I predicted some brackets of mine CBJ in 7 I knew it was unlikely but knew they still had a chance sadly didn't know Tampa would be that weak minded after the first period
When Tampa officially clinched the Presidents Trophy (I think it was in mid-March), I commented on the NHL's post on FB, literally just joking saying "Watch them get swept by Columbus now". I seriously should've put money on it. I called it, but I was joking when I said it... is it too late to dig up that comment and cash out on it? Probably. That's a dangit.
@@ghost_curse You should've put money on it bro. In my actual serious bracket, I had Tampa winning the cup against my Sharks (because we can never ever have nice things)
something else I realized about this sweep is that Tampa Bay didn't just only lose 2 consecutive games only twice, but throughout the 82 game season, they never lost 4 games across 7 games. Yes, across 82 games, they never lost enough games to lose the equivalent of a playoff series. Then they went and got 0 playoff wins.
As a Bolts fan, there were a few of us that saw a buzz saw facing a buzz saw...and after that Game 1 collapse, we knew we were in trouble. Tampa never got punched in the mouth like that all year and it showed. It took me some time, but man, what a series CBJ played. Never backed down, never gave us a chance to get our legs. Amazing.
"We don’t have any words and we know you don’t want to hear them. We understand your anger, your frustration, your sadness. Everything you’re feeling - we get it. This isn’t the ending we imagined, and certainly not the one we wanted. Thank you for being there the entire way."
I (a Hurricanes fan) remember I kept joking with my friend (a Sabres fan) that watch CBJ sweep Tampa Bay and he kept saying that it would never happen. Guess who got the last laugh on that one.
Watching this after 3 more years of playoff hockey, it's safe to say the Blue Jackets created a monster. 3 straight cup Final appearances for Tampa, 2 Cups. Terrifying
Either way that 2019 season was a embarassment and probably the biggest upset in this century. but yes, looking at the big picture it really doesnt matter anymore.
Ahhh, the cbj-Tampa series from 2019 is the high point of my cbj fan history. It’s still nice to be able to look back and realize we made a little bit of history with that sweep. But then I’m reminded that it just pissed Tampa off and gave them the drive to win two cups in a row, so it all cancels out in the end
God, this was amazing to watch happen. I'm a sucker for the scrappy underdog story and the BJs delivered the goods. After that one period, the Lightning had nothing, and you could see on their faces that they were in complete shock. It was glorious.

Four years later, Bobrovsky would do it again, bringing the Panthers back from down 3-1 in their series to the Boston Bruins (who broke the regular season record set by the 2019 Tampa Bay Lightning) and knocking them out of the playoffs. Florida has also only lost one playoff game since losing three of their first 4 in the 2023 Playoffs thus far en route to their first Stanley Cup Finals since 1996.
Well I knew as soon as they scored the 3-2 that they were done. Didn't think it was gonna be a sweep, but maximum 6 games. They coasted for like 2/3 months and got lazy. You could see their body language after that goal that they were on golf tournament mode already
I suggest the San Jose vs Vegas 2019 1st round series when Vegas gave up a 3-1 series lead by blowing an opportunity on a questionable call in game 5, letting in a soft OT goal in game 6 while on the powerplay, and blowing a 3-0 lead in the 3rd period of game 7 on another call that may have been controversial but doesn't take away from them coughing up the lead.
As a bolts fan, its crazy to go back and watch this. I remember all the emotions I felt, every single one, across all 4 games. I couldnt believe what I was watching, nor could I figure out how it happened. I was in complete denial. Its weird to say but watching this now gives me chills. Not just bc I can appreciate how good CBJ was now that it doesn't bother me, but knowing what comes after. Not to mention this is the first time I ever heard of the Lightning slacking off at the end of the season with that team vacation. Kinda makes me pissed again but itd be worse if we didnt win 2 cups after
As a lifelong Tampa Bay Lightning fan, sitting here as the defending Stanley cup champions with a 3-2 series lead over the Isles, I STILL have PTSD from this series. My mood is instantly ruined when it’s brought up. I watched every minute of every game and I was visibly depressed when Panarin scored the empty net goal in game 4. My college roommates were genuinely concerned and were legit consoling me 😂 hindsight, I know that’s a bit of an overreaction but at the time, it never crossed my mind that they’d lose any games to Columbus, much less get swept themselves. Hats off to the Jackets, though. They absolutely earned that win
Going to be the same this year if we can ever get rolling. The jackets were counted out from day one. Half of the Cleveland monsters were playing for the jackets down the stretch. All healthy, I think they can go deep. Which goalie should they play? The all star pick Korpi or Merzlikins with the .923 save percentage over 33 games and five shut outs in 8 games?
