I've already participated in splatfests with both OTH and Deep Cut, but never with the Squid Sisters since I never had Splatoon 1 so it wouldn't be right for me to leave them out, especially since it's possible this is the last chance for it.
I have a theory. So we know that splatfests impact the next games, but I think this fest might decide if those games happen at all. My idea is that if past wins, we get all the old games on switch/switch 2 with some new updates. If present wins, this current game continues to be updated. And we get a fully new game if future wins. But also only Nintendo truly knows the answer

It's probably because: 1. They were both on the same console, so there wasn't as much of a reason to pump out a sequel. 2. They wanted to take their time and make the game bigger and better than its predecessors.
Splat1 came out in 2015 and the switch released 2017 and the game was a hit like 3/5 of people who had a Wii U owned it so they wanted a sequel out quick. They didn’t want splat2 to get killed by its successor so they gave it 4 years. Now splat3 is getting the same treatment as splat1 cus splat4 is gonna come out with the switch 2 whenever it drops next year
Well my best guess is cause of Covid but also cause they got a whole staff rework if you compare both credit scenes from splat1 and 2 which have the same staff team meanwhile splat 3 got different staff
The development team for Splatoon 2 and Animal Crossing used to be the same team, but the team split up into two groups. The more experienced developers took Animal Crossing, and the younger ones took Splatoon. That probably contributed to the delay leading up to three.
