Hi Phil, thanks for re-subscribing 😬. Crazy YT - why would that happen? Anyway. Thanks for stating you loved the video, it's great to get that kind of feedback. I am trying to get better at this youtube game 😆. Cheers Phil 👍
Just subscribed and enjoying your content. Had my 400x just 2 weeks and a return to biking after 25 years off bikes. Loving it so far with 225 miles on the clock. I've added the left hand side only of a pannier rack (Aviator off ebay) and using a Classic Rides pannier bag to complete the look. Bullet indicators and a tail tidy next. Look forward to your upgrades.
Thanks for the sub Ged. Much appreciated. And congratulations for see the light again after 25 years 😆. From my near one week of ownership, I think you have made a good choice of your returning to biking 👍. I will be using my Lomo throw overs on the 400x. I have now got a screen for the bike which I hopefully fit today (£75), keep the wind off me hopefully. I have ordered of Ali Express a rack (£81) for the back which I think is large enough to take a Givi universal Monokey top box plate (£42). That will allow me to use my top box from the T120 on the 400x. I don't want a collection of top boxes 😆. Fitting of the mentioned will be on vids very soon 👍
Just got the 15 tooth through the post Alien. Get the missus to fit it whilst I watch TV 😆. Warranty, not sure on that one. I understand a 16 tooth can mess around with the ECU and throw an error and the speed is take from the rear ABS disk (I may be wrong on this) and the RPM is obviously taken from the engine. The combination of both data items can confuse the ECU as in effect, the engine is running slower than it should at a certain speed taking into account the gear being used at the time. I might just try a 16 at some point in the future to see if the ECU gets confused. Would make interesting footage 😆
@@bankruptpensioner hi there richard i watched ridge roamer on you tube fit a 15 tooth sprocket it seemed to work rather well and he took it on the motorway so when triumph get my scrambler sorted i will try that mod out
Good to see you're enjoying the 400X it is a lovely little bike, I might look at the speed 400 as a second bike at some point because I've gone the opposite way to you and just bought a Triumph Thunderbird 1600 for two-up duties but I could do with something lighter as a second bike.
Well done on the 1600, great bike. I had the 1700 version when I lived in Qatar and brought that bike with me when I came back to the UK. Whilst the thunderbird is a big heavy bike, it is absolutely wonderful. But, I do see your point in getting a 400 for daily use - and up to now, it feels a great little bike. Is a 400 a little bike? In the 80's was the CB400N from Honda classed as a little bike? 😆
Nice bike! Congratulations. I wonder if an extra tooth on the front might be too much with it only having a 14 tooth as standard, that’s a big jump up on a 400. I usually find a 1 tooth increase on a 17 tooth on 750cc + is about right for touring but that’s with much more torque and power. Maybe go for -1 or two teeth on the rear instead. That low first is probably for difficult off road or taking the whole family out Asian style. Are the wheel sizes different on the X and road versions or just the fitted tyres?
It seems that Richard has not fully taken account of the fact that this machine purports to be a low-geared scrambler, hence the 14 tooth front, which will help it go very slowly without slipping the clutch, or manage difficult off road, as you say. It's thanks to the 14 tooth front that he can comfortably move off in second. Sadly, my dentist has gone back to Peru, but surely extra teeth on the back would further lower the gearing? No? He should aim for fewer teeth on the back to raise the gearing.
Based on other reviews, I think this could work to my daily riding needs. I now find setting off in 2nd fits my riding style and setting off in this gear is not stretching the clutch. I have heard that moving up to 16 teeth on the front can screw up the ECU calculations as the data regard speed versus engine RPM can cause the ECU to throw a fault message. Anyway - when I hand over the bike to you for a week - I shall be handing you a 15th tooth and you can change it 😆. And then you can give a balanced view of the difference and benefits if any. Couple of weeks and you can have the bike for a week along with the Carpuride 👍
Picking one of these up tomorrow. $9000 NZ here currently. 60yr old return to biking fella. For use as a commuter and for exploring our logging roads. We have great biking roads here in NZ but many many retarded special needs car drivers. Subscribed and liked. Keep it up I’ll be following your modifications and experiences on this interesting machine. 🤙🏼
Hi Chrro, you should now have your 400x. Well done. I think the first thing is the 15 tooth sprocket. Easy job if you have access to a reasonable tool box. I fit my 15 tooth this week and will upload a video on the process. In the interim, on the understanding that 1st gear is so low, you might want to consider setting off in 2nd. Love to know your thoughts on the bike when you have had it a week or two 👍
@@bankruptpensioner thank you Sir,first ride to work coming up this morning so I will get to see how the gearing feels. On another note I am absolutely amazed at the quality of this 40ox very well done. We don’t need salted roads here in N Z but I do live next to the ocean so it will be interesting to see how that may affect the fastenings over time. But so far very impressed.
@@bankruptpensioner I’m intrigued to hear the difference with the 15t cog swap. With my intended 400x use I’m not needing to increase top speed I need the snappiness of a lower gear punch to deal with commuting and forestry road trails. So I think the standard gearing supplies that but I am waiting for your verdict. Thanks
In all honesty , a Honda CRF 300 rally will eat this bike for versatility and off road ability . I have cruised at 65 mph on a motorway on a rally with minimal vibration , only knobby tyre whine spoiling things . The rally weighs 152 kg wet has proper wind and weather protection ….and is proven reliable .
I think you are absolutely right. The CRF is a completely different capability for the road and off road. At best, I suspect the 400X is ok / good for a bit of green lanes - maybe. Maybe a muddy field. But anything more technical than a rough field, the 400X may struggle. It is a road bike that looks the part, but probably could not perform in the way one would think it could. I am no technical off road rider but simple tracks will be fine. Let's be clear, the CRF is in a completely different class. 👍
You started you video off by saying if your interested in this bike this vlogs for you. Now I'm not interested in the bike but i am a fan of your channel so i always watch your vlogs no matter what's the content. £5700 for the Triumph seems high to me especially when the 450 Guerrilla comes in under 5 grand and in my opinion looks a better bike but i realise your a Triumph fan boy and its each to their own.
Hi Ian, it is funny, but after agreeing the price etc for the 400x, a day later the videos on the RE G came flowing through. The RE looks great. That said, it's ok from my perspective. What may happen is once the RE G starts to sell second hand, I might reach out and get one. It's not often that I buy new, the T120 is an exception and a long termer however, I said the same about the Tiger 900, again anothe great bike. If you go for the RE G, i would love to know your thoughts on the bike :)

I believe the 400 speed already has a 15 tooth front sprocket which is more suitable for road use, there is no room to fit anything larger.
