cheap ECONO/MAACO paint job review! CHEAP vs EXPENSIVE paint job. Is it worth it???

- Not every Econo (or any other chain) shop is the same, and the results from my car may be very different than the results someone else gets. I can not stress this enough!
I've heard horror stories from cheap paint jobs, but i've also heard the same from expensive options. It's honestly a coin toss. I am only speaking from my personal experience!
This goes back about 20 years ago, I bought a used 77 L82 corvette, the guy I bought it from also had a silver anniversary edition 78 and had this 77 painted 2 tone gold. I wanted it black but every paint shop started at at least $7k because it was a vette, went to Marco, they did the color change for $1200.00 it look great the day it came out of their shop and still looked great 10 years later when I sold it.

Years ago I had a Mitsubishi Mirage and had a body kit put on (Yeah those days) and took it to Maaco. Paid $499 and the car came out phenomenal. Sold it years later and the paint was still holding up.
I’m trying to imagine a body kit on a Mirage haha. But yeah man, people are sleeping on the cheap paint jobs
@@nyarinyax -- It just looked like an Evolution V body kit. Actually looked cool but it was slow as hell 😂.
Honestly, for everyday driving around town, can't beat the outcome. The one tone also gives it a modern look. Great choice.
Once you wax/polish it the paint will look great. That's a killer price my man, $306 is well worth it. I paid $1100 to paint my 95 Corolla a month ago and the car isn't even worth that haha

How’d it go and what package did you get? I have a ‘00 Chevy Prizm which is basically a corolla and I’m planning on getting their cheapest plan over the whole car but I don’t know if I should just spend the $ and go with the top plan Base+Clear
@@LUHSHUAH I spent the extra $$ for the top plan which was full removal of old paint, complete sanding/dent repair, primer, paint and dual stage clear. It came out great in my opinion and for me personally it was worth the extra money (because I love the car and wanted it done right). The car is undergoing a full restoration mechanically and physically so this just made it worth me dumping the money into. At the end of the day it depends on each car, whether its worth it or not. A 2000 Prizm will always be a 2000 Prizm but if its reliable a paint job to me is worth it (better than buying a new car at $25k+ and paying for 6 years).
I would have painted the door handles and the mirrors red too, but from the grey bumpers it's a major step up. And also, for 300...damn
same painted door handles would of really cleaned up the car abd made it look modern. the mirror is fine since its blends in with the window tint.
I think it looks great man. I've always had good results from maaco. Obviously you're not gonna bring the lambo there but to just get a new paint job on your daily it's a great option.

Two years ago , Maaco did have a paint sale for $299 . Now nowhere near, everything is $1200 , $2000 and up . I hardly do single stage overalls , It’s all basecoat / clearcoat .I’m a painter at a Maaco, so I know.
what’s the difference? i heard to go to econo cause it’s cheaper than maco but they say econo is only single stage while maco is base plus clear coat

I’ve had many cars painted at econo the key is to do any of the major sanding and prep your self and the paint will come out looking good

Idk how long ago this service was done but right now (06/2023), i just did an online estimate for the most basic paiting (same color, no rusty, no inside doors and inside hood painting) and the estimates ranges from $1.1k - $1.7k 🫤

Night and day difference! I bet you feel better riding around in it. I like the color matching bumpers, door trim and mud flaps. It makes it all cohesive. For $300 thats .82 cents a day if it even only lasts a year which is will definitely last depending how it is parked in florida sun.

In 2001 I had Earl Scheib paint a car of mine for $400. It looked decent. But I went from white to blue and anytime I got a chip in the paint the while would show through.
The car looks great now. I've heard that it's not as bad as some people say. The money you spent was well worth it
I hear it has a lot to do with how you treat them too. Kindness goes a long way. Especially when someone is working on your property

Maaco used to paint your entire car for $29.00. That was quite a while back in time !
Upon reflection, I believe the $29 paint jobs were by Earl Scheib, a firm that has evidently folded -- but it WAS real.

I was talking about this to my local Maaco when I was picking my car up. He said he knew of Earl, and apparently he went crazy, opened a gas line in the shop and blew it up with him inside.

