  • At first I thought that these were harmless Leopard sharks. They were not. So what sort of sharks were they? :) Harmless Gray Smoothhound sharks. Happy Shark Week!

That's a strange crackling sound, would that be coming from the kelp?

Are smoothound common in LB? I saw one close to shore at mountain road beach swimming in the sand bar. The size kinda shocked me.

No they're not common. First time I've seen them in years of diving off and on. Leopard sharks on the other hand are all over.

Sweet! I've watched tons of video on SoCal diving and think I've only seen one smoothhound in any of them. I would have challenged in favor of Tope, but the rear dorsal looks too large. Please post more if you get 'em.

Will do, though I haven't seen them since. I'll keep looking :)

Cool sharks. How far out is that? I didn't realize there were kelp patties off Brooks.

It was lucky, since most times there isn't much more than calico bass. The kelp was about 1/4 mile out.
