A very young Muse played the Battle of the Bands at the English Riviera Centre in Torquay on Saturday 26th of November 1994.
My friend's band also played also played that night, I am sure this was the only remaining video of the event. Enjoy this rare glimpse of an amazing band before they found their sound.
I have also been informed that this was Muse's 1st real gig but I cannot confirm that.
I've been informed that the songs are as follows: in no particular order: Weakening Walls, Yellow Regret, Small Minded, Pointless Loss and A Turn To Stone

No ideas what the 2nd half of your sentence meant there... it kinda went squiffy.
I mean: there are counter videos where it's supposed to count all same things in one video. I thought of making such video but including Matt breathing in before every possible line.

Haha my band (Generator) also played that very same battle of the bands, remember it well! They also played with us and another band called Foxys Nuclear Haircut at Totnes Pavillions....

Yup, Muse won from what i remember. I remember also playing my first gig with a band called Fixed Penalty, who had no less than Chris on drums!

+Darren Mosley I'm reading their biography right now ^^ In this clip they were playing as Rocket Baby Dolls (fairly known in the ol' Muse fanbase), *BUT* this name was changed for the Battle of the Bands - as well as because they had developed their music to something not remniscent of their then current name - Gothic Plague.
Apparently the gig turned into a mini-riot after Dom smashing the drums at the end of the show, and Muse were declared the out-and-out winners for "taking the piss".

Shyissonotboring They got noticed fo sho but it took a heck of alot more than just this contest. They played live anywhere and everywhere for a long ass time building up a devoted fan base. Ya gotta luv their two buddies doing "THE GRUNGE" dance rofl so awesome...and Matt's hair hahaha wtf AHdorable!

Its amazing how they went from a garage band to being on of the most talented bands in the world. Matt is a genius!

It seems they are still green there, but something Big was growing inside. Only three years later the record companies fought over them as soon as they heard the Showbiz demo. Awesome document.
Great to see a band as big as Muse went through all the crappy little gigs/battle of the bands etc. Good for young bands starting out to see that all the hard work can pay off.
I've been absolutely obsessed with Muse since early 2018, and it's so cool to see this - I didn't even *exist* in 1994 HAHAHAHA
Muse put a video on instagram today where Matt talks about this concert. It was indeed their first real gig!
it's still crazy to think that they are HUGE now. we must started somewhere.. and the fact that the band is established since '94 the year I was born. it feelsike we grew up together. and that makes muse very special to me

Noticed this as well, seems like Matt was really going for that Cobain feeling. You can hear the same thing on Showbiz (esp. songs like Cave), but this video really shows it a lot more.
I think he was listening to Jeff Buckley at the time too, look at his guitar. The choruses have Jeff Buckley esque finger picking between the heavy Nirvana-like parts. He's like a proverbial style sponge, he absorbs everything and transmutes it into his own ha.

Dude... this is more than ten years ago, they were almost kids. I think production does a lot for them now, but there's talent on the basis of it. And I think, effort and perseverance is what we see now. The talent is domething you develop, not something you're just born with. They had it in this video, they took it further and made it one of the best bands in the world.
This should inspire any band to give it a real shot if Muse can go from this to what they are now

came here after watching dom interview saying that small minded was their first song written and it's like for gcse 😂 from this video itself you can tell how heavy grungy sounds were influenced. dom said the same and it makes sense how they came out with showbiz. it's what they write in early days. now they have evolved in many ways and it just upsetting how og fans said muse has changed. when in fact they've improved a lot musically. if you're in that industry, how can you not experiment with such amazing technologies?? and it's matt bellamy we're talking about. he's a music prodigy

They changed the name for this competition. They were known as Rocket Baby Dolls.
Alka-Young The description says this is a Battle of the Bands in Torquay, November 1994. They were Muse at this point. The first Battle was early in the year, in their home town of Teignmouth, and they changed their name a week after this
The announcer literally says Muse
People used to write FUCK MUSE all over the walls at the Exeter music practice room because they got preferential treatment and more practice time because they were already better than all the other locals bands aged 18 or 19.
This is the best thing with youtube! - The main reason it was made. To find all those things that was impossible to find when I was a kid.
This is definitely interesting to compare how much they've grown- into best live act in the world :L
