Breaking Down Luka Doncic's 73-point performance: Bad Defense or Good Offense?

  • Luka Doncic scored a franchise and career best 73 points on Friday night against the Atlanta Hawks. I decided to go through most of those possessions -- we don't need to watch free throws and a stray transition leak-out, do we? -- to see how he did it.
    Spoiler: Luka's night wasn't from a lack of effort or creativity from the Hawks' defense. That dude is just GOOD.

    The reaction to this game showed how many people want to discredit Luka's game. It's sad that people would be offended instead of in awe of what we're witnessing.

    As a Die Hard Mavs fan and Mavs Pre Game Show host. I thank you for highlighting that Luka earned all his buckets either through a great offensive scheme or just because Luka is a pure bucket. For the national Media to have a panel to completely disregard Lukas historic performance was so disrespectful to building this game. Kobes 81 was never met with hate or disregarding. We all should have celebrated Lukas performance and I was disappointed by it that it wasnt the case. But thank you once again.

    Such a depressing reaction to this game honestly. I feel like Luka or Jokic could drop 110 and the next day nobody would care just because they're unconventional scorers. They're not jumping over people, Joker will just take his open shots, back you down, or take that goofy Sambor shot and end up with the quietest 40-14-18 you've ever seen, and Luka will hit you with crazy handles at 0.75 speed, accelerate, decel, hold, and somehow turn the double-team into a wide open lay. It looks easy. It looks like the other team is bad. But when everyone looks bad against a player, it's got to be the player.

      I'm pretty sure Stephen A. was calling it a layup line and that idiot Wilbon compared it to the all star game though Stephen A. agreed. Wilbon was just as bad and literally said "if anyone can score 70 is it even special" 10 guys in the history of the league have done it and he acted like if Luka did it that means anyone can do it now.

    This breakdown is like Luka, underappreciated. Needs a million views to enlighten people from the so called NBA Analysts who have the same "They're good, they're bad" formula of breakdown. They even have Perkins for clout. Stop watching garbage and watch stuff like this, people!

    I don't see many people say "nobody plays defense" I see them say they're not ALLOWED to play defense and the league is getting more and more tilted in the favor of offense which is just objectively true...
    Luka is an amazing player and he'd do well in literally any era but he's not dropping 73 in the 90s.
    Look at the amount of illegal screens and blatant travels by the old standards, the whole "gather step" alone completely ruins defenses because of the crazy amount of extra distance an extra step gets you, without that rule a bunch of Lukas buckets would have been travels.
    Multiple things can be true at once
    - it was a very impressive performance from Luka
    - people hate on Luka and try to discredit him any chance they get
    - the Hawks did TRY to play defense
    BUT ALSO
    - the rule changes make it vastly easier to score and harder to defend
    There isn't a sane argument anyone can make that its not easier to score now than it was in the past, there just isn't.
    You literally have 3 of the 5 best players in the NBA (Giannis, Jokić and Luka) literally confirming it to you by outright saying its harder to score in Europe, why is that? The rules.
    There is no amount of talent that can overcome rule changes as drastic as what has happened in the past decade or two.

    • @mouseinthehouse_
      @mouseinthehouse_ 5 месяцев назад +4

      That's just ridiculous. You're acting like a couple of niche rules are the only reason Luka is effective as an NBA player. The shot making, the jump shot, the finishing through contact, the change of pace, the strength, the vision and the play making ability don't just go away because some rules change.

      The Euro game is different, what isnt debatable is that the highest quality players are in NBA not Euroleague. The best Euroleague teams have maybe 2 guys that could play in NBA,thats it.

    • @williamroper5422
      @williamroper5422 5 месяцев назад +5

      Regardless if you think it is easier to score now then in the 90s it is not easy to score 73 freaking points. For this performance to inspire a bunch of bitching about defense and rules instead of being appreciated is beyond unfair and pure hating BS.

    • @AhmedBouali-wf6zh
      @AhmedBouali-wf6zh 5 месяцев назад +3

      Totally agree but change the decade to 00s that's when rules favoured defense more and objectively basketball now is more fun to watch than that.

  • @bigred9991

    The most fucked up thing about Lukas performance was the Hawks spent the entire game letting him go 1 on 1 and they were cool with him scoring a lot but when he started to get close to breaking Kobe's record they started denying, trapping, and even triple teaming him at times to prevent him breaking that record. ATL didn't look like a team that wanted to win. Even the announcers were saying they hoped ATL would spoil his game by preventing more than 81 and by trying to win the game at the very end. Announcers were the biggest haters I've seen on a broadcast.

    Greetings from 🇬🇷, Nikias! (Or, if I may use its original form, Νικίας! Is the name of religious origin? It always surprises me when I find Americans with random 🇬🇷 names.)
    Had Doncic shot his average percentages (50%/37%/77%), this would have been a 50-point game. Being that his shots were falling that day, he turned a 50-point, to a 73-point game! That's all there is to it! He took just 33 (!) shots!
    I'm not saying there is a "racist agenda to bring down the white man", but there is a very obvious bias in people's inability to register white people as good players. They've gone on national broadcasts claiming that "Jokic is not known as having a dominant post game" (!!!)... when the guy was shooting ~70% from the paint! Americans' obsession with numbers, and the ease/peace of mind they provide, is upsetting. I just heard that if LSU's Quarterback runs a 4.30 seconds, 40-yard dash, he'll move from No.3 to No.2 in the Draft... WHY is the third guy on the Draft doing the combine?! You have video of him playing the game for 2+ years! It's like this thing people say about Jokic/Doncic: "he isn't fast, he can't jump... but somehow he gets it done!" Everytime I hear that, I think: "he isn't good at the High Jump, he isn't good at running track... but he's somehow a good basketball player... by being good at basketball! Who would have thought?!"
    There are fundamental differences in how the game is viewed, between regions: here, Messi (the shorter, SKILLED guy) is the "natural", and Cristiano (the taller, "sportive" guy) is the "hard-worker". I feel like in the USA, people view somebody like a Morant/Williamson as the "natural" & Doncic as the "guy who overachieved". It may sound stupid but... it's called basketball, because the objective is to put the BALL through the BASKET. The skill of (ball) throwing (whether by hand or foot, lobbed or straight) is the differentiator, at the very top.
