The reason your certuz quarts is turning into blocks is because you damage them every time you mine them. Before you mine them from the meteor, hover over and read, if you find a Flawless one, you should try boxing it up if you have the mod, or packaging tape so you dont damage it. If you mine a Flawless block it will get damaged! It will also get damage with silk touch. So you need something else to move it. (sorry for my bad english, i am from Norway)

When you go in the meteors look for the Flawless Budding Certus Quartz. Those don't degrade and can be picked up with silk touch. The other types degrade down to eventually not producing.
