Thanks for posting this game. I am 70 years old and grew up watching a lot of these guys. I am a huge White Sox fan and what a thrill to see Sox great Luke Appling hit that homerun.
MrSoxfan56, thanks for your comment....for it means a great deal to me and provides me with continued inspiration to continue my quest of posting all 2300 hours of vintage sports, comedy and music on my webpage at www.imasportsphile.com....where I have posted hundreds of "nuggets of gold" from our treasure chest of video memories....so, bookmark our page cuz you will want to watch dang near every one of the 1500 videos that are currently posted....cuz you don't want to try to stay up with us on utube...cuz we have 20 channels currently.....with probably over 100 channels on the tube by the time we finish.
I never was privileged to see these guys play in their prime. This is my next best thing. I was there to see Robin Yount and Paul Molitor. Reggie Jackson and Craig Nettles. Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammel. George Brett, Jim Rice, Fred Lynn, Nolan Ryan, Rollie Fingers, and some otherm awesome hitters and pitchers. I attended a game in 1977 at Milwaukee County Stadium. I was HOOKED. I signed up for Little League and in 1978 I saw 40+ games. Mike Caldwell gave me his game cap on the Last day of the year. Yep I LOVE Baseball. Always have and always will.
Ok...wait...in the top of the 1st we see Hank Aaron rip a liner to left, Al Kaline make the throw of a man half his age, and Brooks Robinson turn a 5-3 double play. Amazing!
Thank for having this game wow such a joy too see these GREAT PLAYERS in this game . Never saw them in thier prime but Wow Luke at 75 to hit a Home Run GOD BLESS HIM !!!!!!
It’s pretty shitty how the MLB didn’t get involved or give it their blessings. Supposedly a PR guy told the commissioner that “it’s not a good event to get attached to.” This is why they made their own uniforms and didn’t have any team logos/jerseys. Either way it’s really cool seeing so many baseball icon’s playing again. Even if I’m a couple 2-3 year’s late watching this game.
It is so awesome that you were at this game.....for this video is an absolute "nugget of gold" in our treasure chest of vintage memories at www.imasportsphile.com ....as this game is a snapshot of baseball history during the golden era of sports from 1950 to 1995....but man, just to have seen all that baseball talent and history live in one game....you are truly a fortunate fan.
I was there as well with my mom and when Luke Appling hit that HR, she yells out, that man is 75 years old. About half of the adults around us had no idea.
Great to see the full video of the classic Luke Appling home run which was so joyously covered by TWIB. You can see it at 15:24. One of the things you don't see (or hear) on the short clips is that Red Barber foreshadows this unlikely event at 5:40
Just a word to the wise, the constant comments about the link are a real turnoff to people who just want to comment about the video. We get it, you have a lot of videos at that link. By doing what you are doing you are killing any interest in going to that link and your channel. Once at the top of the page is enough.
Throughout the history of mankind....there has never been a time that there weren't equal parts of "lovers and haters"....for we appreciate that if you aren't a hater...cuz you wouldn't take the time for constructive criticism if you were. We at Ima Sportsphile are not above learning... for our entire life in this project is about moving forward in a continual learning curve. We have a goal of posting 2300 hours of vintage video about a generation that is being too soon forgotten....and it will take us about 7 years just to post our entire content of stories and videos about the athletes, sportscasters, entertainers, musicians, artists and comedians of the Baby Boomer Generation.....with hopes that our site will become a reference library for the "boomers" those generations that have interest in finding out about who this generation was.. When the entire content is posted, we will have just as many folks, if not many more, who came to our site because of our over-abundance of visibility.....and for other reasons other than to comment on some youtube video....as we will have those who are turned off by our "suggested overkill"....for it is our belief that the videos and the memories they generate or re-create are the most important part of the whole equation....and not the comments generated. As a chiweenie Sportsphile who is not afraid to listen and learn....I intend to take your constructive criticism into account....and begin posting comments solely at the top of a page.

This game was played in DC for a couple of years, but the stadium was set up in football configuration. The left field section is on tracks and they move usually move to the third base line for baseball. But they rusted over. It took a lot of effort when the Expos became the Nationals to finally get them to move. When they had soccer they took out once section behind the goal. After a few years, the game moved to Pilot Field in Buffalo. There were old timers games, Equitable Life sponsored one.
They actually played them at RFK in DC for five years, from '82 through '86, I attended every one, this one was the first. Those lower level stands that were rusted in-place were actually made functional again starting in the Spring 1991 for DC developer Chip Akridge's unsuccessful effort to get one of the expansion teams that were awarded to Denver and Miami to start play in '93. I was involved in that expansion effort and I was lucky enough to be allowed out on the field all alone on a Saturday morning once they finished getting it back into it's baseball setup. They had to track-down some retired stadium employees to show the younger employees how everything worked.
That first one in Buffalo was in '87. In the 5th, and last, annual game at RFK in '86, I caught a couple of BP homeruns, I wish I knew which famous old guys hit them, but it was tough to tell from out there without binoculars. That was the year Johnny Bench played, and it wasn't really fair, he was still only 38, and easily homered off one of those old pitchers that night.
Luke Enno, we at ImaSportsphile have come to the conclusion after receiving so many comments from you on so many vintage videos we have posted....that you just might be a Sportsphile too....albeit, we don't always agree with your opinions...we still love to hear them.

Luke Enno, thanks for this comment....for we at www.imasportsphile.com would like to visit with you about our entire 12,000 vintage videos that we are posting on our site.....plus about our plans once our library is totally posted on our site....and about the videos that you have still on VCR.....so, if possible can you go to our site and leave a comment there.....which will provide us with your email so we can contact you?

This kind of game will never be played again….with this kind of historical talent. Ty for posting this!

It's insane that they let them play on a rain-soaked field. No way that would happen today. BUT I'm glad they did, these are amazing legends.
