I tell people who have never seen this movie that it is about grief, and dealing with grief, more than it is a football movie. I thought they did an excellent job of bringing in the different forms that grief manifests itself, with each of the characters having their own type. Anger, depression, and a supply of survivor guilt. As was stated in the movie, it wasn't just a team, or a school, but the entire town suffered immensely. For example, a number of the city fathers were lost in the crash, including 4 of the town's 6 doctors. Fun fact, the rival coach scene really happened. In fact, the coach of West Virginia went beyond what is shown in the movie. He sent several of his assistants to Marshall for a week or two to show them how to run his offense. He later became the winningest coach in NCAA history.

This was based on factual events. There really was a plane that landed in a down town just to buy beers The actor who shot Patrick Swayze in GHOST played Mad Dog in this movie. He drove the truck into the hotel. Miss Stochmocker WHO played in Superman was the state Patrol. Daisy Duke also in the movie if your aware of Grease Monkey Garage..Richard Rawlins & Dennis Collins won the Cannon Ball Race years ago. There still is a race in Fort Stockton TX to Sanderson Tx every year. Police authority actually close this 100 mi highway just to race every year. There is a documentary on this race & it's founder.

The remake cannot compare to the original.

Movie Magic Fact: To get close-ups of the actors during the skydiving sequences, a crane rig with a telescoping arm was built for each actor. The rigs enabled the cast to say their lines while the camera shot them from below and to the side to achieve the sense of floating while skydiving. Kind of a bitter sweet story that happened to me some years back. Open Range has always been my favorite western movie, and I think its the best performance from Costner he's ever done. I became a fan of his because of this movie. And a couple years ago, I got the opportunity to be on the show Yellowstone. Needless to say I was excited for the chance. I ended up doing a rodeo scene in the 2nd season. We shot 1 night, but unfortunately Costner was not involved. A year after that, I got another chance to do it again. This time it was another rodeo scene and shot over 2 nights. During the 2nd night Costner had a roll. And I was planning on fan-boying hard and tell him how much I loved Open Range. But, before he came out, the director laid out the rules and boy he wasn't joking in his tone. We were not allowed to say, speak or anything to Costner. It was basically sit down, shutup, do as we say. Long story short, I never got a chance to actually meet him. However, I was close enough i could smell his cologne when he sat down. But, it was still an incredible experience nonetheless.
