I've tried all sorts of grease I could find before and nothing really worked very well, there was always some residual "stickness", by trial and error I found out that the plastic the TWCS is made of is the main issue.
By luck I had some tape around and noticed that it has very little friction with the metal rail, so I put it between the two and it worked perfectly!
This is a really good way to fix the stickiness for those that can't afford or can't buy the magical Nyogel stuff.
Thanks to your cheap fix, my throttle now feels 16000 times more expensive. I love it.
I've used brake pins and caliper grease on mine, the results were close to Nyogel, except brake grease is cheap and easily found anywhere. However, you can not use any grease. Search for synthetic greases and it must not contain MoS2 (moly) or lithium, as they generally contain petroleum hydrocarbons, which will weaken the plastic polymeric structure (because of that you CAN'T USE petroleum oils as WD40 or spray lubes - even if they don't have petroleum fractions like silicon lubes, the vehicle will do). Silicon grease is not good as it will not dampen the movement. Synthetic brake grease will do - as long as they are not moly or lithium based. Ceramic brake grease will dampen and reduce noise.
Brilliant. Even just adding the tape without regreasing is amazingly better. I kept my tension a little higher than you have it so it won't gravity fall like yours, but all the sticktion is gone, no more jerky inputs! Just smooth and responsive with the tiniest effort. This is certainly THE best mod for this throttle and only takes about 20 minutes, a Phillips screwdriver and some packing tape. *mindblown*
Thanks for the heads up! Even this makes a huge difference indeed.

I listened to your advice and my god, just the tape makes the throttle feel so fucking good i cant stop playing with it. thank you friend
I just did this mod. My throttle used to be very grabby, mostly as you push to start it moving. After the mod, it works perfectly and now has a very hydraulic feeling to it which is awesome. It took me under a Star Trek NG episode (approx 40mins) playing in the background to open it, apply the mod, close up, with time to spare. Thanks for the video🖖
I was just about to buy the Etsy kit for my TWCS but decided to try this mod first and I'm blown away. I put an ultra light film of synthetic brake grease on the rods and used some tape like shown. This think is now dampened and precise. I cant believe it
Absolutely amazing, I didn't even need to grease the tape for it to feel 100x smoother. Would definitely recommend it to anyone with this throttle, even I with absolutely zero mechanical experience was able to do this mod. Thank you!
Blown away by how well this works. It Makes a cheap throttle feel wayyy better. 100% percent improvement.
Not all heroes wear capes. Thanks for sharing :)
Easy Fix like butter. FYI for watchers thinking of buying this HOTAS for ED. The TARGET software has issues. Even the profile for ED from Thrustmaster reports a HID error. I did some dead zone modifying in the TARGET software and it came up with a fatal error when launching.
Fixing the stick throttle is easy but should not be needed. Not like Thrustmaster never heard of it. Disassemble the throttle. Clean off all lube with rubbing alcohol. Buy a can of WD40 "Specialist Silicon lube" at auto part stores or Home centers. It is safe on plastic, metal and electrical components - DO NOT just spray it in the slot. Once the throttle is apart try to mask off the areas that don't require lubrication.
My other wish would be to have back lite buttons instead of a glow under the joystick when moved (useless). Everything is black or burnt orange and hard to see in a darkened room.
Thank you!! That was a life saver (and a money saver)! Works like a charm
Despite having suboptimal tape and it taking forever because I'm a total noob I just did it! Thanks for the great video, feels better than ever.
I cleaned off all the oil and put on some graphite lubricant. Worked well.
GREAT MOD!
100% Satisfied
this actually worked really well. cheap throttle now feels like and expensive one. Thanks!
**Please read this before unassembly the unit** Hi, i just tried your "mod". Then i realized that there is a screw that we can use to setup the resistance/tension of the "spring" (the two metal bars at 0:29). This particular screw is visible from the external (when assembled, no need to unassembly) - it is the one that "does not come out", it is the second one at top center. Turn it clockwise to increase the resistance, couterclockwise to lower it. So i removed the tape
and i had the exactly same result as you! Also, i think that you achieved this result just because you did not tighten the screw very much after re-assembly!
Not really, the mod os mostly to remove the initial resistance to movement, to make the movement more "linear" or whatever is the correct term. Before the mod the spring force only made things much worse in my case.
@@bodifx idk, in any case this video made me investigate on it, and I fixed it with success, so thank you ;)
i completely removed the screw and "tension spring" still had the initial resistance to movement. now i am using tape and silicone lube, with spring back on... working much better
Did it with synthetic grease I had lying around. It's not perfect, but it's an amazing improvement. Thanks!!
Holy s***! Was THIS close to buying that expensive Nyogel stuff from a german website! This works so well, thank you SO much! Took me maybe 10 minutes to do. Maybe I'll try to get some teflon tape from work, see how that works!
I wasn't completely convinced, it's not thaaat good I thought. Found out i left out the top part, behind the rails... Oh well, gotta take it apart once more. tomorrow.
so, how good the teflon was? And which kind did u use ?
best help guide on this hotas ever made, legend
nice i used teflon tape instead of transparend tape and high density grese CX-80 TOWOCX and it woked just amazing! On max tension it feels like almost hydraulic
thx man!
I just adjusted that screw you mentioned and now it slides just fine. Thanks for that sugestion!
