I played First Suite in my high school honor band my sophomore year and at my first symphonic winds concert two months ago. In fact, after the last note of Chaconne, the conductor's baton flew to the French horns. 😂😂😂 I also played Second Suite in my senior year for pre-festival and festival.
We just started playing this masterpiece for our middle school (yes middle school) symphonic band. It is very challenging, but we still have time before our performance in June I love this piece!
I loved playing this piece! I love the low brass, low woodwinds. It was pretty tough piece for your lower instruments and i always loved a good challenge. :)
We played this my first year of college and all I remember was how much I hated 8:10 - 8:20. I was the only euphonium and we didn't have any horns so I was all alone playing notes that I had never played until then. That Bb was my worst nightmare for the entire semester.
C trumpets are too bright for this work and the bass sax is downright intrusive. Would also prefer a much looser head on the bass drum as this one is, again, too bright and shallow. But that bass sax was hardly ever in balance!!
I finished reading the comments right as the song ended Edit: it didn't take me 11 minutes to read them I just started reading when there were 3 minutes left
Assuming y’all are fellow percussionists, is it just me or does anyone else think the crash cymbals sound a little dull?? Idk but i think it should be a little brighter and maybe ring a little linger in my opinion. No hate on the player just the cymbals lol
Mr. Haithcock should know better than to allow C trumpets for this piece. It's not the characteristic sound Holst wanted. Otherwise, a fantastic performance.
This was pretty good. Sections were balanced, there were a couple of jumped notes. I give kudos to the students who did their best. Was the director/conductor having a bad day? Phoning it in doesn’t look good.
Sheri Schmidt, I think the video sync is not totally accurate. You can see the video gradually gets ahead of the audio (check trumpet fingerings and triangle hits, etc), and that may explain why his conducting seems a little “off”
All of our videos are meticulously synched down to the sample and exact measurements from camera to conductor position to account for audio time delays. Haithcock very frequently leads the ensemble (conducts with gestures just ahead of the band by fractions of a second), which is very common for conductors to do. He leads without getting in the way of the ensemble.
Unless you had to answer stupid questions about it like "what would be happening in a movie while this piece was playing" No joke I have to answer that
One of the best interpretations of the intermezzo I have heard so far!
Great music, there's something really special in symphonic bands and the music they have in their repertories ^^
This was incredible! I remember playing this and Second Suite in F in high school. Love Gustav Holst.
fr i did this in my first year of middle school

@@codywear8195 did u play good
@@mastershifu9149 it was good for a middle school band
10:09 I love this gesture by Dr. Haithcock! That’s just plain artistry at its best!
Gustav Holst was my fellow Anglican Churchman.

What school
how tf r ppl in middle school playing this
@@mastershifu9149 probably poorly.
What a great piece! I played this in high school band and I can still remember its tune.
i would have to argue this is even better payed than north texas. The sound is very balanced.
NOW THAT'S MY KIND OF CONDUCTOR!!!!! HE IS CONDUCTING THE BAND!!!!! HE NEEDS NO SCORE!!!!!
He's probably conducted this piece so many times in his career that he could do it in his sleep 🤣
He is obviously a well-trained conductor. Juilliard? Curtis?
Bass sax is so cool, but it's really unbalances the bass section without 2 bass clarinets and a contrabass
The horn solo at 2:05 is so pretty
Nice performance, and what an amazing room!
Awesome band...tho grimaced a bit to hear the timid horns consistently lagging behind middle of first movement, man up!
I too remember this from high school band. What an overall fine piece of REAL music. 🎷📯🎺
So amazing... also the trumpets aren't powering over the entire band this time.
You can really hear that bass sax in Intermezzo
I love that bass saxophone sound.
I loved playing this piece! I love the low brass, low woodwinds. It was pretty tough piece for your lower instruments and i always loved a good challenge. :)
why are they all playing C trumpets? I get the "symphonic" nature of the ensemble, but ffs these parts are written for Bb trumpets and cornets.
Simply for timbre reasons. Not completely noticeable to the untrained ear but the C trumpet does provide a bit of a richer color than a Bb trumpet
Muy Bueno exelente,..!!
Man, that is such an amazing snare sound!
A Bass Sax!
Is that a bass sax growling away? I like the addition.
The part is actually written for bass sax!
The Bass trombone part is fantastic in this

Trombones at 4:21 !!! Yes!!! 👌👌
Probably my favorite moment in any piece ever

I am not watching this for homework
The woodwinds are great!
MORE BASS DRUM!
I agree wholeheartedly

Definitely a good way to keep that many clarinet players busy and out of trouble at the same time.
Mr. Haithcock should know better than to allow C trumpets for this piece. It's not the characteristic sound Holst wanted. Otherwise, a fantastic performance.
It's supposed to be 4 cornets, 2 trumpets and 2 flugelhorns.
I believe old Gustav would've loved this performance.
@@zackwoods5077 In the 1948 edition yes, however Holst's manuscript called for 2 cornets, 2 B-flat trumets, and 2 E-flat trumpets.
Beautiful tone, but the first mvt is a little too fast for me. Even the clarinets rush in places.
Oh, that's how its played...Michigan excellence as usual...GO BLUE :-)
Moments where players aren't together in tempo
Holst. Hill. BRAVO!
👏👏👏👏👏 from 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
The camera shutter sounds in the intermezzo made me gaslight myself
4:23 holy snare
Underrated piccolo player
What makes you say she's underrated, I've heard she's very highly rated.
🌈💐💙💚💜💛🌹❤️🌈
Go Blue!
Could this group NOT start together?? Sheesh
A very fine performance, but cornet parts should be played on cornet.
👏🏼👏🏼
Preciosa😍👏🏼
Ugh, the lyric part of the March sounds like Concerto for Bass Saxophone and wind band.

Reminds me of Karajan, in a not so positive way. Mike is conducting the band inside his head. Not sure the band in front of him is on the same page.

Baylor is better.
I personally prefer the performance by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra.
Third piece too fast.
no
Works at that tempo, but perhaps too close to the Intermezzo's tempo. Good band, this.
God I have to watch this whole thing for class.