It’s not bad for the price. Just keep up with maintaining them as you state and you will be ok I guess. Enjoy it

You get what you pay for I had a bumper repaint it some years ago at Meiko and the color did not match 100% and there was paint overspray. I recently had a brand new car repaired at a Geico express in New York and I ended up with something called orange peel. I think in general the best thing to do is go to a independent body shop with lots of positive reviews you will probably get a better job

Interesting. Do you know if they used any adhesion promotor on your plastic (trim, bumper etc)? This is usually a cause for peoples peeling bumpers that you commonly see riding around (poor prep).
I’m honestly not sure, but I treated all the trim with some protectant afterwards. So even if they did I wouldn’t know
I think that looks amazing. I mean really good....By the way I read you can use WD40 to clean your headlights.
The headlights were fogged up on the inside as well as the outside. So I had to replace the entire unit. But they’re very inexpensive so I was fine just replacing them

Might want to check the nearest Walmart, most of them do headlight restorations for like $50 or something, and they do a good job.

@@nyarinyax There's no need to wrap an 03 Rav4 if you have to pay someone the labor. There are plenty of cheap ways to get it painted though.
Depends on the Maaco you go to. The one I went to in St. Pete Florida did a horrible job - and refused to make good on it... till I showed up with someone from the State's Attorney's office.
Had a very good experience with Maaco years ago. Dirt cheap. Was impressed. Regular body shops are really insane. They have become insurance job dependant. They want big bucks. They use the excuse oh the paint this and that. No they don't wanna do it cause they make more on insurance jobs.

I worked for a used car wholesaler years ago- we'd use $200 maaco jobs and then color sand the paint.

Forgive me, I'm in my 50's and only drive Toyota trucks with manual transmission, use rattle can if I need to.... 😆

@@GardenerEarthGuy haha no they definitely do. But it seems like many people are scared to get a paint job done at an affordable price, and then go through the color sanding process to make it shine like a lot of us were taught to do.

get a metal polish (mothers mag polish) for those headlights . take that right out with a buffer .. make em shine

So probably just a solid color enamel with no metallic and certainly no clear coat. No wet sand, no buff.

Single stage will last up to a year before it goes bad
If you leave it how it is yes. But if you get it the paint corrected, and add ceramic afterwards, it’ll last much longer

For 300 they probably just painted over the previous paint (1 coat) and then painted 1 coat of clear and called it a day.

@@nyarinyax it is crazy! How did they make any money? Lol but at the same time 4,000 is waaay too much for a maaco paint job but my buddy couldn't find anyone else that would do it. Two shops told him 18,000 to even consider it. It's ridiculous, these body shops get 4-5k to repaint and swap a bumper so they're not in the market to do repaints anymore.

They painted the car about 4 months ago. I think they’re cheaper because of location, but 300 to $1000 is kind of steep haha

painted a car for 3k drove it for a week accident insurance wrote it off wouldnt cover the paint job, got another car used maaco 300 there was over spray scrapped off looked great till I sold it
I had the same experience with the Maaco. Over spray almost everywhere, but a blade and some soap got it right out.
That’s pretty crazy about the accident tho. I would have been pretty upset if the same thing happened to me
@@nyarinyax black ice on multiple overpasses 36 cars wreaked 12 at mine alone but yes very upset my car hit the car in front spun out into oncoming got hit by truck so not much left but not a scratch on me

What is the orange peel? Mixing of the paint?
I’m not 100% sure what causes it, but it’s the texture in the paint. It’s the same textured look you see on oranges (the fruit) hence the name. When I zoom in you can see it in the video a little bit.
Luckily you can usually only see it when you’re very close to the paint

i went to maaco and they would not accept my car, I sand the whole car, but dude was like you need sand it more or i can pay them to do it and it would cost me like $1000.. wtf

@@nyarinyax Hayward, CA.. where you at ? dude said it needs to be sand to the metal otherwise the paint won't adhered to car that well and cause they guarantee the paint job so if its not sand the way they want it they won't do it..
