  • Today, we're trying something a little different here on Comic Island. We've dug through our archives and found our very first video from June 1938 - a whopping 85 years ago! Bob Mary discusses the first adventures of Superman in Action Comics #1, the story of Zatara, future father of superhero Zatanna (also Action Comics #1), the story of private detective Bob Nelson from Detective Comics #14-16, the story of Nadir's escapades during this time in the Adventure Comics books, and finally the rise of Doctor Occult in the book More Fun.
On this Day in Comic Book History is an attempt to take a joking look at comic book history and the developments in the world around them. With Hitler on the rise, Snow White a brand new movie in theatres, and war breaking out around the world, 1938 was a very different and interesting time around which Superman first premiered. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster had a lot to contribute to comic book history, but we also wanted to look at the works of other creators like Fred Guardineer, too. Arden plays "Bob Mary."

What you didn't know that Superman was originally Solarman of Super Comic's out of South Africa. Jerry Siegel purchased the rights to Solarman when he took a trip to Africa and came upon Newspapers that published many varieties of Comic's and the most famous was a Black character by the name Kal 'El which means Light of God or Angel of God's in Africa. His father Jor 'El means Descent of God, mother Lara means Protection. These aren't made up name's they derive from Hebrew [Egyptian origin]. Kal 'El[Solarman] was depicted as a black man who received his power's from a diamond[Eye of Ra] that collected energy from the sun. Hints: The American caucasian version of Superman originally had just a big S on his clothing and later add a diamond with the S in the middle. Solarman wore a yellow[Gold] shirt with a big S on it and black pants. He could run faster then a cheetah or Local motive. Jump high, had the vision of Ra[x ray vision]. Could deflect bullets or out maneuver them. He could blow enemies away with his mighty breath. But he couldn't fly. So when Jerry brought the character to the states he teamed up with drawer and painter Joe Shuster to change the character to what you see today. South Africans became enraged when this comic strip of Superman was showing up in South Africa with the same similarities between the two characters of Solarman and Superman which Americans caught whiff of this was going to band Superman all together until They changed up the uniform, similar to patriot colors and gave him ability to fly and I secret identity Clark Kent. In Superman 3 it was almost a slap in the face to Super Comic's in South Africa when he flew a goofy black man to a coal yard and crushes coal turning it into a diamond.
