Cornbread I miss him a lot and I learned a ton from him when he was older.
Once he said...."let me be young again and I show how to get the cash son." Had some of the best times of my life listening
to him talk about The Rack and the money games he played.
I was very fortunate to have met and talked to all of these gentlemen. I spent 6 or 7 years with George almost every day and many times with Grady, who I searched out every time I wanted to laugh for a few days and make some money while I did it. Eddie Red and Beenie I saw at tournaments and spoke to a few times, but didn't really spend time with them.
George was one of my best friends in life , he was still a great player at 85 years old. Sharp as a tack and at 85, I couldn't keep up with him, and I was 50 and in great shape. He was scheduled to go to Germany to swim in the 1936 Olympics, but he unfortunately broke his neck in a diving board accident and didn't get to go. He was a winner , through and through, so I am sure he would have done exceptionally well. He was also an excellent golfer.
I used to live in Arlington Va and I went to the jack and Jill pool club all the time when I was in high school and early college. Instead of going out with friends, I went to play pool. It was a great place to hang out. I sharpened my game there, they had quality pool tables, good people and was always busy. I was a pretty good player after a couple of years, could run multiple racks of straight pool. I also won my college championship and it was all because of Jack and Jill that enabled me to do that. I used to see Bill Staton occasionally when he came. It was big deal when he came, I used to watch him play whenever I could. He was a nice man, would say hi to me, but he was always busy coming and going. I remember he had a partner too. Those were good times.
Jack and Jill, Guys & Dolls in Silver Hill, the Golden Cue in Bladensburg, Jimmy's Golden Q at 7th & T, Roman Billiards in Silver Spring, Randolph Hills in Rockville...... Back in the day there were some serious action rooms all over the Washington area. Now pretty much all you've got are those little 7 ft. tables that are one of the main reasons all but a tiny handful of American players are no longer able to compete on the international level. Hate to say it, but some of you guys 'n' dolls were just born too late.
I played corn bread at the Q corner in the early 80s he did things one the table that was unbelievable. R.I.P.
I played cornbread a bunch of times in the Martin amvets post 27. We pled for $20.00 a game . He was a good pool player.

What a wonderful bunch of guys I would of loved to play them drank a cold beer and just talk.
I've been play'n since 1957 (4 years old) but that was on a short legged bumper pool table. LOL, got ya! But I learned the shots, banks, combo's and spins (later learned it was called English).
Got my 1st car & went to pool halls. It was just to practice but when I got in the place they were those big 9 ft. tables. Felt like I was learning all my shots all over again. But once I got the hang of it, the younger kids would come by & play. Well, I racked a lot... LOL.
Then life began, had a daughter & all sports took a back seat. 17 years later I played again in the bar leagues, felt like I was a beginner again. But once I acquired a PROPER made stick, ya I became the one to beat. NEVER-EVER did I thought that be true, I thought a stick was a stick was a stick. How wrong I was.
ANYwho... at 67 & still enjoying this past-time game, keeps me OFF the bar stool.
I worked at the Golden Cue in Bowling Green, Ohio in the late '60s. One Saturday evening Cornbread, Ted Elias and Jimmy Rempe showed up. I was supposed to close at 1a.m. but the sidemen for Rempe and Elias paid me to lock up, pull the shades and let them continue playing. At 5:30 a.m. they broke up .... I have no idea who won what but their parting words for each other were not cordial.

Played Golf on the snooker table and was on pool league with him and a little snooker for cheaper bets for practice. and some games of one pocket, great character and would bet on anything. Once he challenged a guy to play one pocket on snooker table and used mop handle and one hahaha

Cornbread lost to John sullivan in port Huron michigan just 50 miles from the rack in Detroit. Snooker he never came back

I've been playing 50 years, these guys were playing 50 years before me. They must have been some wild ones.
Mostly true, but Beanie was still in his prime in the early 70's. I saw him destroy some road players in one pocket at his own room, Jack and Jill in Shirlington.

I met cornbread red at the rack I watched him break a Canadian on the snooker table when he got done I asked him to play he said you don't have enough money to play me boy I sad ok and went played somewhere else then he asked me there I told him what he told me never played him

@@weeniebeanie Wishing you best of luck and much success in your efforts. These were my heroes growing up, and they still are. I'm 72, played pool since I was 10 years old. I owned a billiard service and supply store, was a top flight table mechanic, and played pool when I wasn't working,(which was quite a bit of the time, unfortunately). Thanks for the upload. I miss the old timers and the old days. Even though the game is better now for the younger players, since tournament prize money is better, and with endorsements and sponsorships, etc. It would sure be nice to see pool professionals paid commensurate with some of the other sports. Maybe some day.

You learned the hard way from rough characters before the 70s..
Boy, ain't that the truth. There weren't any videos to watch, and damn few instructions in books, and nobody wanted to give up any secret knowledge that they had garnered, because they had to come by it the hard way. You just had to pay your dues, play the best players you could find, and practice your ass off to get good. But, it was still great!
I shot a lot with Cornbread red but they were always something to win if you got Cornbread Red to play.Also shot with Fast Eddie Parker some to he was tough in a 9 ball game ed would take all your dollars. Rip.Eddy
knew beanie from my time living in myrtle beach--genes pool room--had the best hamburgers ever--had a chance to room with grady at the derby but already had a place--i should have done it for a night or two just to hear all his stories lol---played tonk with red at derby city--i remember that year eddie taylor just came in and red was so excited telling everyone hey eddie taylor is here!! great bunch of legends
