How to Add Guitar Tabs to a Video Lesson with Free Programmes
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 авг 2024
- This video will show you how to add moving guitar tab to a guitar video lesson. I'll show you to get the tab to playthrough in sync with your playing. I'll be using both Musescore and OBS Studio in this tutorial. Both are free programmes and you can find links to download them below. All you'll need is a program to edit your videos with. I'll be using Adobe Premiere Pro in this tutorial but any video editing software will do and the methods will be the same. I've used Final Cut to make these videos in the past and its the exact same method.
Having the tab moving along in time with your playing is a great way to improve the production value of your guitar lessons on RUclips and it will really help the people who watch your guitar videos learn the parts.

What song are you going to make a tab video for?
Inside The Whale - Entwined (Danish 90's grunge band). Sometimes i make tab sheets on paper, other times i just make notes, like:
A piece
Chorus
B piece
Oooh sound + modulation
A piece
Bridge
..... and so on.
I learn songs by seeing others play it (often with on-screen tabs). It would be nice to be able to do the same for others.
@@Jake_and_the_bass Nice one, sometimes notes like that are all you need. I've never heard the song or of the band. Will need to check them out.
@@JoshMcGeechan on a side note: just saw your "gimme shelter" guitar video. If you ever want to do a co-op of the song, i'll do the bass.
@@Jake_and_the_bass cheers man, changing the focus of the channel to more editing and postproduction tutorials but will give you a shout if i go back to making guitar vids.
Hey Josh. Nice video.
So if I use a backing track that is already existing on RUclips can I have copyright issues?? And I guess I should create my own backing track to prevent that right?
Sorry if it sounds silly but I am completely new to this
I want to make a tab for the solo of stairway to heaven.
Cheers
Jeez this involves more editing than I was expecting. I assumed people were using some specially made software to inject their guitar pro tabs into videos.
You can change the page view from "Page View" to "Continuous View" then select only the section of the screen where the tabs are. It'll auto-scroll and you won't have to do nearly as much editing.
Great tip. Thanks!
I was thinking exactly that! And that the video would be more loyal to the "Free Programs" concept if you would use DaVinci Resolve, or even better as it is FOSS like OBS and musescore, ShotCut. I was doing this with the sadly outgraded tuxguitar, but thanks to the vs 4 upgrade and this video I guess I got no excuse anymore to not use musescore.
Thanks for this video...I'm going to add tabs to my bass covers
Excellent intro, Josh. Calm, concise, attention-grabbing and to the point. And I haven't even watched the video yet! I'm doing a Swedish lesson first... My guitar teaching videos need a lot more work, and you're going to help me a lot. Thanks in advance.
Awesome, thank you!
Absolutely brilliant video my friend. Thank you so much.
No problem. Glad it helped
Thats very helpful, thank you!
Thank you Josh. I was looking to learn this and I found your video. It really helped me. Just wanted to say "Thank you Josh" You have really helped me. God Bless.
Thanks very much. Very glad I could be a help.
Nicely done tutorial and using free software. Thank you and subscribed.
Thanks for subscribing! Musescore is a really good program
@@JoshMcGeechan it really is. I do wish that I could simply type in a fret number on a particular string instead of the note though to input the notes. Perhaps that is possible and I just haven’t figured out how to do it. Whenever I click on a particular string I just get a default zero but I can’t seem to change that.
There is probably a way to do it. Not sure myself but the community forum is really good on there website. Someone might know how to do it there.
Hey Josh, great video!! I've been doing these types of videos over on my channel for a while now haha! I used to do them exactly how you're making them here, but recently I've moved toward a slightly different process. You have a great channel, keep up the quality content 👌🏻😃🎸
Thanks very much Jose. The way your doing them now looks great. It makes the lessons very clear and easy to follow!
@@JoshMcGeechan Thanks a lot for checking them out man!
Wanna share what method you are using? Thanks
hey, I just want to say thank you for this tutorial 🙏
I've been thinking about transcribing some originals - I already use Musescore for tab and OBS Studio for screen capture. Just need to record me playing the song and then fire up Sony Vegas and put the tracks together. Thanks for putting this video out
Great video! Very helpful! Thanks Josh!
Thanks very much for watching.
Great tutorial man. This REALLY helped me.
No worries. Glad it has helped
Thank you for this my friend ! Excellent stuff !
No problem. Thanks for watching
@@JoshMcGeechan is there a way to showcase a guitar playing this on the side? Like in Guitar Pro?
Great video, thank you for the clear tutorial! I dig the tune as well! Cheers!
Thanks very much.
You don't have to do all that note up and down stuff if you want to change the string that the tab appears on. Just grab the tab number and move the tab number up or down
Thank you 🎉
Very nice man. Valuable content.. Keep well
thank you
No problem, thanks for watching.
It reminds me "Balmorhea - The Winter"
This is SO HELPFUL! Thank you!
No problem, thanks for watching. 🙂

