    Honestly,i don't think you've watched many Ablett highlights if you think this is his top 10. There's 2 or 3 that would remain but there's at least half a dozen i'd swap straight out.

    Gary Ablett, greatest player ever. A one in a hundred year player.

    His mark @0:51 isn't anywhere near his most spectacular, but it is one of my favourites. Although both Essendon players give Gary plenty of physical attention, check out how they bounce off him! Too funny. Some frame-by-frame analysis explaining the awesomeness of that mark, if you're interested....
    1. Kickett's hip area gives Gary's right thigh a good old nudge as he is airborne grabbing the ball, momentarily rotating his body and knocking him sideways.
    2. As Kickett launches in for the spoil he also makes good contact to Gary with his chest. Bear in mind that Kickett was a farking BIG UNIT. One of the most solid blokes going around at the time.
    3. Thirdly, Kickett takes a huge swing with his arm and hits Gary on the right elbow pretty much as he grabs the ball.
    4. Daniher takes a decent run up and hits Gary chest-on from the left, only to bounce off his granite frame, hardly bothering him.
    5. Daniher also negates Kickett's bump to Gary's thigh [described in pt.1, above] by making contact in the opposite direction.
    6. Daniher gives Gary a big whack just near his left elbow at the same time Kickett whacks his other arm. You can see both Gary's elbows noticeable jerk inwards as a result, yet Gary maintains his bear trap grip on the ball. What a BEAST!
    7. After the whack, Daniher grabs Gary's left arm and pulls him crashing to the ground.
    8. Possible because of Daniher's scragging, Gary lets go with his left hand and tucks the ball tightly with his other arm as he hits the ground and rolls backwards.
    Gary gets crunched between 2 defenders.... takes MULTIPLE hits to his legs, body, and arms.... gets dragged to the ground.... yet he completes the mark first bite. Simply amazing.

    think its impossible for any of us who grew up in his era not to be in awe of the things he did,that said No 1 grab over Pert was surely given because its simply a brilliant display of athletic genius, outrageous!! You can watch it over and over and still wonder how he did that s**t!!,the leap,the ride,the balance while spinning,the height..but control the ball? sorry Gazza not for me but like i said,mark given and happy with that because its pure magic,the mark you show to some one whos never seen the game and leave them scratching their head too.......

    • @chrisserong4966
      @chrisserong4966 4 года назад +1

      I’m a magpie fan and I’ve watched this mark countless times and for a long time I had doubts about whether he controlled the ball. Watching it again in slow mo the ball actually stuck high up on the right side of his chest and only dislodged when he hit the ground. I reckon you gotta pay that.

    He took a screamer against West Coast, either late 80's or very early 90's, I've only ever seen the print of it, but it is still the most amazing leap and mark I have ever seen of his. Really hope vision of it exists somewhere.

    • @footylovr
      @footylovr  Год назад +2

      Never took the mark I am sorry to say. I do have the vision. He leapt a little too early and tried to grab it with his outstretched arm and as soon as the ball dipped out of his grasp, the realization of the immense height he was at kicked in. Would have been 12 feet in the air. Landed softy though and was back up on his feet before anyone else (typical Ablett).

      In Gary Ablett Snr, we're talking about a guy who kicked more than a hundred goals in each season for three consecutive seasons, and won the Coleman medal as well...a record...in his thirties. He is rated by many as the greatest player in history. He weighed nearly a hundred kilograms as well. The marks he did, I put him in the same category as Jezza (yes, I'm a Carlton fan). The Jezza mark over Jenkins in the 1970 Grand Final first, and the "spiral" mark second are my first two favourite marks. There have been many great marks, but what I do is look at the quality of the player...both are the in the top twenty of all time. Jezza and Ablett clearly make the grade. Modra was great to watch and did a lot of great marks...no doubt about that, but at the end of his career...he was not at Adelaide F.C. Despite that, everyone's talking about GA.

    • @Antipodean33
      @Antipodean33 10 лет назад

      jaker5555 No doubt about Ablett snr being the best overall, but i was just commenting purely on spectacular marks, which Modra did with frequency

    • @Dd-cq4xv
      @Dd-cq4xv 9 лет назад +1

      Tony Modra never took a mark like the one Gary Ablett did. And if he did I'm sure there would be footage of it, and would of been played many times in highlights over the years, but it hasn't.

    • @hardtobeat84
      @hardtobeat84 9 лет назад

      Theres plenty of better Ablett marks not even shown here for some reason.
      Modra at his best was as good as Ablett, but he just wasn't as consistant often enough.

    3m09s no apostrophe needed in "screamer's" as it's a plural, not a possessive
    otherwise great

    • @jaker5555
      @jaker5555 9 лет назад +2

      And just as well, "remain's" too. Should be "remains". HTH, and thanks for the video. I rate Ablett's spiral screamer in my top two marks of all time along with Alex Jesaulenko's 1970 grand final mark. One is more difficult as it required the ability to continue to focus on the ball, while rising, spinning...and bring the arms in. The other is more graceful with a beautiful flowing leap.
