Desolators are a unique unit available only to the Soviet Faction, Iraq. For just 600 resources, Desolators are definitely worth their money. In most cases, Iraq is the only Soviet faction players choose.
Desolators are lethal against enemy infantry units and with their deploy ability they can be lethal against group of Tanks too. Desolator's deploy ability is one of the best in the game despite the fact that it can damage allies too. Radiating the ground in a large area can deal with any (with a few exceptions) infantry threat. They can quickly eliminate light vehicles and can greatly damage heavier vehicles.
Desolators are totally useless against buildings though as they can not deal any damage to them. Their deploy ability doesn't deal any damage to buildings too.
Having a good amount of health, self-healing at base level and being uncrushable, non anti-infantry tanks will have a very hard time against them.
The test in this video were very interesting and can answer lots of questions. Few things that we learnt for Desolators are:
• Desolators are immune to any source of radiation including enemy Desolators. A Desolator can not harm an enemy Desolator.
• Desolators can self-heal without having a promotion.
• Desolators deal the same damage when deployed despite their promotional status.
• Two Desolators deal the maximum amount of damage when deployed. Any extra deployed Desolator will no deal any extra damage.
• Many units such as Robot Tanks, Miners, Chaos Drones are immune to radiation.
• Their deployed ability not only damages submarines but also reveals them.

One thing is undeniable. Desolator is one of collest and most badass units in all game ever. No wonder Westwood used it as background for endgame stastics.

If you call that thing in RA3 a desolator then you didn't play RA2
At RA2 you can force attack ground while in deployed mode, make the desolator radiate its area quicker
And yes, that area become inhabitable for anything except miner, which I find it usefull as a sole base defender. I usually use it at kill vladimir mission
True, but only on the 1.0 version. It was later been patched after a few updates.
I always do this and it make my base bright as fuck.. and i spam those with like 5 of them

attack ground for minutes, the radiation can last longer after desolator died.. almost like eternal radiation
i once on skirmish map, Bering straight made whole map glow for more than 3 hours by using few groups of 3-4 desolator each and deployed and force attacked ground for few minutes and ground stays "hot" for hours, even enemy base got "neon lighting" , only units what survived on map more than few seconds ware desolators , terror drones, harvesters and kirows and far from shore ships but no new ships survived to get away
a good pick against yuri troops I feel, since they can't hurt each other, a small army can take down masterminds and or clones before the mindcontrolled desolators can cause any harm

I'm also surprised that the MCV lasted more than an Apocalypse tank.
Best way to deploy desolators is to deploy them in phase shifts. Divite the deployment frequency by the number of desolators and deploy them one by one.

Hi. Just to point out that if you try to attack the ground while the desolator is deployed, he will speed up his deployment much faster for the first few moments. :)

This is the true desolator intead of Uprising one. The desolator in Uprising should cost two times less.

Wow. The fact that allied amphibious transport died faster really surprised me
The thing with AoE is that the damage lessens the farther away you are from the target cell, in this case being the Desolator's deploy spot.
EDIT: the transport died off far too quickly. It should've stayed alive as long as the other two... The all have the same strength in vanilla rules.

has light armor type thus melts quickly. sov and yuri ones have heavy.
you forget desolator can still attack while deployed it put radiation on target in regular RA2
if you put like 30+ it will max their attack range. ez wipes
plus. if you put alot of them the radiation sometimes would be permanent.
You dont need meny desolators to create stronger nuclear field. There is known tactics when you dispatch desolator, stend up, move a little bit and then again dispatch desolator. Takes about 2 seconds and it is very useful.

in RA2, elite desolator can even withstand a nuke attack!!
My friend and I were playing and I spammed them and in a desperate attempt he nuked them, some of them survived.
No joke, he expirienced a micro-trauma.

These tanks have some pretty good Radiation shielding I have to say. Takes two Desolators to kill a vehicle faster than a lone deployed GI.
Which is also true IRL. Tanks attenuate gamma radiation by about a factor of 10.

Lore-wise, the miners are all controlled by robots. They only gave them voices for variety's sake I guess.

The theme and abilities are closer to the toxin tractor.
Generals tried to stick too close to realism so their infantry units were...meh to say in terms of creativity. Wasn't like the Tiberian or Red Alert games where you could train units such as Cyborgs and Tesla Troopers.
Try the Shockwave mod for C&C generals, he doesn't excatly have Desolators, but you won't be disappointed

Great Britain counters them in that regard, but that's one of the only few examples GB has for their specialty
They're expensive and vulnerable to snipers and air units. I would say they're balanced.
Sniper isn't the only counter though as a SEAL BF/Korea Planes can deal with them + you can use the faction slot for picking America's free fodder or French cannon

Wish you tested the strategy against tanks when you deploy them then immediately undeploy them for twofold damage.
so the tactic is to send 5 desolators on a truck then deploy them on enemy base?
That's actually one of the best counters against a Mirage Tank spam. You just have to hotkey the Desolators right so they can deploy fast enough before the Mirages torch them.
I used desolator to create fields that prevents units from crossing.
I achieved this by deploy desolator unit into the AOE attack mod,
then force attack the field next to the unit,
which triggered desolator to not wait before executing the next AOE attack.
After a minute, the field became so radioactive, that it usually got stuck and stayed like that until the end of the map. :D
(I did this in RA2)

One thing you missed: Desolators radiate the area faster if you deploy them then ask them to attack a nearby piece of land.

