This is a real working mirror running a software that I built.
I'll continuously be updating the mirror and if you would like to stay up to date with this project, you can always follow me on Twitter: / ryan_nelwan

I kinda feel sorry for John.
+Potato King "I'm more than just a name to use in your demo, I have kids to feed!"
-John probably.
+Potato King "Oh hell yeah a request"... "Awwww."
+Potato King fuck john. He's an ass.
+Potato King why?
+CzarVentus and we won't be working with him again.
This kid is the future

I got to say, this is one of my favourite Smart Mirror on RUclips. He really outdid it with how he wanted the mirror to look like, the control the temperature in his apartment, the way in lowering and increasing the volume appears on the mirror, and especially the detail he put in into the uber suggestion during a scenario of being late while getting ready to go out in front of the mirror. Love it.
can we install an app that generates simulated toothpaste splatter?
Let's see where it takes us.
+schmoyoho or maybe face swap lol
+schmoyoho or auto songify
Wow its schmoyoho
Voice command for this: "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, open RUclips"
+DH Shawon the only problem is, the quote "Mirror, Mirror" never existed it's actually "magic mirror" if you try to search it up, you won't find any video if it being said "mirror, mirror" in the movie. We have switched universes D:
+Scrazelope Mirror Mirror (2012) is an actual movie.
TruXter Jones ik but it's just weird that it was never even called Mirror Mirror
Carson Parks
What are you gonna do? Downvote me?
+DH Shawon he is gonna kill ur boyfriend. watson's the name?
John is going to be so mad when he sees this video
+xlyesterdaylx Why?
+RoyaltyFreeMokey Because he cancelled John's fare, I suppose
+xlyesterdaylx Who is John?
+xlyesterdaylx if you go to R/DIY several people have me these...not sure why this is is going viral...
+Joaquin Soto the Uber driver!
Finally men have a reason to spend hours and hours in front of the mirror, too.
Seb J. Whoever hahhahahaha
Skyrim Extra Special Edition
Great point.... LMAO
oh no!!!! now my girlfriend will be there for days!!!!! not hours but dddddaaaayyyyyyaaayyyyyssssssssssss!!!!!!
Can it Hub?
Not a specialist at all, but it'd be great if you succeed to implement a infrared or laser layer (or that type of thing) 1 or 2 mm over the actual glass, so that you can use the mirror without actually touching it and avoid fingerprints. This way, this would be a great bathroom mirror. Ordering a Uber without leaving huge fingerprints and marks while brushing your teeth or getting out of the shower would be amazing ! Also, loving the UI. Keep it up!
+TheSoundYouNeed could also be a kinect type camera hidden in the frame for easily implemented gestures!
+TheSoundYouNeed Love your channel :) Keep up the good music.
I love how the expression "ordering an Uber" has become almost more standard than "calling a taxi". I guess all those harassment videos gave Uber some deserved exposure.
Also, I agree that the mirror getting dirty is a downside, but I have a feeling that a setup where you're not physically touching anything will feel quite awkward. Maybe there's a type of glass or other way to reduce smudges and fingerprints.
Really cool work, GangstersGiggle!
Having a sensor like you mentioned but implementing the option of toggling it on and off for preference and situation would be a real neat addition though.
+TheSoundYouNeed And so the government can see you in the shower
Do I smell an MIT scholarship?
+MrHow2fail He's probably way past that point in his life.
+StoneyX213 LOL i'm not 42.
+MrHow2fail mate, all he did was create his own software and most likely did some unique workings with current hardware to make an awesome interactive mirror that has interactive surface and a beautiful UI. You want into MIT? You pull apart a clock and put it in a pencilbox.
+MrClae Bro have you done such a thing? I am ready to fly you to the Whitehouse and meet pres obama ASAP.
+aakksshhaayy only if you have my Microsoft Swag Bag at the ready
he didn't show the app that tells "who's the fairest of them all"
Im Dying 🤣
The monitor behind a mirror isn't anything new/complicated/amazing, for those of you who think it's a genius idea. What I DO think is very cool and nice though is the software part of this mirror. He has a great looking and very intuitive design. Good job!
TheGrayWolf81 Dude, the most here thinking about the software part not about that monitor with reflecting foil...
That's what I thought too. The design and gesture control is amazing and very intuitive. This guy just really knows what he is doing!
This is incredible. Kid, you are going places.
+theblur yeah those after effects are dope right. lol its nothing he built its obvious, that its a normal mirror thats why the camera never moves.