I think the Jackets have a decent shot against the leafs, but if they are able to get into the round of 16, I'm much less confident. Granted, I thought they would get swept by Tampa last season, and in 2017 Nashville made a deep run that nobody expected, so who knows.
The entire 2019 Playoffs was a big Dang-It. How many times in the history of the NHL has it happened that every single Division Champion was knocked out in Round 1?
Teams that finished just outside the playoffs such as the Habs are probably thinking they could have won the Cup had they just won one more game during the season. And the winner was a team who had been awful the first three months, and who had a less than stellar record in the playoffs.
@@joshuantumba1700 well sure I also am a Hawks fan but I did not become a hockey and hawks fan til 17-18 season so I have not seen the team that got me into hockey play in the playoffs and I am now a two year fan of the blue jackets, least I was living since 2001 though
That was excellent but what you left out is the Lightening destroyed the bluejackets in their 3 regular season games, all blowouts which makes this sweep even more remarkable.
That was a pretty good choke, but I wouldn't quite put them on the same level. The 2017 Hawks didn't win the President's Trophy, let alone tie the record for regular season wins. Also, the Preds had made some noise in the playoffs before. The sweep was the Jackets' first series win in franchise history.
You should cover what happened between the #1 and #8 teams in the Western Conference that year as well. The #8 Avs came in hot with a rookie Cale Makar and the #1 Flames, my friggin' Flames, had no answer for them with the exception of game 1
I'm a huge Sharks fan and I think you could do a dang its for every time they have ever been in the playoffs...🙄 What about a hat picks for Messier in 93? Or like Jagr becoming 2nd when the puck bounced off his ass? I don't need more Ovi lol. Love your videos Steve! Tell proDrewcer hi👍
Why are we still talking about us getting swept... it still hurts! We too joked about us getting swept. It’s all fun and games until they ACTUALLY get swept
How about when Vancouver had a 2-0 lead on the wings in 2002. Lids from scoring from the redline in game 3 changed the whole series and wings went on to win the cup. Or maybe in the 1998 finals when esa tikkanen missed a wide open net on the backhand. Not sure what game or what the series was off top of my head but could have kept them from getting swept.
I predict the Jackets to win. A team that loses to a 42 year old zamboni driver doesn’t get to win. I don’t mean to twist the knife but that team shouldn’t be allowed in the same area code as the Cup, let alone win a playoff series leading up to it.
hah, youre funny. The capitals won a series and then lost to a team that finished with just 4 points fewer than them, yeah they got swept, but by a team with 4 fewer points. The lightning won the presidents trophy and then got swept in the first round by a team with 30 less points than them. Let me put it to you like this. The 2010-11 capitals had an 8 game loss streak during that season, 48 wins, 107 points, won their conference by 1 single point, but were also 10 points behind the presidents trophy winner then lost in the 2nd round. The 2018-19 lightning had 128 points, tied the nhl wins record with 62 wins, and had lost at most 2 consecutive games in the regular season. They did that twice one in November, both in regulation, and once in February with a shootout loss and then an overtime loss. Then, in the playoffs, they lost 3 and then 4 consecutive games for the first time. After 62 regular season wins, they finished with ZERO playoff wins. The 2010 capitals at least won their first series in 5 games with a playoff record of 4-5. The lightning after winning the presidents trophy had a playoff record of 0-4. That's without a doubt a worse choke. There's no question. the lightning were 3-0 against the team that swept them during the regular season and got outscored 19-8. The capitals were 3-2 against the team that beat them ( one of those wins was in overtime) and were outscored in the 2nd round of the playoffs 16-10 with one of the losses being in overtime. The caps lost games by 2 goals, 1 goal, 1goal, and 2 goals. Whereas the lightning lost games by 1 goal, 4 goals, 2 goals, and 4 goals. the lightning had a+98 goal differential in the regular season, +1.12 per game, then finished with -11 goal differential in 4 playoff games, -2.75 per game. There is probably no bigger playoff choke in nhl history above this other than the 1942 Stanley cup finals where Toronto came back from being down 3-0 to win the cup. really, not much is even close
I remember Binnington's first games as a Blue, and how he handed Tampa their first shutout (only?) loss of the year. I thought "well this bodes well if on the rare occasion the Blues actually make it to a final, where they'll inevitably have to face Tampa." But Boston was my backup pick for the East, so I was half right.
