Oris: Inside the watch with a hole (2022)

The Aquis Depth Gauge is one of our most memorable designs from the last decade. It’s affectionately known as ‘the watch with a hole’. Its standout feature is a depth gauge that functions by letting water into the watch through a hole at 12 o’clock. How? Underwater, pressure compresses air inside a channel milled around the outside edge of the watch’s sapphire crystal, allowing water to enter the void this creates. The watermark this makes as the wearer descends corresponds to a scale around the dial edge, giving an accurate depth reading. It’s a simple but highly inventive solution to an old problem. In this film, the insides of an Aquis Depth Gauge are revealed for the first time. Our watchmakers restored this well-worn model, replacing seals to guarantee future water-resistance (always worth doing after a few years with any diver’s watch if you dive regularly) and giving it a full service to bring it back to its original glory at the same time.
