I built one in 1984 and still have it packed away. I remember the biggest drawback was the battery/power setup. The NiCad batts were extremely finicky, in that they must be discharged completely before they could be charged, else they form a memory and go bad, $30 down the tubes. Discharge usually took 10 minutes, then another 15 to charge it fully. And after ALL that, you only got around 8 minutes of peak power with a drastic power drawdown for another 5 til it died. I see they still use those pesky old batts.
Yeah, I remember the NiCAD's too. I still use the NIMH though, but most often LiPO or Li-Ion. The good thing about NiCADs and NiMH is that they do not have to be storage charged and the risk of fire/explosion is minimalized.
Hi Mikael! Thank you for this video, this RTR kit is really beautiful. it made me happy to be able to see it in detail thanks to you. I'm going to watch the following video right now to hear what you have to say about it. Hope the whole family is well. Take care mon ami.
👍Such a beauty and a fun buggy that handled so well for it's time... A tip! cut a small thin slice of silicone fuel line like super thin and stretch it over the tops of the front shock shaft screw heads and onto the shock shafts. This stops that nasty clanking of the metal to metal sound from the shock shaft heads slamming into the metal part.
Back when things were easy & simple and battery connection was not concealed (lol). Always had a cool look with driver and "spring" held gun. Tamiya made it fun.
Uhh, yeah, seen them around. Maybe I should try them out. I love kits more, but I simply do not have time to build all the cars I want so that's why I love XB's too :-)
Yeah, cool little classic. Ahh, never gonna run good compared to modern standards, so might as well run it like it was run standard back in the days (luckily with newer electronics). Would love to get a Wild One some day. Pretty much a ‘civilian’ upgraded FAV with oil filled shocks and everything. Would be a much better 1980s basher than this heavy girl 🙂
Oh, this is cool! A friend of mine had the FAV back in the late 80'ies, I was so envious, I only had my Striker... It might not be fancy to today's standards, but it's still super cool, retro-vintage-wise!
If I had seen a FAV or a Striker back in the 80s I would have dropped to the floor. Back then I only knew about the Nikko or Taiyo. So cool you had a Striker. Lucky you 🙂
I managed to buy an unbuilt kit last year, I thoroughly enjoyed building it last summer, didn’t turn out quite as well as the expert built, but great fun nonetheless, it’s been through streams, sand and dirt and looks great whilst doing it !
Thanks, Darren! Ha ha, yeah, pogo sticks, but that's part of the 1984 fun. And that is what sets it apart from the Wild One. Would much rather get a Wild One than start spending time/money upgrading this.
Loving the looks of this Tamiya, Mikael! The finish on the body and driver seems excellent. It will be fun to see it hopping around the dirt on those pogos! Glad you finally unboxed it and powered it up. This is gonna make for some super cool slomo action! :)
Yeah, glad to see it out now. But you know what I really wanted to unbox instead of this one :-) But well, I was still going "wow" when I first saw it in person. Tamiya always does that with me no matter what car I think. But maybe this will be turned into a civilian some time. Or just be kept XB-stock and run like it is. Not sure. But looking forward making some videos with it outside. Right now it's minus degress, extremely windy and cold though. I do not mind getting outside, but fiddling with cameras in wind and rain and snow and below zero was never my cup of tea :;-.) Thanks a lot for watching, my mate.
@@NordicRC Oh yeah, Tamiya always does that to me, too - Wow! I think if it were mine, I'd keep it stock and enjoy it for what it is. And as for the filming in the cold and wind, I'd give it a miss and stay in front of the fire with my family - definitely not my cup of tea either! :-)
Ha ha, yeah, that *wow* effect. I was surprised I even got it with this. I expected I would just go *sigh* because it’s not a Wild One. But even the FAV produced a *wow*. And yeah. Will wait for just a few plus-degrees before I venture out for a good filming adventure 🙂
@@NordicRC Yeah, that's most likely.. sometimes it looks like Tamiya throws parts of different cars in a giant bin, and then someone picks some random parts and then they tries to make a new car out of it 😂😂
hi Paul. Well, there's a reason why this one has stayed in the box for over two years now ;-) But ones in front of you for real, I really like it. Maybe I will re-build it as a civilian car some time though. But what I really want is the Wild One :-) The box is for nothing ... nowadays anyway :-) Back then it was for the batteries for the receiver.
Hiya Mikael. Glad that you've finally got this one out of the box. Looks like they do a pretty decent job on the paintwork. There is quite a lot to paint on this one. Good to get a 2.4ghz radio too. I really wish I'd bought the re-release kit when it was out a few years back. I was tempted but I already had my vintage one. That's too brittle to use now so just lives on the shelf. One thing that bothers me with the re-release is that they have the battery wire poking out of the side where you can see it. It's possible to have the connection inside the battery compartment where it can't be seen. You may need to make a bigger hole to get the plug through. Anyway nice dramatic unboxing. Are you getting that music from the RUclips library? I never seem to find anything decent on there. Cheers for now matey 😁
Hiya Pete! Yeah, about time to allow the soldier to breathe a little :-) Yeah, the paint work is okay, pretty standard with not too many details, but it does the job, and whoever did it had a steady hand. So I'm happy. Got a lot of these Tamiya Finespec radios now. I like that the XB models are 100% Tamiya (speaks to my nerdyness) but I really miss dual rate, especially with the steering. Uhh, yeah, in my opinion. Better stay away from the old original ones - if one likes to drive one's cars :-) Thanks for the info about the battery. Yeah, heard that in the old days one needed to either solder or drill to get that battery plug/wire inside. I think they changed it with the WIld One? Well, that's the car I really wanted - and one of the main reasons to not unbox this one sooner. And yeah, I'm so techno- and copyright-frightened that I just use the audio library. But one has to search a lot - and go through a lot of crap - to find something a little not-too-stressful music there. Still, I get comments from people that do not like the music. But I still think the audio library is the easiest, quickest and safest for us hobby people. Cheers for now, Petey, and thanks for tuning in.

