I was in band and honors band in school playing the tuba and I never once memorized the names of the notes. I knew where the notes were on the scale, what knobs to push and how to blow. Yes their are some basic rules you have to follow but when it comes to learning to play music, do it the way you memorize best. I wanted to play the drums but there was already too many drummers so the tuba is what I got. One thing I learned is if you can play an instrument (any instrument) you can play the drums. The drums are by far the easiest, and most fun, instrument to play.
Learning the note names can certainly help you later on as it basically allows you to know how to finger any note without looking it up among other things
I wouldn't say drums are the easiest, it's alot more than hitting a thing with a stick. some percussion instruments are quite comical though like the triangle and finger symbols but as a percussionist you will play many instruments from mallets to snare drums
Not everyone is going to have a larger tuba in the background as these instruments are expensive. So it would be best that she show you how to work with any tuba that you have. It's not like picking a size to match the player.
I found my spirit animal. I'm a trumpet player, and I'm watching a video about Tubas. And no, I don't have a massive ego. My self esteem has been destroyed during middle school.
I like playing the instruments nobody plays in my band too. I play bass clarinet and French horn I’m the only one in my grade who plays horn and I’m the only one in my school who plays bass clarinet. I love them both so much my lips are a bit swollen form playing my bass clarinet so much lol. So now I can’t play until my lips heal.
It can be harmful to your playing, a lot of factors go in to whether or not it is exactly harmful to your playing. It depends where the puffing is happening, if it is in the low register it may not matter, but unless circular breathing, puffy cheeks in the upper register could be harmful to your embouchure by putting unnecessary stress on it.
www.musica-orichalcinus.eu/compendium%20for%20eeb%20bass%20and%20brass%20band.pdf. If puffing cheeks fully then there is loss of control, however, slight puffing of cheeks is sometimes necessary. It is not black and white to say it's wrong.
I am blind, and I never really got a chance to actually touch the tube or really check out how it works, can you try to explain it to me in more detail, and possibly show me the lowest note on the tuba and how you get that note?
I suggest not tightening your corners too much it makes it so the low notes don’t come out you kinda just have to mess with your embouchure and see what works best it’s kinda of just a trial and error thing
anyone heard of Allison Jensen? made a vid about the first five notes for trumpet, tuba etc..? I'd like to get more of her vids. Contact her, find her home page or whatever...
I just started playing tuba. I have been playing trumpet for 4 years. I wanted to watch some tuba videos and found this one. I was hoping that I can learn some more advanced things like how to read bass clef notes or other mechanics and techniques. But no, she took half of the video explaining how to open your tuba case and pick up your tuba. The video is titled “How To Play Tuba”. She didn’t even show how to play a B flat. This video is not about playing the tuba, but about things that everyone ignores and nobody cares about. Terrible video.

The tuba she's playing looks really small, almost like a euphonium.
Try looking at the background
its a 3/4 size tuba
I think she’s probably just tall
MemelordAlaka'i - no he is right it is a smaller tuba it is a 3/4 size yamaha tuba.
looks like a Eb bass, it's slightly smaller then a 3/4.
also she is tall, just look at that piano

If the small tuba didn’t meet your face, wouldn’t it have been a better choice to use the larger tuba in the background?

She’s probably seen many tubas injured or killed by injudicious handling.

Very informative, brings me back to the trumpet days
when i first started learning tuba there was such little content of women tuba players. Glad to see how much more there are today
I’ve been playing tuba for 40 years. I got started when I realized that girls were interested in heavy-metal musicians!
I’d like to argue with the fact that that tuba is the biggest instrument. have you seen the octocontrabass clarinet? I don’t think you have
Octocontrobass tuba?
or like... a stand-up bass?
What about the double contrabass flute? Crazy contraption!

This video motivated me to learn tuba. Thank you.
I want to learn. How totally cool. It is an enormous instrument. How fun. A very helpful video.
