I would like to add a little clarification on this story. The Barkley Marathons is a 100 mile endurance event that is extremely difficult. Runners must not only run, but collect pages from books using specific routes in a forrest. Gary Robbins, a phenomenal athlete (and a fantastic human being) was 6 seconds off of a finishing time, but used an incorrect route. His error was in route finding, which caused him to take an incorrect route and miss the cutoff by 6 seconds. Had he made the cutoff, he still WOULD NOT have finished due to using the incorrect route.
He is still a superhuman badass, but...he came in to the finish line from the wrong direction (on the wrong trail). And also 6 seconds late. They make a big story about the 6 seconds because it grabs viewers' attention much more than "Dude gets disqualified on the final lap of a race."
It's not cliclbait. "Dude disqualified from the final lap of race" doesn't portray the whole story. It's like hearing Madeline McCann was found today and the title was "missing girl found". True but not the whole truth. Cliclbait obscures information to entice viewers as they assume the obscured information is amazing, when in reality it isn't. This gives more factual information.
Well, this was actually bad publicity, because even if he had made it, he kind of took the wrong trail and was going to be disqualified anyway. I don't know if he meant to or not, but he basically cheated and still didn't make it.
Hold to the rules? Isnt really that hard to enforce considering he was already disqualifies even if he did finish in time because he didnt even take the correct path.
That literally happened to this boy at my school. The teacher was like if I don't have it in the next ten seconds, I, not excepting it. The kid was writing his name, missed the time limit, and handed it in 4 seconds after she finished counting down, and she said "nope. I told you when it was supposed to be turned in." And gave it back to him. Boy was he pissed
the fact that he took that so well and did not need to resort to shouting, he had an incredible show of control and reign over his emotions (I will admit if I was in that position, wrong turn or not, there would've been some voices raised) that was in of itself incredible!
To clarify for all of the confused commenters: (my facts come from the mini documentary on the 2017 Berkley Marathon) This race is 100 miles in a 60 hours limit. It is through extreme terrain, mountains, cliffs, mud slides, and dense forests, there are very few trails. Weather is usually horrendous. It tests endurance, orienteering, and mental capacity. Runners have to find 13 pages hidden along the pre-determined course and return all of them. The runners must also stay on the determined trail to be considered for a finish. In his last few miles of the race, the fog and rain and extreme exhaustion caused Gary to pass out. When he came to, he had lost his sense of direction and Gary went down the wrong side of a mountain, adding 30 minutes to his run. Even if he had finished in time, he wouldn't have qualified as a finisher because he took the incorrect route. There have only been 17 finishers of this race's history, the most recent in 2017, next one before that in 2012. Heartbreaking for Gary, but definitely a true testament to how extremely near-impossible the race is.
You're a crook! You're a cheat & swindler! How could you do a thing like this, build up a little boys hopes and smash all his dreams to pieces... You're an inhuman monster!!
Amazing story. This year's BM had some drama too and this story is most what got me interested in this undercovered event. Amazing and tragic. This year a runner got disoriented and wound up being picked up by a police officer in a nearby town.
Seeing interviews with track cyclists that have beards, There's a good chance beards actually help with aerodynamics by slightly diffusing air before it hits the mass of the chin and neck. So if he shaved it he may of been 12 seconds late for all we know.
The people saying oh it doesnt matter he only finished 6 seconds late. They obviously aren't into competitive sports and stuff like this because it doesnt matter if he had been late 0.5 seconds he still lost and that alone is heartbreaking
Bobo24 You're arguing that it's a good thing to be a hyper-competitive person who can't stand to lose? I understand the competitive mentality quite well, (played D1 tennis in college), but if you think of this video as heartbreaking then in my opinion you're missing the point. This guy did what 99% of the world's people couldn't come close to achieving, I respect the hell out of people like this guy. He finished, never gave up, and that is what matters.
Crosby4hyg I don't find the video heartbreaking but the fact that he was late by 6 seconds on a race that most humans on earth would have no chance in hell at completing is heartbreaking. And as klavier285 says losing is losing doesnt matter how far or close you was from winning
This marathon was 60 HOURS long, let's try and keep things in perspective here guys. Shaving 6 seconds off of a 2-5 mile run is definitely a huge deal, but a 60 hour race? No.
i doubt he was running for 60 hours. its 130 kms. at a joging speed thats like 13 hours. what he did for the other 47 hours is beyond me. perhaps he went to a bbq and took in a show or two.
100+ miles with ~55,000ft of vertical gain. Finishers take breaks of no longer than 30 minutes between each of 5 loops. There is a 12 hr cut-off time per loop.
100% it evens out to 36 min miles. 8+ minutes per 1/4 mile. I guarantee that if you walked as slow as you possibly could around a track, you'd smash 8:00+ per 1/4 mile
FF: He participated the following year and decided to drop out, which he wrote a paper about. in late 2020, He was almost ran over purposefully, but managed to escape with few injuries! Hope he's well
Trigg Ethridge he knew the time limit going into it, I don't care if it's six seconds, six minutes, or six hours. if you start bending the rules you take out the integretity of the competition and the merit of the accomplishment
BigDippas, this race isn't a competition, in fact he was the only one to actually finish the race. durring the 30 years of this race only 14 people have even finished the race, and when someone finishes they get absolutely nothing
if you watch the whole thing on his channel he wasn't just 6 seconds short, he was also went the wrong way after the last book check point, so he went 2 miles off course in the wrong direction (the course designer says "you have to come in on the right trail anyway") which would cause a disqualification even though he got all of the pages from the checkpoint, so he was more than 6 seconds over. Still a huge accomplishment, i hope he tries again, he is a great athlete.
Seeing interviews with track cyclists that have beards, There's a good chance beards actually help with aerodynamics by slightly diffusing air before it hits the mass of the chin and neck. So if he shaved it he may of been 12 seconds late for all we know.
Not to rub salt in the wound, but the race guy said he came in on the wrong trail anyway. Maybe a shortcut? So they might not have counted it regardless of time.
firebirdude2 If you're implying that he cheated, navigation is part of the contest and he probably just had problems finding the correct path and there's nobody out there to help you and bring you back if you encounter problems so you have to find your way back on your own one way or another even if you don't find the correct path, but you're correct that it wouldn't have counted.
yeah it would not have counted even if he made it in time, but would not really call it a shortcut, he had to swim cross rivers and other obstacles he may even have a quicker time if he stayed on trail
While you are correct it was not a shortcut he was extremely sleep deprived and you have to navigate the whole course by yourself and he made one wrong turn at the end.
no need to feel bad, he still made it, probably with minimal to no sleep and missed by six seconds, its still absolutely hard for most people to do, he did very well

