This is from the Tavarua Tube Riding Contest in 1996. Shawn Briley got first, Mick Lowe 2nd, Pancho Sullivan 3rd, and Jon Roseman got 4th, including some Legends Gerry Lopez, Tom Curren, Shaun Thomson and Jim Banks. This was a very low-key free surf non-elimination event, with the top scores from the first 3 rounds qualifying for the 4 man final.

Back in 96 Tom and I were traveling together and we got stuck in Monsoon storms in Bali, we had to take shelter upstairs from a bank, which was still part of the bank. Anyway, in the morning, we stole a couple of pens and pencils-therefore Tom and I were bank robbers and we got away with it.

Watching this as a 41 year old surfer that grew up on this board style, it seems to allow for more "stylish" surfing? Maybe everyone is bias about the board they grew up on over the decades. On a second note, why does the "floater" seem to be an ancient manuever nowadays? A nice float over a section basically behind the wave, then drop back in on the other side. But its hard to compare against a backflip!

I saw Tom at Sunset in Dec 1995. He was like a God to me at 15. My Dad actually took Tommy to Rincon for his first time from Hammonds. Tom wrote about it. Anyhow love TC