I tried both. Applying the tape made it more smooth than adjusting the screw. With the screw adjustment, I still encountered the problem with breaking the initial resistance felt when force is first applied to the throttle. With the tape/lube combo, the initial resistance was absent. I recommend against the use of petroleum lubes, including lithium because petroleum lubes break down rubber and plastic. Synthetic lubes, including dielectric grease, doesn't.
The four people that unliked this video are the ones selling the $30 mod kits online, hehehe. They can suck it all day long.
Thank you. I use tape+ WD40 and throttle work like dream. This only take me 20 minutes. Refueling in DCS is so much simple. U dont fight with your throttle. I mostly fly in Ka-50 and cyclic is uber precise now beacuse your metod of fixing.
Let us know if WD-40 has any long term issues interacting with the tape or plastic, since it is petroleum based. I have be told silicone grease is better for plastic parts.
@@machalot But i apply this on metal and on tape not on plastic. So far is good and work like dream.
This works great, also will need to re-apply after some time. If you need to,like I did, you can reduce the pressure on the tension-er plate screw. Made mine very smooth.
wow night and day difference !!!
What i used is microscope greas "Zeiss HF200".
Did this thanks to you, works like a charm.
Ahh nice, thanks for sharing! Will try this today.
Just finished mine, bit fiddly with my large hands, but oh my the difference. Really it's how it should have been out of the box, but hey ho. Many thanks for the tutorial.
Je confirme que ça marche très bien !
Tried it, didnt work for me. May not have the right tape, but even after cleaning thoroughly with alcohol, it wouldnt stick well enough and after a few quick movements began to wrinkle and detach. I also found it too stiff. But if it works for you, its certainly a neat and cheap way :). Im going to 3d print a replacement part and use LM8uu bearings.
Is it just regular old packing tape or is it that fancy Teflon tape?
works like a charm
thanks so much for this
The magic touch is Microscope grease, its a stiff sticky grease. USE IT its Magic...........................
Good find, thanks!
W. O. W!!! Definitely doing this tomorrow! :D
This is really anoying... Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, ill try that!
Is this just regular household Sellotape or something more 'industrial'?
Just the regular stuff from the supermarket.
Hi! I just got mine a couple of days ago, and I'm very interested on this topic. How long last the tape, before needs to be replaced? ¡Thanks for the video and the clever solution!
Played about 200h of DCS since doing it, still works the same way as in the video to this day. The only thing I have to do from time to time is to readjust the tension screw since it gets a bit loose over time, takes just a few seconds so not an issue really.
I just tried. Just took just around 45 minutes and works perfect!!!
@@kwlxxi4813 Good to know!
@@bodifx Hi ! How's it doing now ? Have you had the need to replace the tape and re-lube it ?
@@dan3a It was as good as the day I recorded this video last time I used it, few weeks ago, it is back in the box for the time being now.
Teflon tape might do an even better job. I'll try when mine arrives.
Good idea! Share here once you install what it feels like :)
@@bodifx I just got this throttle. I want a weighty feel to it so I don't like loosening the screw to much. But man does it stick something terrible. I've been looking up solutions and found something called nygel 7a7 (or something like that)
Supposed to make it feel more hydraulic if you know what I mean. And apparently this stuff can be applied to the stick as well. Again giving it a more hydraulic feel. And less center springy.
Wondering if you've heard of this stuff?
@@bobbydellaserra441 Yes, it is the "holy grail" on Hoggit for this issue, I never tried the stuff since importing it in my country would be more expensive than the HOTAS cost me.
@@bodifx ok sorry it would be so expensive for you. The product is not cheap to start with. But I can't put up with the sticky feel on the throttle like this.
Thank you for the quick reply. 🙏
Thanks for the video! I had one of these a few years back and hated the stickiness. I've since lost it in a move. Debating between this and a much more expensive throttle, is this modification still working well for you? Has it required maintenance?
Still working perfectly fine, I only open it to clean the dust and such that get inside, the mod itself is untouched since then.
On the other hand I have some other problems with the other axis, the little wheel goes crazy from time to time, the paddles are basically useless now, I only use them as buttons, the controller style analog stick has some problems in the up/down axis and the joystick rudder axis don't work very well turning to the left.
In general, after >1000h playing all the buttons are still ok and only the main throttle axis and x,y on the joystick are still working well.
@@bodifx Good to know. I've taken a break for a while but when I sim I put a lot of hours in. I was hoping to use that front leaning bar as a rudder pedal (as I believe it is intended to be used), and your not the first person I have heard complain about it. It is likely the biggest advantage after cost over the Virpil I am considering. At a quarter of the cost its very attractive, but I have to replace it due to functions I really need every 500-1500 hours then it may cost me money not to get the higher quality unit. Tough choice.
my problem is the to two pedals for the fingers is sticking to the right
Did you fix that problem?
How did you remove the factory grease?
Rubbing alcohol and an old microfiber cloth.
How well did this hold up over time?
It is still working great last time I used it a few months ago.
Hi, it's now been 5 months or so since this video was released. Is it still smooth or back to sticky? Because that's what seems to happen after some time with man of the grease solutions.
Still good enough after a few dozen more hours of use since my answer bellow, I will eventually open it to clean all the dust that accumulated over time and report back if there is any significant difference.

you do know if you push the throttle full forward and turn the unit upside down @ the top center is a "set" screw that you can either tighten or back off to change the "stiffness" right ?
The screw does nothing to fix the initial stickiness to get it moving which is problem people are having. That is caused by the plastic plate rubbing against the metal, not the tension screw.