This little buggy looks fantastic. 😍
Yeah, it's a cool classic one! Thanks, Tibor!
They might be bouncy, but they are super fun to drive.
Hi Mal. Uhh, yeah, must be with those pogo sticks. Looking forward trying it out.
@@NordicRC I think not too bouncy, for the speed it's great.

Looks really good,
as well as your workshop does 👍
Thank you! I really love your name, whenever I see it :-)
wow! that buggy is so cool! nice video!
Thank you Toni! Yeah, very cool and classic buggy!
I buy the tamiya racing stickers for the controllers. Looks nice. Love xbs👌

I really like this model always loved the look so cool💯
Yeah, cool 1980’s design. Love the Wild One a bit more though 🙂 Thank you for watching and the support, Brent.
no joke I have in my basement I got in 1983 ...lol
Niiiice ☺️👌
Somehow the chassis looks a mix of the grasshopper, sand scorcher and Blackfoot...
Ahh yeah, a crossover of a Grasshopper and Sand Scorcher, yeah. Definitely from the same era as the two, so perhaps even the same designers.

Tamiya FAV is a really cool model, might have to check my LHS and se if he got one.
Hi Mattias. Just saw the prices on eBay. Used ones seem affordable but NIB's looks too insane suddenly. Maybe they have gone out-of-stock recently.
Yes pretty expensive, arround 1795:- SEK at my local hobby shop.
@@mattiasrc Uhhhh! Mine was about 800 DKK on a black friday, so I think I was lucky. If I had 1800 SEK I would spend it on a Wild One kit instead.

RC cars meets "my mechanics" lol

Boing Boing Boing! :D

too bad the headlamps dont really work.
Yeah, but looks very cool and 1980s with the lamp-stickers. We can always switch them to something else.
I don't see the point in pre-built retro models
Why?