+DeuceDrop that would Rank1 Troll for sure. fucking hilarious though
GeekyNet im just saying finding a troll who knows how to do special effects is much more likely than finding a 17 year-ish old kid whos revolutionized mirrors and somehow on his own managed to make a bunch of apps that are identical to already existing ones. also the sound went weird when he turned off the music, im on to him and his shitty sound editing
+DeuceDrop - You think this is somehow a high tech mirror?? Its just a computer screen behind a one-way mirror. Hundreds of people have made the exact same thing. They're all over the internet. This is the first I've seen with a touch interface but thats not difficult. Also, the reason why it look like he's opening up apps that are "identical to existing ones" is because thats all it is. Its an interface that opens up other peoples apps. Its not like he wrote them himself. This is an afternoon worth of coding in a weekend worth of construction. None of it is revolutionary, or new. It just takes someone with some time and interest. The "special effects" trick to fake this would probably be more work than actually building it.
Ron Berry more work but far less money and time if you know what you are doing, i never said i believed in anything he was doing im sure i was the one calling him out for being fake, its simple after effects work might take a couple of days, and yes he did say he wrote those apps, so thats just more evidence of him being full of it
Poor John.
+bestieswithtesties John never existed.
Wow. The mirror looks great, the software runs so smoothly, and the UI is so simply and beautifully designed. Great job man.
I didn't know I needed this in my life til now. Keep us updated on whether or not you get a kickstarter going. I'd be all up on that.
You shouldn't be nervous at all. You've done an amazing job!
think of all the fingerprints on it tho
imagine trying to clean it and shits going spastic, temp UP/DOWN, volume UP/DOWN
+Nik Nak prob a feature to ignore input for cleaning purposes and wait for a specific gesture
+Caleb Rivera or you could just shut it off XD
+Dan Ingbritson Yeah gestures without even touching would be even more awesome.
+Jiecut RandomPlace I agree, a nice cmos camera would be sweet
Wow! Really impressive. And I also like the clean UI with graceful spacing etc. Most tech experiments don't get that right.
Love the UI, I'd make it voice activated so I wouldn't have to worry about finger prints.
+Dreighen Just add a little touch pen to it and your all done with your fingerprint worries
+Karl Alfred Why, oh why would you want a pen in the bathroom? Voice integration is far more ergonomic and contextually suitable. This isn't a tablet you're working with, it's something you're using passively while getting ready in the morning.
didn't expect you to put it in bathroom
Is it possible to make the video window larger? I think that would be great addition, the ability to resize the window.
+Daniel Burgess That was the first thing I thought also. Amazing though all the same.
+Daniel Burgess He has confirmed on reddit this is possible.
+Daniel Burgess If he's programmed all of this so far, it wouldn't be that hard to implement something like that.
+Daniel Burgess apparently its fake. bc you cant run some apps he show on non apple products, he has a record of using effects before and no smudges on the screen
@@wltr2302 it's not fake, check his newest video
You mean to tell me someone on youtube called RealGangsterGiggle made this device?
+ATypical No, but RealGangstersGiggle did.
+ATypical Exactly what I was thinking lolol
The design in this is amazing, it looks complete already.
haha well done sir.
Mikey Bolts hellooo
Get an IP lawyer ASAP, you may have blown your chance to patent it by showing it to the public
+101publicenemy What you think this is the first one? LOL
+101publicenemy pretty sure i've already seen these being made commercially
+101publicenemy TOO LATE I HAVE BEGUN THE PROCESS
+101publicenemy This tech isn't new, only the software is (and it's wouldn't really be hard to make for existing developers)
+Ace Cat don't be a dick about it LOL he's just one of today's 10,000(+?)
so will the mirror be full of fingerprints and smudges?
+JoeJoe The Capybara I thought I was the only one thinking about this
+JoeJoe The Capybara Fingerprint-resistant materia?
+JoeJoe The Capybara this kid built some amazing tech and people like you feel smart for finding one issue wrong with it.
+Nate Mann an important issue, you ass
+Nate Mann Nobody's saying that this is a bad idea, chill out. I don't think it's unreasonable to take issue with the idea that an expensive piece of technology will probably be full of smudges and little flecks of toothpaste within 24 hours of using it and thus require constant cleaning (that may require specific supplies due to the fact that it's electronic). Chances are that the creator of this design will address this in the future if he hasn't done so already, but until then I don't see any problem with pointing out potential problems with said design.
This interface is sleek as hell man good job!
Yeah, I very liked
RPi, large monitor, one way mirror, and IR frame to enable touch. Entirely possible. Love it! Well done.
Dont be nervous. Well done presentation. People like you are great, and you don't need to be worried about what people will think of you. Outstanding man!
gonna be the dirtiest mirror in the history of the world
+IAmScooterDude720 My thoughts too
oleophobic costing.
