I would give both a 7/10. They both knew how to answer each other's tactic at some point. Nagelsmann made Spain perform much worse than they used to which is one of his qualities. They mostly shut down Yamal and Williams except for the 1-0 for spain where a cumulation of tiny mistakes in the german defence were brilliantly punished by the spanish. Some of Nagelsmann's ideas didnt work but the ingame coaching was rather successful. Germany had enough chances to go up by at least 2 goals in extra time alone.
De La Fuente was really good at outplaying nagelsmann's tactics of creating danger in the last line. That's why he made Sané and Can look useless on the pitch. Switching in Dani Olmo for the injured Pedri was brilliant because they could exploit the spaces between the german lines. This is why olmo was heavily involved in both goals for spain. However, he failed to adapt to the changes that Nagelsmann made which could've backfired in extra time. After wirtz and fullkrug came on the spanish often couldnt even build up properly for like the last 30 minutes of regular time. They had to go for 50/50 long balls against taller players. The germans just missed their chances at the end and didnt get the penalty so de la fuente got a bit lucky there.

In my opinion he made a gamble. It was either: save your strikers for the next match and sub players who can impact the game in a more defensive approach, since they were currently winning and there is not much time left or keep the same forward players through the whole match expecting the same offensive approach. They won by mistake of Rudiger and pure individual brilliance of the Spanish players, his gamble paid off.

  • @GuyJames
    @GuyJames 3 месяца назад +59

Also I think Nagelsmann got a bit of blowback from his decision to try to physically intimidate Spain's young players. Yes he got rid of Pedri but that meant Olmo came on and changed the game. Also nearly all the German defenders ended up yellow carded, and you really don't want Williams and Yamal running at you when one mistake means you're sent off.
It's all very well being aggressive but when the opposition has top quality players who are press-resistant even in defence, the threat can come from anywhere. For example Laporte can get forward and get involved with the attack, or Cucurella. It's not like England where you can just leave Trippier free and he'll constantly pass it backwards.

Germany lacked a clinical finisher up front. Havertz does what he always does: Brilliant combination with the team but can't finish in front of goal for whatever reason.
The team that will win imho is going to be the team that can deploy strikers who take chances successfully and the team generates enough strong chances. France, Netherlands and even England are all capable of this due to their quality in strikers or goal-scorers including midfield.
With Southgate's tactics it does not look likely England will get to this stage, leaving France and Netherlands.

I'm also expect England to finally start producing some reasonable goal stats against the Swiss because it's "do or die" time in the QF's of the tournament and they need to start working effectively further up the pitch as well as controlled in defence. The talent as with France is there and it's probaby time to unleash it.
Again I think the Netherlands can clock some good attack numbers against Turkey.
Germany vs Spain was imho the best match so far of the tournament with both teams progressing the ball up and down and countering successfully playing good link up football between defence, midfield and attack. Short passes, long-balls, combinations, overloads, crosses from the wings and so on... all tools utilized.

I feel Germany should be getting a better score. Nagelsmann tactically to me was more sound.
In General play, Germany pressed well, making Fabian Ruiz not have a strong influence on the game, it was largely an Olmo show.
With the Subs, Nagelsmann again wins that. He got every sub correctly esp when they equalized, the decision to balance his team out once again was the logical thing to do.
De La Fuente, could have made better tweaks to take control of the MF, he subbed of Yamal too early (in spite of the laws) and brought in Torres instead of Oyazarbal or Zubimendi making Carvajal & Rodri struggle against Musiala.
Then he took off Morata & Williams to early too & the players were played out of contextual position.
    Lucky to have gone through.

Spain nearly lost due to shifting to way too defense shape after scoring. when i saw subs that were coming, i knew Spain will be in big trouble. And soon it happened.
I also did not see any sense in having Merino as a second striker, because while yes, he's a decent header, he did not contribute or help team, and if not for the goal, we would be talking about very poor performance. He could be used in midfield to break up passes and win tackles, but they kept Ferran there. I also do not see any sense having Joselu and Ferran, if you're not even getting balls to them. Everything relied on Olmo, who had a brilliant game.
Spain had luck this time, but they aren't comfortable with defensive style of play, espiecially without having very good CBs. I hope they learned that they have to go all out with French, because the longer they keep game open the higher chances that they will fall out this time around.

Since the opening goal by spain Germany was clearly the better side. Taking Gundogan out and putting in Fullkrug and Wirtz completely changed the game. Fullkrug and Havertz had so many great chances, if they were a bit luckier it would've been something like 3-1 Germany.
Additionally Anthony Taylor was being completely biased, we see multiple times a German player goes down and play goes on for 2 minutes. Then, when Laporte goes down because Wirtz "bumped his back" on a forward run, play is immediately stopped.
Never let English refs adjudicate a Germany match.

    • @georgezee5173

Are you joking with the referee stuff? He forgave several yellow cards to Kroos during the match, one as early as minute 6, when he injured Pedri. Then, at the very end of the match, he added for no reasonn 3 minutes to the original 3 extra minutes, just in case Germany could equalise the game. In that uncalled extra extended time Carvajal had to force himself a second yellow card to stop a German counter attack.

@@georgezee5173 It is evident that whenever a German player went down it was "play on" and when they complained they got a yellow. Spain got much more lenient treatment. Yes, Kroos made some hard challenges, but they were fair. He got the ball.
There were also multiple challenges on Fullkrug while he was in the box that limited his ability to shoot properly. I'm referencing a shirt pull that pulled him down forcing him to miss the shot and hit the post. You're ignoring 3 other forgiven penalties.

I don't get why people complain, I think this was the most exciting game of the Euros so far even though the referee didn't have his best day. It would have been worth of a final. Both teams showed great possession of the ball and attacking football. The teams were absolutely on par with each other. It was great to watch. Sure Germany played physically harsher than normally but so did Spain. It is a valid standard tactic and was anticipated by everybody. Teams of the likes of Spain and Germany with their ball possession orientated style have to endure this regularly. Germany didn't go full Sergio Ramos and didn't play brutal. It was just bad luck for Pedri that he got injured when Kroos came too late to kick the ball. It wasn't a huge foul but would have been worthy of a yellow card. Kroos got lucky there. None of the teams was less sporting than the other. Carvajal confused football with wrestling against Musiala. There was much delay in the extra time, so of cause there had to be given additional minutes.
I fear that the next match isn't going to be that great to watch, France played rather dull so far even though very efficient. I think with Spain vs Germany we already saw the match with the most beautiful football to watch this Euros.

I'm not concerned with Le Normand being out because Nacho is back, but I AM concerned about Carvajal being out on a red because he's excellent. Unfortunately, the referee made the baffling decision to let the second half of the extra time go on for 50% longer (over 6 minutes more) when he originally said 3 (already too long). During this additional time, Carvajal had to sacrifice himself and commit a second yellow to stop a dangerous counter attack and prevent the gams from going to penties.
