James, I’m 70 years of age, and remember when this was released. I am still captivated by this. I’ve been playing since ‘75, can’t read a stitch of music except for chord diagrams but managed to figure things out . I recently had surgery on my fretting hand, and recovery has been slow and taxing. So I took the leap and decided that the best therapy for my hand was Stills, and Suite; and then I found this amongst your tutorials. Wow is all that I can say. Mysteries revealed. THANK YOU. My faith has been restored.

From someone that has never played guitar, (or a complete song on any instrument) I can tell you the pace of your lesson/video is absolutely perfect. I literally tuned my guitar, paused it long enough to see the fingerings and frets and within an half an hour, and one time through this video, I could play, and sing, this entire song. (minus the solo stuff) The only thing left is learning/practicing strumming patterns and noise dampening. It makes me really happy. One of my all time favorite songs.
SIDE NOTE/Story : I bought a cheaper Martin HPL guitar because I wanted to learn a bit. When I came to this song and tuned down I got a little frustrated of having to change tunings back and forth. Obviously, I needed another acoustic so, I bought a Martin GPC-16E. Anyway, long story short, this video cost me $1600.

Still's mother confirmed to me a rumor that Steve Stills was born right up the street from me in Texaco, IL.
When I asked her she was astonished and said "Why Stephen doesn't even know that because we moved to Carmi as soon as he was born!"
A really old grandmother in my hometown in Mt Vernon, IL attended the birth of Steve Stills and she was the only witness.
It was just a coincidence how all of this came together because I owned an antique shop with Still's mother in Stinson Beach.
It absolutely blew her mind when I asked her.
Later, I managed to bring three Carmi watermelons to them, one for him, his mom and his sister, because Steve Stills grew up on Carmi watermelons.

James, Wow! I’m 75 years old and have been playing guitar since my college days in the 60’s. This has always been at the top of my list of favorite tunes. My friends and I would sing along to “Suite” although I never learned it on guitar. I knew it was a strange tuning and was not really equipped to tackle it. I’m rediscovering guitar now (mostly I play piano) but your excellent teaching of the song has inspired me to try and give it a go. Thank you so much and I’ll definitely check out the other videos on your site. Fantastic work!

Laying here in a hospital bed looking for something to learn while I’m on the couch for the next month or so and decided this one is next. Spent 17:51 laughing my ass off! I’m in tears. GD I miss you JJ! I sincerely hope you are well. I got a decade or so on you but in another life I suspect we could have been best friends or at the very least drinking buddies. Somehow we were shaped with the same personality. Maybe it’s just an age thing but I too find my patience wearing thin with the “I want everything easy for me mentality.” My guitar lessons started with learning to read and play from sheet music and a phonograph needle. Try taking that approach Tubers. Your commentaries and lightheartedness are priceless and sorely missed. I wish the best to you and Mrs. JJ. Thank you for cheering me up.

Wow , well, hats off to you, sir! You've really done the hard yards on this one. It's surprising how little there is in the way of actual different chords, but Stills sure got a lot out of 'em songwise. From the instant you banged out that first lick I knew I was in for something special Great trebly sting tone which is exactly how the songs sounds. It goes to show you don't need a Martin to get this song sounding pretty darn as good as the original. It's all in the fingers and getting on that rhythm and getting into 'flow'. You have clearly proved it. REALLY enjoyed this as the song has always been a big fave of mine too!
Looking forward to looking at your other posted material. HUGE thanks, JJ.

