I actually like the game for all the reasons Tom didn't! The funky cloth board, the odd suits, and the quirky artwork all appeal to me, and I found the game engaging. Maybe I'm biased because I'm from Portland, The Decemberists' home town. Oh well, you can't win them all!
I play this game with a dedicated foursome. We've probably had six or seven full games. I've yet to figure out a strategy, but the woman who's won every game so far played lots of Casino before, so that rhythm and skill Tom was talking about must be there.
I was a Kickstarter backer for this, and I loved it once I got just before Thanksgiving. My family and I played it a TON over the holidays, and we loved it. The Luminaries provide such interesting strategy and variance in each game. The more I played, the more I realized how much depth was there. Frankly, this is the 2nd-best game I got in 2017. (The best was Scythe.) It definitely feels like an old card game like Bridge or Spades. I absolutely love this game.
It's worth noting, I think, that the fifth suit and luminary cards are advanced variants/expansions. I've played this game quite a bit and enjoy it, and it reminds me of Onirim in that if you just jump into the advanced variants without grounding yourself in the base game first, the whole experience feels much more chaotic than it actually is. It's really great to see someone sowing the fool, and then changing the season so that they can't harvest it and get the points. I mention that scenario only to say that changing the box position, sowing, and all of those chaotic bits definitely have their basis in strategy.
I have this game and, by in large, like it. It's strategic not in the sense that you set out with a plan for victory, but instead you always have to be aware of the situation. You need to pay attention to the cards you have, the cards that have been played, the cards on the board, which luminaries are out, and how the board has been rotated. It's very much a reactionary game: you assess the situation and figure out how to respond accordingly. True, there are often very limited choices, so the trick is being aware of the possibilities as they arise.
Stock piling is a gamble, but it's supposed to be.
You definitely have to play this game, despite its simplicity, a handful of times before it really clicks. Not saying this as an accusation, but I'm curious how many times Tom played it.
Short term strategy -> tactics
So it is a tactical game, not a strategical.
This is our go-to game for our group of 4 when we don't want to learn something new or don't have as much time to play. We love a ton of games but this has become the one we all can agree on to play on any given day. I like it quite a bit
I would be interested to hear Zee's opinion of the game since he apparently knows Casino. I have the game and have played it a couple of times. It definitely feels like there is something there just under the surface, the way trick taking games often do. So much of the information is either hidden or based on chance, that it may be difficult to see what's going on without playing the game many times. Perhaps playing with hands revealed would illuminate things.
'Tournament at Camelot' has also 'old' artwork, but looks gorgeous!
that is actually a good game tho
He didn’t like a game. Time to read all the comments saying it was one of their favorite games of the year.
Im going in. Cover me!
Sad times where contradictory debate is allowed... (sigh)
I love this game. It's chaos at first, but becomes less so with more familiarity. Tom has an opinion I don't agree with, I'm not going to go cry about it though. This game may not be for everyone.
Maybe this variant is different but both games this is based off of are very strategic. Seen a guy play hundreds and hundreds of games over the years against many different people and don't think I ever seen him lose a game. We played for $20 a game with groups of 6-8 people and saw him leave with most others broke. So the strategy is there but maybe an extra rule or two in this one ruins that.
A complicated Casino or Scopa variant.
After playing the game a few times, I can't agree with you here Tom.
I´m still confused, Tom: did you like it or not? :-)
I like the look but not a big fan of the game. We will still play it but only once in a while. I think it is a good game for family guests as it is easy to learn and looks cool.
I love the deck, why aren’t normal cards after the seasons. Hearts spades clubs diamonds? What nonsense is that lol
glad I backed out of the KS...whew!
I like the old timey wimey. This game is dope. The strategy isn't intuitive, but its just a fun game you don't have to think too hard about.
I'm not defending the game or the designer but isn't this a game based off a prop in a music video? I think his hands were tied a bit. However, it still looks bad.
Wynn Zetterberg ya it’s associated to The Decemberists - it was a fake game in some press photos they did. From there it was decided to make it a real game.
Wynn Zetterberg yep it was
As a decemberist fan and their gentleman of the road tour it fits them well, however I backed out concidering the gameplay seemed too chaotic. Love the look actually of the cards.
Also i think Tak based off a fake game from Wise Man's Fear is much better and actually interesting.
Since playing casino after this review, i actually would enjoy it with the cards and the odd rules makes sense after some additional plays. I may give this a shot if the gaming group ever gets a copy although I am also happy just playing casino
haha, so predictable from the elegant grown-up cover that you are not going to like it anyway. no matter how much you try to motivate your opinion, the case was lost from the very beginning.
btw worth mentioning it is 'presented' by the decemberists, the hobby is spreading so much it now flirts with indie music !
The immediate look turned me off right away.. The old timey feel does nothing for me at all. I'm also not much of a card player, so that is another strike, and then comparing it to trick taking games.. I'm slowly backing away. Nothing about this game appeals to me at all. I think I'd be hard pressed to even try it.
How much of Tom hating this game had to do with its pseudo-occult theming?
Seems too fiddle.
