    *Genesis played four consecutive sell-out nights at the 80,000-capacity Wembley Stadium in July 1987. The four nights were a record at the time, and only bettered by Michael Jackson five years later in 1992 when he played seven nights. Genesis were likely the biggest band on the planet in 1986/1987, as in addition to these four nights, they had a number one single in the US charts (Invisible Touch) in 1986 and had five Top 5 singles in the US charts from the album Invisible Touch that was released in 1986. Also, this specific concert was the first ever concert recorded in High Definition.*

    As a DJ I used to play the LP at 45rpm and mix it into ZZ Top Sleeping Bag. Dropping Mama back to 33rpm just before the Collins vocal's come in. Surprisingly the dance floor stood for it. I must admit it helped with 4 Cerwin Vega Earthquake bass bins in the club. Happy days!

    As you suspected the song is not about mothers. This song is about a young man obsessed with a prostitute who is not interested in him. He has an Oedipal fixation on her, and insists on calling her "Mama." It is based on a book Phil Collins read called The Moon's A Balloon, by David Niven. In the book, a young man falls in love with an older prostitute who does not return his affections. The song was a hit in the Uk and around the world, but did not do so well in the USA. Would love to see your reaction to ‘Firth of Fifth’ which has Phil on drums and Peter Gabriel on vocals, from the Prog Rock era of Genesis.

      Should our next Genesis/ Phil request be Invisible touch live from Knebworth or In the cage medley from the Mama tour?

    • @sunnyclearweather8894
      @sunnyclearweather8894 2 года назад +2

      @@francesmcdonald5107 Well Invisible touch is Genesis biggest commercial hit and the Knebworth performance was amazing. I would say the cave medley live from the mama tour but it's sort of long I'm not sure he would want to do it being it's so long

    Genesis drew FOUR sellouts at Wembley for this series of concerts! Imagine opening a concert with a song about a guy hooked on a hooker. Well, Genesis did. A creepy laugh! The dude is obsessed! This is not about your mother.....I hope. "Mama" is a female who is teaching and satisfying Phil's character. Take another listen. In fact to clear up any misunderstanding watch the fantastic official video. It won't be 'hard' to understand! But a GREAT concert. The next song, ABACAB is a banger of a jam. (FYI - need to turn down your mic slightly and the artists up slightly)

      Wait! He should do Like China from the No ticket required concert! The only reactor to do it is Ryan Rebalken ,and he loved it. When Ryan said " your getting a little aggressive Phil" that became my favorite youtube reaction video bar none.

    • @francesmcdonald5107
      @francesmcdonald5107 2 года назад +1

      @@sunnyclearweather8894 Like china 💕 I never think to request that one because like you said, Ryan is the only one who's done it. Ryan is hilarious. I loved his reaction to Phil licking the microphone in the Mama video. I feel like Ryan really gets Phil.

    • @sunnyclearweather8894

      @@francesmcdonald5107 I love like china because Phil's accent is sort of cockney, really thick. You normally can't detect his accent very much but in that particular song it's adorable. Plus, the lyrics are sexy. I feel like in the No ticket required performance he was just a little extra hyper 😂