Thanks for watching.
Watching this for first time, I'm looking for tab for John butler trio's version of pharrell Williams " Happy "
What I ment is , I didn't know what this video was about. I'll let everyone know what I think about it .
I searched for this kind of tutorial and you've nicely done it. thanks! (by the way, where are you from? curious about your accent hahaha)
Thanks Marcelo, glad to have been able to help. I'm from Scotland.
@@JoshMcGeechan cool, I've been to scotland years ago... Edinburgh and Highlands up to John O'Groats. great people, beautiful country. cheers from south of Brazil!
Thanks Marcelo, I would love to visit Brazil!
Musescore downloads but is not opening on my laptop.
Thanks for this lesson!
No problem. Thanks for watching 😊
If you wanted to also have a metronome sounding in the video, is there a way to have the metronome be part of the MuseScore screen recording? Or would you need to track the metronome separately?
You could record the internal sound to get the metronome but you would also be recording the midi playback. I think it would probably be easiest just to track the metronome separately.
@@JoshMcGeechan Thanks.
Thanks for this video. Instead of Muse Score, can Guitar Pro 8 do the same thing?
Yeah it should be able to. I imagine because thats a paid software it would be slightly better.
Awesome! 👏👍
Thanks 😊
Thank you!!!
No problem, thanks for watching!
Wow I like this video with hundreds thumbs up, thanks a Lot

It is my first time know how to use OBS and Musescore to be able create Guitar TAB , I tried ten times to understand myself how to do it, eventually I reach here, thank you so much.
Last question how can I find OBS for free??? Thanks
Thank you :)
Thanks so much :)
No problem at all. Thanks for watching!
amazing vid and presentation ,, ,,like how God made us 2b ,,, one love , one like ,and one new subbie,, that's for being clever , one love
Hi. Question: How did you crop the musescore video exactly. I couldn't see how you did it at 12:59. Thanks.
I add in the crop effect in premiere and you can adjust the sides.
Thanks 🙏
No problem. Thanks for watching.
good videos brother ! try not to hunch over your back and your health. greetings from Argentina
Thanks Joaquín. I'll do my best, old habits are hard to break.
Is it able to change the color of staff and background color of the sheet, for example, change the background color to transparent?
Not that I'm aware of. YOu could maybe add an effect in your editing program
Hi I really like this song 🎶 would you mind send me the link for guitar tab I also play the guitar 😊
Thank you. I don't have the tabbed saved any more unfortunately. If you take a screenshot you'd be able to get it all :)
Thank you I already did screenshot of it and working on it and practicing 🙂
i am beginner will you make a lesson video on just guitar tablature so that i don't have knowledge about staff notation i just want to do that of direct guitar tablature please
Hi, its a very similar process. This link here should show you how to do it. All you have to do is select tab only when you open a new document. musescore.org/en/handbook/3/tablature
@@JoshMcGeechan i already read please make lesson video
hello, im trying to change the original e a d g b e standard tuning to d a e a c# e, is it possible to do this? Great vid btw
Hi Jonah, thanks very much. There is a section in this link called change tuning which lets you know how to do it. Hope this helps. musescore.org/en/handbook/2/tablature
What if the score doesn't synch?
You should be able to manually adjust layers so that they do. If not you'll probably need to record it again and make sure the tempo you play is the same as the musescore tempo.
This was great.
But the backgorund music was very annoying.
I was find this video alot, now I see, check my video it was so poor 🎸😭,,, I will try like you do
Hi sir..how can I add tabs aloney?
Yeah you can. When you open a new score instead of choosing "guitar + tablature", just choses guitar tablature. See 1:15 in the video.
@@JoshMcGeechan aww thank you so much sir 😊
Premiere Pro is not free
This is really great, but I would much rather pay someone $10 on fiverr to do this for me at this point...
yeah if someone does it for a tenner that would be well worth it.
@@JoshMcGeechan totally, glad you agree. Its good to learn these things, but it's also good to pay other people when the net gain is worth it.
musescore isnt free? im being told to pay for something
maybe its because i went to musescore.com and not musescore.org?
That's strange, are you sure you've got the right link? I have never had to pay for it and it still seems to be free when you follow this link. musescore.org/en
@@brokenvanityboston Hey, Yeah I think that must be why. I think they sell tabs and stuff for the platform there but the actual program is free if you go to the .org site. Hope that works for you. All the best.
