This was very touching and heart warming. I got to watch Roger and Mickey play when I was a boy. He really got a raw deal from the fans and the press. I'm glad that time heals all wounds and he decided to come back to Yankee Stadium in the last few years of his life. He was a good man.
My first major league game was in 1961 at Yankee stadium. I was 6 years old and still have vivid memories of how green the grass was. Roger hit a home run that day, but who knew then he would go on to hit 61. I batted left handed and threw right handed, so I was always Roger Maris in pick up games. Outstanding ball player and from everything I read outstanding human being as well. We need more like him.
Oh, that great summer of 1961. We stayed up late to catch the "sports" segment on the local news, and we watched in awe as Jim Gentile, Micky Mantle, and Roger Maris climbed that mountain. Gentile was injured and dropped out, but the M&M Boys played on and made it a summer that a youngster could never forget. What great times they were. My sincere thanks to these boyhood heroes. Godspeed to them both, and my thanks to the Maris Family for sharing such a special individual with a nation so devoted to his memory..
Gentile ended up with 141 RBIs, though! Turns out he had as many as Maris (it was discovered years later that one of Roger's runs batted in was a mistake).
One of the worst times in my 71 years was the day I read the New York Daily News with the headline on the back page - Page 1 for Sports - “TRADED TO ANGELS”. Not “The Angels”, just “ANGELS”. The M&M Boys were my idols and heroes and always will be. RIP, No. 9; Maris and Mantle are together once again.
Roger worked for Armour meats in the off season here in KC when he was with the A's touting their products, he spent a weekend at Milgrams at 63rd & Prospect. I was a baseball kid in 3&2 at the time, maybe 10 or twelve. I was there the whole weekend haunting him, I'm sure I was a pain in the ass, Roger took it in stride and was super nice. Gave me a signed book about the Philadelphia/Kansas City A's, was affable and fun the whole time. I've been a fan ever since. Great man genuine and kind, things that really matter.

Couldn't agree more. Roger didn't cheat. The only thing people had accused him was attempting to go after the record in 1961, but in the end, records are meant to be broken. Even if all of The Babe's records get broken, to baseball, he is still like a God for his contributions to the game just like Roger.
It's atrocious the way he was treated, especially in 61'. It's heartbreaking what he had to go through, all the stress and everything, he received so much hate at the time. I'm glad George was able to work it out and bring him back to the stadium, it allowed Roger to see how revered he had become. Damn, I miss them both.
I saw Roger and Mickey play at Tiger Stadium on Sep 11, 1962. The Yanks won 8-7 on a 10th inning tape measure blast by Yogi Berra, over the centre field wall 440 ft away. It was my first ballgame at age 11. The memory of a lifetime.

I was delivering the Washing Post newspaper that summer. Every morning I would quickly pull the center paper out as I was taught. With great anticipation I'd flip to the sports section and answering my prayers the bold headline would read Maris hits another 58, 59 etc. My heart pounded. I was so innocent then....a picture perfect artful swing...etc etc....

Roger Maris was one of baseball's greatest players but he is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame although he is still eligible. One of these days I will make sure Roger Maris will get his plaque to go along with the plaques of Shoeless Joe Jackson and Pete Rose in Cooperstown.
He should have made it there many years ago for not only his "HONEST" record of 61 home runs in 1961, but for his two MVP;s in a row, and three World Series Victories. He was also one of the greatest fielders the Yankees ever had, with perhaps the best arm in both leagues at the time. Tony Kukec was so right in this statement about his arm in Yankeeography (Roger Maris).
Look Bill Mazeroski was borderline great (and his WS HR no doubt the push he needed) too but there was alot of grumbling when he got in. So put Maris in he deserves it and damn the grumblers! I think many of those old grumblers are dead anyway.
