I wouldn't go so far as to call Dr.Yamane a villain, since he did try to suggest ways to the Japanese forces to not anger Godzilla. Unfortunately Godzilla was out for revenge against mankind for them nuking his undersea home.

"I knew it. It must be Godzilla."
Fun Fact: This film inspired thirty-five sequels and holds the record for the longest-running continuous franchise.
Director Cameo: The man in the electric room who pulls the switch, activating the 300,000-volt tower lines to electrocute Godzilla is Director Ishirô Honda.
That's Hot Fact: The topless women seen on Odo island are elder Ama pearl divers. This is a Japanese tradition in which women free dive in search of pearls. They were not included, just because.
Stunt SNAFU Fact: Godzilla's destruction of the Diet Building had to be done multiple times, necessitating that the miniatures be rebuilt. The staff had spent over thirty days building and detailing the first miniature of the Diet Building, but Tsuburaya deemed it unsatisfactory and had it torn down and rebuilt. And on the first day of shooting, suit actor Tezuka tripped and destroyed the miniature, injuring his jaw and ruining the shot.
Financial Success Fact: An often repeated myth is that the production of this film and Seven Samurai (1954) nearly drove Toho into bankruptcy. This neglects to mention a third Toho film made that year, Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (1954). All three were the most expensive Japanese films made up until that point and big financial risks for Toho. However, there is little evidence to suggest that Toho was ever at risk for bankruptcy. The studio released a total of sixty-eight feature films that year, the most successful of which were those three movies.

21:28 it's a dorsal plates. As for the second Godzilla, it's not because Dr. Yamane is evil, but because it's a hint for the sequel that took place the following year. The most interesting thing is that the main character once again played her role in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Destoroyah is like the living embodiment of an oxygen destroyer. it was the last film of the Heisei era which is closely related to the first film since it was the same story and the first film had a connection with this era. Dr. Yamane is not a villain. In the next film, you'll find out if you watch why he suggested studying it. A way has emerged to take him out of the city and back to the sea

this was a great watch, thank you for this video. I appreciate that you guys seem to really care about the film you're watching in terms of analysis and overall effect. It makes it more than just a simple reaction. This was the first Godzilla movie and it is one of only a handful that have a more serious and dark tone to it. Toho would subsequently make many Godzilla movies shortly after this one, all with varying degrees of silliness lol.
looking through your catalogue of movie reactions, I think any of the "Showa" era Godzilla films (1954 - 1975) would be right up your ally if you're interested in anymore Godzilla. they're a far cry from the dark nature of this one but they're good and charming and stuff. but that's just my opinion, there's really a lot of movies and a lot different ideas experimented over Godzilla's 70 year existence lol

Fun fact: the building Godzilla destroyed, was a movie theater owned by toho studios. There was a reaction where people ran out of the theater fearing the building was destroyed for real

They created an "Americanized" version of this movie by eliminating the anti-Atomic Bomb testing references and added an American Reporter played by Raymond Burr (TV's Perry Mason) to the story. They did a great job adding him to the original Japanese film and most people thought he was always part of the film. Growing up in the 1950's and 1960's the Americanized version was the only version I could see. Only later did I see the original and superior Japanese version "Gojira".
