The crazy thing is Clemens is also the only pitcher I can think of when a pitcher threw a bat back at a batter a decade later against piazza 😂 Absolutely hilarious when you think about it
The best was Doc Ellis when he said he was going to hit every player on the Reds. He hit Pete Rose, and Pete just laughed, picked the ball up, and underhanded it back to him.

Hey, Matt! I remember you. You guys made a great run in 1987. I was hoping for a repeat of what happened in 1984. You guys almost made it. Then the Tigers lost in the World Series in 2006 and 2012 and then fell just short of going to the World Series in 2013. Former Tiger manager Jim Leyland got inducted in the Baseball Hall Fame and had his number retired by the Tigers just recently. I hope that the Tigers come great once again.

I was 13 watching this game. Nokes taking that shot from Clemens was unbelievable. Never seen it since. They need to show that clip when promoting the rivalry instead of Pedro throwing Zimmer down all the time.

Wow! I've never seen this. Incredible that your armpit caught a 95mph Clemens fastball, damn! Clemens is such an easy player to despise. He'd later go on to nearly kill Piazza with a fastball to the skull a few years after this.

I remember Nokes! He was a tuff player. Too bad he was on those bad Yankees teams late '80s - early '90s. Dark days of bad Yankees baseball. The last time they had losing seasons. They were horrible bottom feeders back then.

Wow! This game is a blast from the past.. Matt Nokes, Kevin Maas, they were called the Baby Bombers as my memory serves me. There were three others, I believe Oscar Ozacar but can't remember the other two.. Stump Merrill as the Yanks Skipper. I'm certainly sure it was the baseball season of 1990..
@@CoolHand971 No worries! They were all young exciting players at the time for the Yankees back then. All of them ended up playing on different teams years later. But, they were the lone bright spots for bad Yankees teams back then. Late '80s - early '90s. 4 straight losing seasons. Dark days for NYY. Too many older washed up vets, injuries, and constant manager changes. Of course the rest was history after the rebuild. lol. Multiple WS titles later on.

One of the 5 baby bombers, Kevin Maas, most of his 21 dingers were monstrous shots, I was hoping he would had a bright future with the Yanks, but unfortunately it didn't turn out that way, he didn't have a chance to play for them again the following season...
@@CoolHand971 I remember all of that! As for Maas, he hung around a few more seasons. If I recall, had the same issue as Oscar Azocar. Struck out a lot, swung for the fences too often. Oscar ended up getting traded to San Diego and played with the Padres for a lil bit. Maas ended up with the Twins and then on to Japan.

I guess a ball fired back at you with your glove on is better than having a jagged-edged broken barrel of a bat flung in your direction (2000 WS Game 2, broken bat thrown at Mike Piazza by Clemens).

Joe Morgan never said anything right. Every time something happened, Joe Morgan made it seem like there was a rule for it. He was horrible at commentating. The worst.
I loved Clemens when he played for the Yankees but I don’t blame Matt Nokes he probably was in pain after that pitch. He’s a better man for throwing the ball back to him rather than throwing the bat at him.

I like it. Pitchers typically don’t catch much consequence for drilling people and they all have thrown at batters. Nokes just showed him up a little. Clemens surely was embarrassed as he couldn’t quickly call it even and move on.
personally, I don't think Nokes was showing him up! I think Nokes was angry and instinctive. you notice how he 'eyed' Roger. I AM quite sure he did not know what to expect from Clemons. when I played, if I got hit, I'd put on a show! I'd holler, "I'M HURT! I'M HURT!!" coaches would come out. I'd holler, "I'll STAY IN THE GAME, BUT I'M HURT!!!" after the next pitch, I'd be standing on 2nd base.

Youre a good guy, I understand why you would not "cross the line" and swing a bat at Clemens head. But if there was ever a man who deserved it, that was him. I think if it’s an obviously intentional HBP then the batter should get a free swing at the pitcher. Something tells me if this were implemented then all the sudden there would be AMAZING ball control happening out of nowhere

I was 13 watching this game. Nokes taking that shot from Clemens was unbelievable. Never seen it since. They need to show that clip when promoting the rivalry instead of Pedro throwing Zimmer down all the time.

Wow! I've never seen this. Incredible that your armpit caught a 95mph Clemens fastball, damn! Clemens is such an easy player to despise. He'd later go on to nearly kill Piazza with a fastball to the skull a few years after this.

Wow! This game is a blast from the past.. Matt Nokes, Kevin Maas, they were called the Baby Bombers as my memory serves me. There were three others, I believe Oscar Ozacar but can't remember the other two.. Stump Merrill as the Yanks Skipper. I'm certainly sure it was the baseball season of 1990..

But, they were the lone bright spots for bad Yankees teams back then. Late '80s - early '90s. 4 straight losing seasons. Dark days for NYY. Too many older washed up vets, injuries, and constant manager changes. Of course the rest was history after the rebuild. lol. Multiple WS titles later on.

As for Maas, he hung around a few more seasons. If I recall, had the same issue as Oscar Azocar. Struck out a lot, swung for the fences too often. Oscar ended up getting traded to San Diego and played with the Padres for a lil bit. Maas ended up with the Twins and then on to Japan.

I hate the DH rule. Pitchers who had to hit for themselves at least had to face the music 2-3 times each game. Cowards
yeah, and it would speed up the games! this is what mlb baseball is all about! mlb used to be about the fans. NOW baseball is all about tv and getting the games over with!!! and having the pitchers bat would shorten the game. most can't hit.

I like it. Pitchers typically don’t catch much consequence for drilling people and they all have thrown at batters. Nokes just showed him up a little. Clemens surely was embarrassed as he couldn’t quickly call it even and move on.
personally, I don't think Nokes was showing him up! I think Nokes was angry and instinctive. you notice how he 'eyed' Roger. I AM quite sure he did not know what to expect from Clemons. when I played, if I got hit, I'd put on a show! I'd holler, "I'M HURT! I'M HURT!!" coaches would come out. I'd holler, "I'll STAY IN THE GAME, BUT I'M HURT!!!" after the next pitch, I'd be standing on 2nd base.

I think if it’s an obviously intentional HBP then the batter should get a free swing at the pitcher. Something tells me if this were implemented then all the sudden there would be AMAZING ball control happening out of nowhere
