i hve a prob with my 94 cherokee while driving it shuts down
appears electrical any thorts
hi from new zealand
Anybody know how many amps the in/out toggle switch needs to be?
I can't seem to find that little red light. Do you know where you bought it?
Eric Chaput if you search "led pilot light" on amazon, plenty different styles show up
5mm diode light with a holder. just bought some on amazon
what is the switch or knob where the e brake lever is at for thanks
the ox locker control
Are you sure that "solenoid" isn't a relay?
I hope my wife doesn't need the extension cord soon. lol
howdy zealander. most likely that is a bad cps, check out my video on it.
did you miss her?
Nice video. I have a question. I already have a warn power interrupt kit and I had already picked up (and started wiring a warn cab switch kit) problem is, it does not all jive. I asked the same question and posted on the Tacoma forum then I saw your post. Any thoughts? www.tacomaworld.com/threads/warn-winch-cab-switch-install-question.583435/
@bleepinjeep where’d you get this kill switch kill with the 3 way?
Why not wire less
Hmm...probably not a great location for your solenoid/contactor for your high current drawing winch.
you have a Miller welder but a Rough Country winch! C'mon!!
fuse
Mat put up another video, so don't bother me I'm in the garage !!
APOLLO 14
Needing some help here matt
uh, where was the t-shirt girl at the end of the video?
Holy monotone
I usually see this guy to be of reasonable intelligence, but not this time.? SAFETY! all those amps tiny wires. if he hasn't seen a wire melt he will now.
It's a switch, and doesn't power the winch, it powers the solenoid. Used it for 10 years or more with no problems and will do the same on my new Crawler
+dannypstl423 You obviously don't know bleepinjeep do you lol
He knows what he is doing.
Those wires are pushing 12v nothing more.
It's only providing power to the solenoid which is like a big relay. The big wires go right to the winch. Jeez.