I've been a Jackets fan for a decade, which never made any sense to anyone, as I'm right into the Habs' market. I love the Canadiens, I have to, but I've been cheering for the Blue Jackets. I guess I was picked at in school, and so I could get behind a team that had no fans (and a sweet colour palette). I've lived the agony. I remember the cruel first round exits, having to face the Pens without home ice when we were 4th in the entire league (!), That crushing lost to the Caps when Ovechkin was on a mission. I kid you not, for the first time in my life, at the end of the third game, when it got 3-0 and felt like it was all but over, I cried. I genuinely cried. Of course, I would've loved for the Jackets to keep going, but this just felt impossible, David (Savard) vs Goliath. It gave me hope for life, I don't know. Isn't it why we watch sports in the first place?
don't remind me....UGH !!! thats what happens when a team full of talent, doesn't play as hard as a team with less....just shows ya when you try hard, you can win !
So proud of my Blue Jackets. Never did I think we would win our first playoff series in franchise history against best team having a historical season and by sweeping them.
For a future episode, I would like to see the back story to the time that, I think it was a Bruin, climbed into the stands and hit a fan with their own shoe.
I was so happy with this. I was on a hockey playoff pool with some buddies and I didn't pick a single lightning player meanwhile buddies all had half a team of lightning players. I won the grand prize amongst our lads
Not to pile on Tampa, but I will keep suggesting this until you do it: Bishop and Hedman colliding in game 5 of the 2015 scf. I think that was the beginning of the end for them in that series.
I’d say this tops the UMBC vs Virginia upset. Tampa had one of the best regular seasons ever. Virginia wasn’t quite at that level. This was also a 7 game series, which really sets in stone who the better team is, unlike a single game.
Lightning fan here and winning the Prisedents Trophy didnt do us any favors,in fact, most if not nearly every team that wins it doesn't win the cup.I get how we could only go down from there.Whats important is what you learn from it and how the team does going forward.Thats team playoff history being built.TBL are a playoff team and after hosting the Covid/2020 Stanley Cup we are still pushing for more.I take the good with the bad with the LIGHTNING,its all just part of hockey,go figure, you hockey gods, lol
As a Lightning fan, this upsets me, but I suppose it's our turn in the barrel this week. At least we've won a Cup since the last Canadian team did, 27 years ago.
As a Red Wings fan, it pains me to say this, but perhaps you could do a video on the time when Chicago came back from being down 3 games to none to beat Detroit in seven games. I forget what year that was.
2013. I’m a wings fan but it was a good series. It was cool to see us beat the Ducks and then take a 3-1 lead against the presidents trophy winners who had swept us in the regular season. At least we made it exciting
You should do Pitts vs sens game 7 double OT lose. It’s not necessarily a blooper, but I certainly said dang it as a sens fan (as well to all the crap that followed that in the past few seasons)
I still remember this. When the Rangers missed the playoffs last year, I immediately decided to root for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the playoffs in the beginning. I thought "They won the President's Trophy! They are going to win the cup!!! They will be dominant! This is going to be awesome!!!" And then I watched, and realized how stupid I was to do it. It was a complete waste of time, and I hated the team ever since (at least for the first time since the Eastern Conference Finals in 2015). After that, I actually predicted that the Lightning were going to drop hard with that loss. I actually believed that the stadium will be empty, and that the Lightning would be dead last in the NHL (basically the Detroit Red Wings this season, or worse). But somehow, someway, they are going to the playoffs (and the Rangers too, which I am so happy!!) Like, whenever I believe the Lightning will go far, they blew it. And whenever I think they will struggle, they thrive. I guess if you want your team to win the cup, assume they will never make it. Assume the worst in order for victory, lol (It was a joke, but you get my point).