Wtf are you talking about, you absolute fuckwit? Endurance races have only become more and more extreme. Running a marathon was considered and extreme endurance feat in the past, now regular Joes do it for fun. And endurance junkies are proposing 500 mile races.
I can not understand how anyone can run for 60 FREAKING HOURS ?!?!?!?!?! That's over two and half days just RUNNING and nothing else. I'm too weak and lazy to even be awake 10 hours while sitting in my room watching RUclips videos.

I like the old school mentality 😎 Nice to know that not everyone gets a trophy is still a thing ❤️
Wtf are you talking about, you absolute fuckwit?
Endurance races have only become more and more extreme. Running a marathon was considered and extreme endurance feat in the past, now regular Joes do it for fun. And endurance junkies are proposing 500 mile races.
I mean it's not 60 hours and 6 seconds for a reason. Better time next time :P
Imagine if the wrong route made him 6 seconds slower. Then if he went the right way he would’ve made it perfect and he wouldn’t have been disqualified
Yup it's sad. The wrong track in the end actually did make him slower by many minutes.
I ran 2 miles about 18 months ago. I'm still recovering.
The organizer was very kind and gracious.
I can't even *lay* for 60 hours
I can not understand how anyone can run for 60 FREAKING HOURS ?!?!?!?!?! That's over two and half days just RUNNING and nothing else. I'm too weak and lazy to even be awake 10 hours while sitting in my room watching RUclips videos.
lol gold
Go walk a 36 minute mile which is 60 hour pace.
He would have made it if he had a pack of snickers
You are not you when you are hungry
I feel bad for the guy. I'm sorry he missed it by just 6 seconds. Well he's got nothing to be ashamed of. He still amazingly great. 2 Thumbs Up to him 👍👍
As a fellow canadian i am proud of you❤
*me in that marathon*
*Takes 30 steps*
"Holy crap. I'm done, I'm going home." *Grabs Doritos out of bag*
*Talking with stuffed mouth*.
"Cya home mom you should not have touched those sign papers."
He finished it in my eyes! Great athlete!
the Barkley is intended for you to never make it.
So you'll keep this video up and available but not the Dec 31st 2019 11:30pm CTVNS program. With the GL-ITCH ? yeah...
I believe it is the NY marathon which requires a 2:40:00 qualifying time to compete in it. My cross country coach in high school ran a 2:40:01…
he didn't even run on the right trail...
He went on the right trail, he just passed out for a lil and lost his sense of direction and went at the near end of the marathon on the wrong trail

Gone in 6 seconds
When you’re a bush camper and almost win
The integrity of that referee to actually relay the correct time - i wouldn't have had the heart!
What type of shoes is he wearing during the lace up
