  • Everybody has a sense of color and no matter whether we’re outside or from a reference, we’re not copying literally. We’re interpreting what we see with color.

Love the photos you use to illustrate your points. It is so helpful to see the photo and to hear and see what and how you would change to enhance any painting. Thank you for sharing your expertise..

This was so helpful to me. I take things way too literally a lot of the time, and struggle with wanting to (or feeling like I "should") copy the photograph. Then when I paint what's in the photo, I'm not happy with the results. This perfectly explains to me why I'm not happy, and what I can do about it. Thank you!

This is excellent Phil! You have an uncanny ability to decipher what a photograph presents to make a painting out of it. When you explain it I understand how to read it from looking at the photo. But this takes some time to develop this ability to see as an artist. I am getting better just by watching your videos many times over I may add lol, but when my wife and I go out for walks I am constantly looking at things I see from an artist perspective. I think once you develop this ability, it is hard to not see it that way. Which is a good thing. Love these videos Phil.

This video is right on time for me. I've been sitting here looking at a painting I'm working on trying to figure out how to fix the colour on the background. Now I see it. Thank you so much 😊

Hi! I recently discovered your channel and have been learning a lot of good tips from your videos - thank you! I also love how you use PS to show us what you mean, making minor adjustments to value, hue, etc. from ref photos so that we can see how to improve the composition or overall feel before we start painting (or in the middle of a painting). Do you have a tutorial on how we can use PS to do the same for our ref photos or works in progress? Like what basic tools you use to tweak composition, do initial color studies, etc? Apart from the crop tool, I'm a little intimidated by PS (so many tools, do I need a tablet/pen for more precise selections, and other considerations.)

Hi Mari I use a wacom tablet and a stylus (digital pencil). The last set I bought was about $60. I don't know a lot about photoshop. I think I watched a youtube tutorial that gave me the basic knowledge of what I do. There are a lot of free tutorials on youtube. If you have an ipad you can download an app called procreate, which is similar to photoshop and just a one time cost of $12-15 and uses an apple pencil. What i do just scratches the surface of what you can do on photoshop, and shouldn't take that long to pick up. Let me know if you have any questions