I think the point of the mirror is to be a quick and easy multi-tasker for your morning routine. Wake up, fix hair in mirror while checking weather and putting on music, head out the door etc. Unless you want to use the touchscreen function for an extended period of time, putting on gloves every time you want to adjust the volume or quickly your email/messages seems like a waste of time and money, and at that point you might as well just pull out your phone.
+Milphide - "Tactile surfaces", do you even know that that word means? A mirror is quite literally the opposite of a "tactile surface".
Besides, using gloves kinda defeats the purpose of this mirror. Use a grease resistant surface coating instead.
+IAmScooterDude720 I don't think it's gonna be a problem, my guess is that over the mirror there is an extralayer material that does the touchscreen function so it might not get as dirty as the actual mirror which is underneath.
in depth DIY please. I want to make one but don't know what to do
Looking forward to seeing this in production/kickstarter, never mind the haters & keep focused on what you do well!
holy moly the future is now
No it was yesterday. what took you so long? ;)
You are about to be filthy rich! Congratulations!
+Benjamin Brigante Yup. This will be on many peoples got to have list.
This is, by far, the best smart-mirror i've seen. It looks like a large touch-screen monitor with the bezel removed (and replaced with wood), Raspberry Pi 3 hardware (guessing), and either a flavor of Linux or Android 4.x+. It's the launch software i can't identify but i swear i've seen it before somewhere else, just can't recall the name.
Please demonstrate a video of how you built this amazing magic mirror
Im sold! Where do I place my order?!
are you the real backyard scientist??
jef3000 yo mama *No, he's just verified. Of course he is the real one.*
People made it before him. its nothing new
but poor john
you sir are the original reason why i got into writing my own software.
Wow man! That is GREAT work! I'm really excited to see where this goes!
Wow, This is amazing great job dude
Ur making touchscreen mirrors
Im losing to tic tac toe to my 9 yr cousin
This is awesome, I hope this guy makes a fortune
This is badass, dude. Can't wait to see further improvements and new features!!
😍😍😍😍😍, this is so beautiful! I know the tech isn't new or anything but I love your design so much!! its so minimalistic and simple!
But i hate looking at myself inthe mirror. The UI is dope, make a non mirror version
***** as I said, with that UI.
+Dan Devlin sure, he'll make one just for you
So just a tablet?
Jajapina123 Yes, wit that UI as I said.
Ronan RiemanJohns Reallyyyyy? YAY! Definitely the other 11 likes don't want one either
You just trolled the fuck out of John.
Wow, this is really sweet. The UI is vastly superior to even some consumer grade products. And you built this all yourself? Super talented :)
Congratulations on this amazing achievement. Good luck to you in your future endeavors. You're going places.
omg this is what I need in my house! do you use raspberry pi?
late answer but yes he used a raspberry pi
and also magic mirror modules
@@balllallalllalllallalhqbal2798 are you sure? he said in the how to build video, he build it with objective c & c++
@@balllallalllalllallalhqbal2798 Nope he built his from the ground up. Really did a nice job too.
It's funny how some people are eager to criticize a talented and dedicated person to feel better about themselves. I wish you a lot of success with your awesome invention, sir! ^_^
+Jaden Yuki surprising how your litterally blown away by something people have been doing for years and the same stuff used on cars since 2006. But dont let that fact get in the way of your ignorance. The guys good. He made his own UI for the thing and didnt rely on open source resources like MagicMirror². Were not jealous. Were just cringing on how people like you think its something revolutionary
I NEED this!!! Watching youtube as I do my hair in the morning? Yes please!
finally software that does what it should do without any problems and it's fast too. Please make more of this stuff. Please, you can create a control system that never have any problems or falters
If this would be made available to the public, I would buy it instantly.
You should add a voice command so that if you say "Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all! the mirror can be all like, "you are RealGangstersGiggle".
amazing dude, i would love to build one. looks like it would be a fantastic learning experience
You got this. Keep it up and you’ll be in everyone’s home helping all around
You need to start crowdsourcing campaign asap!
why you gotta do john like that. he wanted to give you a ride.
I know right!? John was probably like sweet I can get the guarantee for the hour...then cancel... he was probably head back to where he gets pings and missed an exit just for your ping.
I thought this video was a joke and you were going to put in some comedic element into it...
I'm actually really shocked and impressed! This is awesome :O
this kind of UI would look great for the Tesla Model 3 HUD that is being speculated so much. You could do some serious work. the UI looks nice and futuristic. awesome work.
really cool :) what about pricing?
+ChronoYinger Well, uh, his home location was on the screen for a moment..
+IRClevor LOL
hahaha
Wouldn't surprise me if this kid had a touch-screen smart-toilet that emits wifi with a built in VPN feature.
@@jasonking4821 xD could be possible with some extra features
Add wi-fi capabilities to this device, and you can convert this to a an interactive coffee table. Dude, this is crazy.
