- I bought a British Eagle Infinity mountian bike from Facebook Marketplace for £25 and rode it to destruction. Rather than send it for scrap I decided to give it a second life as a cargo bike.
In this video I explain how I built the bike and what I would do differently if I were to build another. Watch to the end to see a bonus 1993 Specialized Hardrock retro-modern gravel bike build!
Big shout out to Phil Vanderlay whose excellent video inspired my cargo bike. If you want to build one of these, I highly recommend you watch his massively comprehensive video: • How to Build a DIY Car...

Your cargo bike looks very practical and a great way to move stuff round using only your energy. Hope you have a good tour on your refurbished bike.
its reassuring to know phil vandelay's design won't fall apart with less-than-ideal welds! i've been considering it but i've got no welding experience. i've got a free bike with square tubing that would look good with square stock welded on. if its too hard to weld i've got an old bmx that would work too (i was going to use its fork for this build anyway)
I have done plenty of welding in the past, but I absolutely would not call myself a welder. I can usually tell what I've done wrong from the look of a weld 😂
The welds on the part of the frame that I made from all new steel are decent. It's where I've joined to the existing bike frame that it gets a bit embarrassing. That said, it's holding and I've had some mega loads on it. I'd encourage you to practice on some scrap with a similar thickness to your tubing if you've never welded before. There are some great welding video tutorials on RUclips which will teach you the basics. Good luck and have fun!
I've got a 4130 steel bike which I found at the side of the road lined up for the next one ☺️
@@EddHawkes thanks for replying! ive got family who're decent at welding and i may just ask for their help. or maybe ill try brazing! itll let me use aluminum too! i plan on making the bed about half a meter and making use of bent round tubing instead of square miters where i can
Great job on the Cargo bike. Nothing wrong with jumping into it and then realizing that you need to change a few things. The Specialized looks too good to cut up. I agree. It looks great built to a gravel bike. Soda or beer cans make good shim material.
Thanks so much!
I have loads of ideas and changes for a MK2 😉 Once my boat project is finished I'll make another one.
simple is best
