RW, I fully agree with you, the 25-06 and 257 Weatherby are the only viable 25's. So everybody needs to ship me their 250 Savage and 257 Robert's ammo immediately. Actually I would like to see a 25, just so 25 bullets would become more available.
I personally think a 35 Prc on the bigger case would be a sweet rig. Unfortunately America seems to favor the 35 and 32 caliber about as well as the proverbial redheaded step child. The 33 bracket is already crowed for what it is. So how about a 23, 29, 31, 36 PRCs. Hornady could invent the calibers and bullets. Then just publish whatever ballistics they want. Who cares if the published ballistics match reality? Hornady doesn't.
    Cheers, Jeff

That's the exact reason the PRC is an improvement over legacy cartridges. You'll have to basically do custom rifle to get where you want to go with that route, whereas with a PRC cartridge you're set up to shoot modern bullets per saami spec. No need for custom twist rates or custom throats, none of that.

It's hard to say what the next PRC cartridge would actually be, but I personally would want a 338 PRC - the 300 PRC case necked up. But as you pointed out, it wouldn't push the heaviest high bc bullets super fast, and it also wouldn't compare favorably to the Lapua and Norma, however it would have less recoil than those two and brass would be much more affordable. It would be an awesome cartridge for hunting and it wouldn't be far behind the 340 WBY - it would probably push 250 grain bullets 2800 to 2850 fps or so in a 26" bbl. It would also be compatible with a lot more rifle actions than the Lapua or Norma. But I'm not holding my breath waiting for them to make it.

The Remington 700 long action has the same mag box length regardless of case head diameter ie: 06, standard length mag, and H&H mag. They can see that the 6.5 PRC was treated as a long action because of that ridiculous COL and lower the capacity on the 25 enough to get that COL to be an actually short action cartridge. You don’t get to market shit as a short action when basically only custom rifles will be chambered that way and I feel like they really walked that back over the years. A straight neck down would make for a longer COL and make an even more overbore cartridge. I don’t think the 338 gets made: they don’t any angle of attack over the Lapua or Norma. It’s too niche to be applicable to hunters, who drive the bulk of the PRC sales. Very few people want to deal with that level of recoil for a hunting gun.

Hornady can never kill 6.8 western. That cartridge was designed so darn well, and unless hornady copies it exactly, the short action following would never trade 6.8 western for some weird long-action/medium action hybrid cartridge. Say what you want about how the 6.8 western is “already dead,” but it’s not. It is growing. That’s why some good brass companies are producing it this year (finally!).

Here's the thing, how many of these PRC cartridges are actually "better" than some of the stuff that's been around for more than 60 years? How about rifle manufacturers just release older cartridges with faster twist rates to accept longer bullets? That'll save them a ton of money on tooling and design. No need to re-invent the wheel. Take the 25-06 for example. Build it in a 1:7.5 twist barrel and you have an ELR shooter. Take a .270 and give it a 1:8 twist and it'll stabilize 175gr bullets.

The cartridge concept that piques my interest is a 6.8W necked up to 0.284”
This would effectively be a short action 280AI.
Why?… the 280AI is a common choice for back country mountain elk hunters in ultra light rifles.
A short action is beneficial in this regard.
The 7SAUM and the 7WSM are dead so there is presently a gap in the short action cartridge space that is well suited for Elk and Moose with moderate recoil and high BC bullets.
The benefit of a 7 Western over a 6.8 Western would be comprised of all of the reasons why people choose the 280AI to begin with plus better barrel life and more robust selection of bullets.

I would say the 25 PRC is the most likely, but I also don't see them making one. I think wider spread adoption of the 25 Creedmoor is more likely. Making a 25 PRC goes a little against Hornady's whole cartridge design ethos. They are always interested in well balanced cartridge's and modest to somewhat high velocities. They are not in the business of the fastest or the most powerful but balance. I could see 25 Creedmoor being their next big push as I do believe the 25 is having a bit of a comeback and is an excellent choice. A 25 PRC would be likely be too fast for them given their philosophy with ELD-x. A short range hit with a 130gr 25 cal ELD-x out of a 25 PRC would probably just grenade it. They currently dont have a good 25 cal option for their CX bullets. For hornady a 120gr CX in 25 cal would work well in a 25 PRC. Both of the bullets theorized here dont exist yet though. 25 PRC also has no match applications or varmint applications. It would probably just be too niche.
From what I see the 7-6.5 PRC is the best wildcat of the current PRC lineup. This has gained a lot of ground in competition and hunting circles because it is very well balanced and efficient. It fills a different niche than the 7mm PRC and the 6.5 PRC, but it could really harm 6.5 PRC sales and 7mm PRC sales. Given how things have been going for Hornady I think they arent going to mess with the PRC lineup anytime soon. It is very well balanced at the moment.

I'd much prefer a .338 PRC. I see all the shortcomings and the limited market. But it would close the gap in Hornady's line up between the 300 PRC and the 375 Ruger.
Why shoot a 338 Win Mag if you can shoot a 300 Win Mag? The .338 Win Mag has still been a very popular cartridge up in Alaska, so why should the 338 PRC not take over that spot?
It is also more affordable and easier to produce .338 rifles with a .532 bolt diameter compared to the 338 Lapua and the 338 Norma. The PRC wouldn't be the ultimate .338 out there but again a pretty decent "affordable" option for non-handloading shooters and off the shelf rifle users. That's what made the other PRCs so popular so why not a .338?

That Berger bullet is not .65 G1 BC, it is .334 G7 BC. It is a g7 projectile and it is just nonsense that it is even given a g1. It's marketing gimmicks. Is it a big deal? No. It's simply given an equivalence value on a scale that it doesn't belong to. Point is simply call it what it is. There is a difference and there is a reason that that difference exists.

There are cartridges out there already that cover those cartridges. The Winchester Short Magnums did not all do well. And that is because of the overkill. If one swamps the market with maybe cartridges they fail in sales and they end up toast. Dream on but I can't see it.
