I recently came back from a bucket list trip. My wife, Sam, and I spent a week at Plummers Arctic Lodges at Great Bear Lake. I have so much video to go through, it will take a while to get a full video out showing the whole experience. In the meantime, I had enough arctic grayling action in 1.5 hours of fishing to get a quick little video uploaded and give you a taste of what is to come.
While at Great Bear Lake we did do a fly-out trip, an over night stay at Tree River on the Arctic Ocean. It was a tough day. I only caught a couple fish, we casted lures for about 12 hours, hiked 4 km along the river after a heavy rain storm that made the rugged trails very slippery. We were beaten up from the amazing, yet strenuous activity. Arriving back at the main lodge and having only a few hours of fishing before the end of the day we decided to fish close to base and target grayling. I wanted to get some while in the north, they are such a pretty and fun fish.
It was a good call. We got 24 fish in 1.5 hours of fishing, 6 lake trout and 18 grayling. You'll notice we limited the handling of the fish. I learned last year in Great Slave Lake that these feisty grayling are very hard to hold on to for photo taking. Instead of harming the fish I decided to use my net and an under water gopro to capture release shots while they swam away and in my opinion those videos/pictures are far better then the ones I would have taken while holding the fish, potentially harming them.
I truly love the arctic and I want to visit again. It feels like another world yet feels like home at the same time. That, and it was a great vacation away from the summer heat down south and the horrible July mosquitoes (worst I've ever seen, no exaggeration I feel like a prisoner in my own home, just walking around my yard is painful and I instantly lose my mind within seconds). I wish I could have stayed up there!
Anyway I really hope you enjoyed the action, cheers and tight lines everyone!

Thanks Crystal! I knew I wanted to try this while up there. I realized last summer these fish are almost impossible to hold for a poster photo. So I brought my net and used the gopro to record every release under water.

What an amazing species! Its great that the two of you got to get up there. That lake had almost NO vegetation and was super clear. Those fish had nowhere to hide.

Vegetation is practically non-existent up there. Some weeds in shallow bays near a river but that's about it. When we were out in the lake the water temps were 39-42 degrees on average (in July!). I was just dipping my cup into the lake every time I wanted to hydrate. The water looked more clean than bottled water!

If you ever get a chance to go north I would take it. It is usually a once in a lifetime trip but I may start saving and go back (maybe in ten years lol)

That’s the one fish I have always wanted to land! Beautiful water there!

I've only ever caught them in the northern territories but I have seen others catch them in mountain rivers in the Rockies. Possible to drive to them but it'll be a long drive depending where one lives. They are spectacular!

I can’t get enough of this. Great Bear is right atop my bucket list and I hope I can make it up there before I’m too old to reel those fish in.

This was a bucketlist trip for sure (40th birthday present to myself, saved $$$ for three years to pay for it!). It was worth it!

Nice! did you measure it? I think my PB smallest pike is right about the size of this laker... 6, maybe 7 inches lol

It was wild, it was my 40th birthday present to myself lol, bucket list checked off. I am editing the full Great Bear Lake video right now. Maybe one day travel to far north Manitoba... there are grayling and arctic char in the province. Well, close to the territories anyway.

Started off with a monster catch LOL! What an awesome session and my first time seeing this species and how cool looking are they with that gorgeous top fin flared open. That water was so clear, you could see a couple followers when you were retrieving your line. Great job and hope you guys enjoyed your time there. Cheers!

Yes, the arctic is a special place. Not only are the fish different but the fact that there are very few trees and the sun never sets make it feel extraordinary. The small lake trout was a good laugh, especially since they grow as big here as anywhere. A 62 pound lake trout was caught during my stay at this lodge.

It was so much fun! You expected a hit every cast and could see a dozen fish most of the time you looked in the water. We got 24 fish (6 trout, 18 grayling) in a matter of 1.5 hours! Cheers brother!