If it doesn't work on buildings, and you have protection against snipers amd other long range enemies, this troop makes a really good base defense. You just gotta move vehicles out of your base immediately
Hypothetically 1000 desolator deployed at consistency and intermittently, use your imaginations what will happened next, desolator will obliterated master minds and apocalypse as well. Even the Yuri's army liked conscript, Yuri clones, Yuri himself, brutes, gatteling cannons, light tanks, chaos drones, magnetrons tanks all were can't vanquish these units only snipers but moderately.........
It looks like the ability of multiple grouped Desolators only affects the amount of damage units take at various ranges, not necessarily at the focal point of the radiation area. It's unfortunate veterancy doesn't improve it. But well done on the tests. I knew how effective Desolators can be, but I never learned how effective in such depth.
I hate to keep asking you to do more tests (it's just that you do these tests so well), but I would add many things to this test at your discretion, or for the simpler questions, people can just answer them.
1. I noticed the Desolator IFV had a faster firing rate than the Desolators. With the primary weapon (because the ability would cause the Desolator to instantly win), how much fasterwould the IFV be at eliminating a massive group of infantry compared to the Desolator?
2. What units can safely kill a Desolator without getting harmed by the radiation? (Not counting immune, or airborne units of course)
3. How much more effective is the Desolator against vehicles at higher veternacy?
4. Another veterancy question: how much harder would it be to kill a Desolator at higher veterancy?
5. Are they immune to the initial nuclear blast, or just the radiation left behind? Similarly, are they immune to the explosion of Demo Trucks, or Suicide IFVs?
6. Terror Drones are also immune, making Terror Drones more effective compared to dogs against Iraq. Not sure if you want to include that in the test, or just change the description.
7. You may want to test this with the Chaos Drone (if you're even able to), but when the Desolator is enraged, does it undeploy, or stay deployed?
2. The Slave and War miner, and robot tank and Terror Drone. Chrono Miner can try crushing him, but IIRC the vanilla (both RA2 and YR) made hime uncrushable.
There's no way you can kill a Deso without harming your own troops unless you come from above or use immune units.
5. The nuke (both missile explosion and reactor explosion) is (code-wise) a high-damage weapon with a high cell-spread that leaves radiation behind. Think of the Dreadnought's/Boomer's/V3's missiles but with a larger AoE. And leaving behind radiation on an area as large as that AoE.
TL;DR: yes. In fact, I think a nuke might actually kill him (especially if he's in the target cell).
6. He probably forgot about it. Considering how usefull/frustrating they are to play against, I can understand :P

2. I meant are there any units aside from obvious artillery units like V3s that can kill him safely outside the radiation. Like Prism Tanks. Would they have the range to kill Desolators safely?

Good questions and those things could have been tested. Unfortunately, no matter how much I am trying to cover every possible variation I will always leave something behind.
If there was a way to notify everyone about the next video and getting ideas while working on it that would make it easier but few follow the FB page and no one replies on the forum topic anymore. :/
As for your questions,
1. Well the IFV attacks much much faster, it would be perhaps two times faster.
2. I would say the Flak Truck is one of the most effective. It deals high damage to infantry, it's fast and it can survive a lot of damage as demonstrated in the video. Not to mention that it's cheap as well. The Prism Tank doesn't have longer range than Desolator's Deploy Area of Effect but it can still attack from a great distance without getting much damaged even for it's low health.
3. Long story short, it's about two times faster with every promotion ( Elite is two times faster than Veteran and Veteran is two times faster than Basic)
4. If you attack Desolators with a non sufficient force like Tanks they can survive three times and more due to their self healing ability. They usually last so long that heal constantly. Otherwise they are like 40% more durable.
5. No they are not. If they are inside the explosions damage area, they will die.
6. Yup, forgot to include them :(
7. They would not Deploy. They will remain as they were until the effects of Chaos Drone are gone.
Well they should have attack classes like in the Warcraft 3. Nuclear attack should ignore armour becuase it ignores it unless it is made of lead in real life.

Is it more effective to have 2 desynced units ? So they fire of the AOE after each other, as it seems there is a limit where adding more radiation damage means little for the time to kill.
