  • Cobar, a town in central western New South Wales, Australia, originated as a copper-mining centre in the 19th century and continues to primarily focus on mining. Its name may come from an Aboriginal word meaning “red earth” or could be a corruption of the word “copper.” The town’s economy is largely based on the mining of base metals and gold. Located 712 km (442 mi) by road northwest of Sydney, Cobar sits at the intersection of the Kidman Way and Barrier Highway, on the eastern edge of the outback. As of the 2016 census, Cobar had a population of 3,990, while the Cobar Shire, covering an area of 44,065 sq km, had approximately 4,700 residents. Definitely worth a visit!
