nice one Helen I always had a problem with skies and your technique makes me think that I can also apply it to hair which is also another difficult task!
It's interesting that in 2020 - soon 2021 - Topaz Mask AI has still not solved this problem to the satisfaction of a critical pixel peeper. The problem is that even with 5 pct residual fringing or distorted edges around the foliage the swap is a 100 pct give away. I wonder if the problem will ever be solved. We are really talking about a border problem where the difference between values of what we want to keep and what we want to lose is close to nothing. Hard to compete with the human brain and its experience - even for the AI wonderchild. Good demonstration though, Helen.
Frank, that is a great option too. Sometimes however it just doesn't "cut the mustard" so to speak so this is an alternative solution to have up your sleeve.
Helen.........try these: On a dublicad layer > Image> Apply image RGB channel from the first layer from the bottom..on darken mode....I'r cool heheeh... Ciao,Ciao selections....
You need to open the two images in Photoshop. Go to the landscape image and choose Select > All, then choose Edit > Copy. Now go to the sky image and choose Edit > Paste. This will put both images as separate layers in the one document. And you should be good to go. Let me know if you need more help.
Thanks Batt, it is a little tricky but hopefully if you stop the video from time to time you'll be able to keep up and get the result you're looking for.
I have to tell you something. Your video has inspired me. I'm heading out to get a second monitor so I can have your tutorial running on one screen and Photoshop running on the other. Maybe you've created a monster, albeit a somewhat good monster.
Oops ;) you will love your second monitor and wonder how you ever survived without it! I held out against buying one for a long time but from the day it arrived I have loved the extra space and being able to do multiple things at a time.
Chaz Madge Yes, if you have a version of Photoshop that supports it, it is a good choice. If your Photoshop version doesn't have refine mask or, if it doesn't give the desired results, then this is a good option.
Helen Bradley There is no "defringe" in refine mask, from experience you would still be left with a white fringe. I think your method would work better for this scenario.
Wow - thank you so much - this is the only tutorial I've been able to find which actually addresses this particular problem effectively.
I’m so glad you found this. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Best technique ever! This is something I struggle with constantly. Thank you so much!!!
You're welcome. Thank you for your kind words and for stopping by my channel.
After two hours of trying to blend the sky with a tree watching videos, I find you who made it so simple - thanks
Great news. Thank you for commenting.

I'm glad I could help! Thanks for visiting my channel.
1st) Use darken layer mode frequent sampling off the sky. Either brush or clone. 2nd) Subtle foreground color tone toward blue.
Helen, this is excellent! I had to pin it and share with those following my Photoshop board. Thank you!
Beautiful! This has disturbed my existence for years now haha. Thank you!

Glad to hear this Andre.. It is a good technique to use when you have troublesome skies to replace.

very nice and simple, thank you I haven't got a Kindle
Very nice and simple thanks
I always use layer> matting > defringe (or the other options) to fix these problems.

Thank you! I will give this a try. Apply Image is such a powerful tool.

A possible more efficient way is to use blend if.
+Jacques V Good call - that is indeed another way. Unfortunately it didn't work on this photo - that's why I went looking for another solution.
Nice... a little tough for a novice, but still nice.

De-fringe in refine mask Easy