Im pretty sure this is using a raspberry pi (with his own programming) so it has wi-fi and bluetooth
I'm making a coffee table with the raspberry pi 3 what I need the most is how to make it touch screen
he used uber on it man im sure internet is running
@wally
You need a touchscreen?
People made it before him. its nothing new
dude, this is pretty damn cool. you're the kind of person that inspires lazier people like me to look into making cool stuff. what i'm saying is, good job, man, you invented something awesome
sickest mirror I've ever seen! amazing job!
His temperature is set to 46. If this is Celsius, he's gonna melt but if it's Fahrenheit He's gonna be fucking cold. What is going on?
Nah, 46 is niiiiice
The entire platform is in beta, prebeta at that. The purpose, in part, is just to demonstrate how the os works. Integration with other systems, like any platform in development, almost always comes secondary. I think he's just trying to show that the Smart Mirror could have a lot of versatile and practical applications.
That's why hes wearing a jacket.
Only problem I can see is smudges.
This is exactly what I was looking for to study for arts. Fantastic!
Love the look and feel of the main UI!
One critique - you ought to build in sensors so the user doesn’t have to physically tap the mirror surface. Don’t forget that the primary purpose for a mirror is to ...well, be a mirror. From the dawn of time, cleaning fingerprints and smudges has been the bane of most people’s lives.
show us how you made it
Raspberry Pi son
Look up "magic mirror rasberry"
nice mirror ahmed
this is an amazing project. I would love to build this for my pad, any chance you're sharing?
I feel like you had just opened the reddit app we all would have understood what was happening.
Can you scale videos to take up half the screen etc?
Good work. That looks like the strong beginnings of a genuinely useful device.
Awesome invention, but make it voice activated so you don't have to touch the mirror.
what brand of jacket is that?
asking the important questions
:)
That's freaking awesome, you're getting places kid, congratulations!!!
Absolutely amazing, great work man! :)
But can it play Crysis?
Derek Chamberlain I bet it can play Doom
Yes, if the computer powering it is powerful enough. But it's probably a Raspberry Pi, unlikely to play anything more than Minecraft InfDev.
@@Xevion Minecraft 1.14 (the roughest/laggiest version of the java version of the game) can run on a raspberry pi 2 (the latest pi is the 4).
Just take my money already
I want to build this!! Great work man!
You need to hop on kickstarter ASAP.
more like the first thing you'll see is finger prints.
still cool though
Justin McNeil wash your hands.
except fingerprints come from natural oils on your skin and have nothing to do with how clean they are...
babyfacefister
babyfacefister clean them harder
Shit if only someone could invent something to clean a mirror with.. Maybe someday, huh? 😂
now if only you could shrink it down so it fits in your pocket and add the ability to make phone calls.....it looks really cool but i only look in the mirror an average of 30 seconds a day. Maybe if you make one that replaces my rear view in my car.
u talking about a mobile phone????
litterally already done. Its been there since 2006 or something and you havent even done anything about it.
Great work man. Looks great and I definitely want one.
this is legit the frikin future love it bro you did a good job
Le show jaune !
😌
Jok-minimoiz :D
Who the hell is John?
the uber driver the guy cancelled
How did you manage to use a reflective surface, yet it is a display screen as well???
Great idea still wondering how to get the volume control and touch in able on the one I'm building
PLEASE DO A TUTORIAL
Luke Karam
Search diy smart mirror on RUclips
Zeaiclies yes, but this guys software is next level
Luke Karam
It is just writing your own script and GUI.
It looks Linux based, so Python or something similar.
You could do one with Android or even KODI.
Android would be pre built, thus a lot easier.
+Zeaiclies
I recently started my smart mirror build how would I get the android program onto it? Any help would be appreciated
Hope you have some patents on this.
+Victor Alam You can already buy mirrors that do all that and more....
The world needs less people who think like you.

Not possible. "Sue everyone, bill everyone, commoditise everything, screw ALL the things"... is the order of the day. So, no.
Also, this idea has been done many times. Good luck with that patent.

Ok, Cupcake.
Incredible ingenuity and creativity, keep that up!
Can you make a how to video cause so far your model is the best I ever seen
Poor John :/
I didn't know Tony Stark had a son.
Well done kid. Keep going at it and i wish you success in accomplishing your goals. A waterproof version of it would be also awesome for the bathroom.
Best smart mirror I have seen so far awesome work.
Going to need a lot of Windex!
*smudges mirror *
If I was to put an on demand quick start heater for my bathroom would I be able to install this and a nest in the bathroom alone? so I can change the climate in the bathroom only?
What framework/libraries did you use as the foundation for this project?