@James James. Hey there JJ, Thank you for posting this lesson. Man does this one bring back memory's. I really love this one from Stephen Stills. In fact, if it wasn't for CS&N/CSN&Y I probably would never had bought an acoustic guitar, let alone any electric guitars ''and so on and so on and so on''. So this comment will be a tad longer, so please bare with me, just as I'll have to do.
As a kid, Stephen Stills had an enormous impact on my life, along with Crosby & Nash added into the mix. But no one plays like Stephen Stills, except Stephen Stills. Don't get me wrong. The Beatles impacted in my life musically but it was CS&N Acoustical creations, so they were on the top rung... With all that said, I happen to catch a CS&N concert from 2012.
So lets get this party started because I'm not finished yet.... After I watched that video, then looking at the column to the right of the screen, there had to be another 7 or 8 different concert video's of SJBE by them but it didn't end there. There had to be about a dozen other artists, both known, along with a lot of unknowns. But just a few lessons & yours is always my first choice. I believe there were a couple of 12 year olds doing their version of the song. But by now, I was about ready to head back to the 2012 concert, this band called like ''Someone & Foxes, or Foxes & Someone playing their rendition of SJBE's. The girls were young & were accompanied by a couple of older guys, men actually. Although they were pretty good, the guitarist didn't do any justice playing in all major chords, I just had to go back to that CS&N concert. It was Stephen Stills that brought me back. He plays his song differently. Just as you show on your video, or as you said, just as Stephen played it.... So that's my story JJ, thanks again for posting it because it sure was a blast from the past on this sunny Sunday afternoon......

One thing that I respect and always appreciate about you James (and your alter ego pvtrickster) is how you always give this important work away for free, and never have one of those caveats that say "for the full lesson go here and join my website". Some of these guys act like THEY frigging wrote the songs themselves. I think it's a bullshit move to use other artists material to try and make a living from, especially in a public forum such as this. (playing covers out live is a whole different deal). Now I'm not sure how it all works as far as monetizing a site goes, but I have never been asked to pay something to you and yours for access to any of this music, so thank you for that James and thank you to Mrs. James who it seems to me is a very supportive wife I'm also blessed to have one who fully supports whatever i do when it comes to thr music-making-she even fixes the guitars and equipment when it breaks down.. Of course, I'm not quite as spoiled as you are bro, with all those great and very expensive guitars but I do have my share of gear and everything I need. So once again thanks JJ and Mrs.JJ

You’re the best, James. Exactly what I need almost every time. I think “gee, I wonder how that song goes” and, oh look, I can learn it either in one playthrough or in a lesson that is rarely much longer than the song itself. And you’re right to lecture people a bit about the tuning on this one because that’s about 95% of learning the song. I just need an extra guitar to keep in that tuning because it’s kind of a pain!

The speed/pace/tempo of your lessons is just one of the reasons why you teach songs better than anyone on the web. Perfect. I also appreciate your approach to many solos......"it's kind of in this area, wing it and you'll sound okay" works every time. Just plant the seed of where I need to be, and I'll figure it out. Thank you.

Great job James. Thanks for going into it. Glad I finally got to play this one and read the history behind the songwriting.

that was faster than a mid-engine German car with no governor on the engine (you know they throttle the engine so it doesn't go faster than the 911)😂 kidding aside, a huge breakthrough after 45 yrs playing! this was always an untouchable song, thanks so much! love your lessons and your channel!

Thanks man! Brought it all back, quick for me! I have a guitar specially tuned for this song, 4+20, and carry on! I do then ask in this tuning. Appreciate the "pickless" playing also!

Really great stuff James, The pace was great and as you stated its for those who have been playing awhile, which is probably most of us. I learned a much harder way to play this years ago and as a result stopped playing it all the way through as it just wasn't fun. You have made it fun again, Thank You! Keep them coming your teaching approach resonates with many I'm sure.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for putting this out there. I've wanted to know how to play this song for decades, but never got serious about finding out until now (I mean, I was a teenager when it first came out, for crying out loud). The alternate tuning was the biggest thing, then the chord shapes and finally, how to play the last part of the song. I've been having some fun with this. Again, thank you for taking the time to do this.

Awesome job! My all time favourite C S N song! I really love that your going through this Woodstock era. So many great songs it was a magical time for music. A tough time in government though. But so many kings and queens of singer songwriters were born throughout the turbulent times.
I hope your arm isn't bothering you to much. Good luck and Peace man!