Do the Sharks reverse sweep please! Doughty saying he could see in the eyes of the Sharks leaders they were worried after one loss and then the Sharks stripping Thornton of his captaincy and basically confirming what Doughty said about questioning their leadership

The Honey Camper capitals did not win a series
By what metric was it a worse choke?
You know what team would've come back from being down 3-0? The 2010 flyers. You should do that series as a dang it.
or the 2014 kings
this vid doesn’t hurt so bad anymore lmao
Ever since this sweep the Bolts have won 8 straight series and 2 straight Stanley Cups! This was the biggest wake up call in NHL history!
Similar story, still as crazy.
The Vancouver Canucks of 2011/12.
LA Kings in 5, and the aftermath.
Beautiful.
don't remind me....UGH !!! thats what happens when a team full of talent, doesn't play as hard as a team with less....just shows ya when you try hard, you can win !
7:50 Why it's very simple, Steve. Have Josh Anderson score a Shorty. ;)
The real Dang It was how much money I lost betting on them to win
This hurts so much
Not anymore.
So proud of my Blue Jackets. Never did I think we would win our first playoff series in franchise history against best team having a historical season and by sweeping them.
It was worth it ALL now!
⚡2020⚡ Stanley Cup⚡ Champions 🏆
I think every playoff prediction in the first round in 2019 was wrong for most people. Most possible exceptions are Leafs and Blues.
You should do the 2010 Washington Capitals vs Montreal Canadiens series. The upset was almost as the 2019 Tampa Bay Lightning but lost in 7 games.
For a future episode, I would like to see the back story to the time that, I think it was a Bruin, climbed into the stands and hit a fan with their own shoe.
Mike Milbury is now in charge of player safety. Insanity.
oh my god, you are the first North American I heard pronounce Artemi's last name correctly, gigantic kudos from this Russian🙋♀️
can you please do Loui Eriksson's first goal with the Canucks, and I mean the open net goal he scored on the canucks (and of course the contract too)
I was so happy with this.
I think that was the beginning of the end for them in that series.
uhhh... yea we don't like this one. time to pull out the secret weapon.
ZAMBONI DRIVER
I’d say this tops the UMBC vs Virginia upset. Tampa had one of the best regular seasons ever. Virginia wasn’t quite at that level. This was also a 7 game series, which really sets in stone who the better team is, unlike a single game.
yeah its like virginia basketball in another way too...
Steve saying that the blue jackets might make the 2019-2020 playoffs.....then they beat the maple leafs in the 2019-2020 playoffs 😂
Martin Brodeur having the puck go in off of his stick that slipped out of his hand.
Columbus pissed of Tampa Bay so much that Tampa activated hard mode and win the next two cups 😆
I put the CBJ to sweep Tampa for fun and that bracket I had Toronto winning the cup. 😂😂😂😂
What about the dang it when we got our redemption and went on to win the Stanley Cup
Dang-It Suggestion: Kings reverse sweep of Sharks in first round in 2014.
You shut your face.
You should do Pitts vs sens game 7 double OT lose. It’s not necessarily a blooper, but I certainly said dang it as a sens fan (as well to all the crap that followed that in the past few seasons)
What happened with the team plane at end of the season have never heard anything about that??
I never did either and googled it, and can't find anything.
All I have to add is that John Forslund is a gem.
Ah someone to keep twisting the knife...THANKS STEVE MY THERAPIST TOLD ME TO STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS BUT HERE WE ARE
Steve dangle can’t decide if he should scream or not
Tampa Bay has come back and won 2 kups in a row I don't think anyone's even going to remember that plane ride
