I often felt worthless as a child because my teachers would become visibly frustrated with me. I didn’t know how to explain to them that I wasn’t doing it intentionally and how extremely difficult it was for me too. What made it worst for me was that my family knew I struggled with ADHD and even mocked me for it, but didn’t take the steps to get me diagnosed and treated. I’m 24 now but I still get flashbacks of how neglectful my environment was

One thing I learned from my dad is that you have to make sure to get the person's full and undivided attention before talking to them. And even then our attention might wander! Communication is absolutely key, though; both talking and listening.
@@DocSnipes honestly the idea to reward doing tasks you/they don't want to do with tasks you do want to do. One I wish I'd thought of when my kids were growing up! My husband uses the multiple alarms and reminders. So many things I recognize in your descriptions! Really an excellent ADHD video!

The part about useful "distress tolerance skills" @ around 11:50 really rings true for me. One thing that works best for me when I become overwhelmed (and unhinged) is to go for an intense bike ride (big hills, long distances, etc.). Going for a hike in the woods and/or playing with my dogs for an hour or more also does the trick. Basically, any intense physical activity will do.
Forgiveness and education-we both have ADHD. My partner has known for decades they have it, but isn't medicated. I got dx'd during the pandemic and am medicated. It's been a challenge...sometimes a hourly/daily one even
Noise cancellation headphones 😂. Learning to address irritations with a problem solving, loving attitude. Lots of waste baskets. Taking trips without him sometimes. Putting a time limit on listening to rants when he forgets something important. Knowing it’s not about me but the ADD. So we’ve been married 38 years.

I wanted to divorce my ADHD husband because we didn’t know he had it. How could he be so messy? Why can’t he help me keep the house tidy? Even when we knew what was happening, different behaviors were so difficult. But he’s a wonderful person and we have found accommodations. I put baskets in strategic places he clutters up-just don’t make them too big because they have to be decluttered. Wastebaskets have to be placed near where he sits. There’s a place to put his keys. I’ve learned to tell him when I need quiet.
Why does my brain change when RUclipsr asks me to ring bell, subscribe or like or dislike(it doesn't matter to computer, they both show interest). No normal person wants notifications. You have 8 seconds to catch someone's attention. The top RUclipsrs do not ask for anything or make a joke about it. What a concept!

This is perhaps the best video I’ve listened to on the subject. I see myself and others in so many of the traits here. I’m not officially diagnosed, but pretty sure I’m checking all the boxes here. @@DocSnipes She also has depression on top of ADHD, which makes it more difficult sometimes to discern when we're texting. I don't know if the lack of conversation is from her ADHD or depression (in which I obv need to give her space). BTW: She has seen doctors for these maladies.And right now I don’t know what to do.

When I was a young child, at the beginning of the school year, my horrible 3rd grade teacher told me that I was not as "bad" as she had been warned by the other teachers I'd had. At the time, I said to myself "what is she talking about?" It was likely my ADHD that drove my prior teachers nuts, and at 49, I am just figuring this stuff out. I also think this dovetails into some of the scapegoating abuse I experienced throughout childhood. I often said to my late Mom, "I just want to be (and feel) 'normal.'" I knew (and was told often) that something was just not right with me.
I’m sorry that happened to you. It really shows how ignorant people are, especially about mental health. Teachers were one of my worst fears growing up because of that. I felt worthless and like I couldn’t measure up to their favorite students who were more engaged and “smart.” Now I work as a registered nurse in my dream specialty and a lot of people look up to me, but I still get small flashbacks from those rude comments.
@@DocSnipes I put my keys and wallet in the same place every day. Also, while working at my job from home, I usually have some kind of media turned on as background noise so I don't get too bored. Finally, creating checklists for chores has sometimes been helpful.

Both me and my boyfriend have adhd and I’ve done a lot of work to get over social anxiety. However and I’ve struggled with this too, he seems to get fixated on one thing and nothing else matters. For example he’s into the magic the gathering card game and sometimes those games can go on for like 4 hours straight and I just don’t have the patience to play a game for hours like that. How do I tell him I’m not interested in that but wanna focus on the relationship we have and build some memories together. I understand we all have our things but seeing him and his friends play it can get emotionally draining because they get so into it. I’m 23 and I don’t wanna leave the relationship but it can be excruciating because he’s so infatuated with the game where to a point it’s fine, but I would much rather live in the real world 90% of the time. I also helped him clean his room and the next time I went to his house it was so messy as in clothes were everywhere and I really do care for him but it can be hard

Respectively, MOST people hear ADHD as a negative and it gives them an excuse and a crutch, especially young people who are finding themselves and insecure. I still prefer the term high energy. I also have seen more success getting rid of the drugs and labels then using drugs and labels

Thank you very much Doc, this video has been relief for me,my son has ADHD, I didn't know it on till few months ago he was diagnosed ,he is 20,, he struggled with rejections, frustrations because no one understands what was happening with him, He is now in the university but He cannot focus on his studies,but hyper focus on his phone, laptop or Tv, that he doesn't remember to eat or go to sleep when he supposed, he is always disorganized and forgotful, he find it difficult to adjust or take correction, he lack self control,if he sees anything he likes around him ,eg cake or pizza,if he doesn't get it,he becomes rest, in morning He cannot get out of the Bed on his own if I don't go and wake him up,He is never time conscious , now I have better understanding of his condition and how to help him. I was inschool at the wrong time. ADHD wasnt really recognized so i feel like my education was lesser then everyone elses.. No one talked to me about what i would have to do to go to college .. It ws haard i did graduaate but that was where my education stopped....
