The best surfing of the 1970's filmed in Hawaii, California, and Australia. Fast paced, action packed, breathtaking surfing. Starring Larry Bertlemann, Gerry Lopez, Barry Kanaiaupuni, and Jeff Hakman.
Director: Hal Jepsen
Studio: Hal Jepsen Films
Nobody made it look easier with style than Gerry Lopez.
No leash. Appearing almost effortless. My “magic board” of the early 70’s had to have a lighting bolt on the bottom towards the nose.
I was a teenager and watched Gerry surf PIPE in the 70s, Lots of Hard Chargers with plenty of Talent and I salute them all, I think what made Gerry above the rest and earned Him the moniker of Mr. PIPELINE was His Seemingly relaxed and casual approach to that Wave which hid all of the work that Gerry did out of the water, Yoga, meditation and a Spiritual Mindset that allowed Him to be One with that Wave and move in it with FLUIDITY and STYLE, One of A Kind!!✌❤🤗
Gerry’s surfing is aesthetically sophisticated and timeless, surfing in tune with the wave, not attacking it. No anger, just flowing with the energy.
Yes, going with the natural flow of the world moving around him, literally
He made look so easy, was for him . Wake up have coffee, or some fruit walk few yards paddle a bit and drop any wave he wanted and seeing him was like a guy walking in a park
i cant believe he moved to oregon he surfed the best time at pipe those early years looked so cool
I totally agree. She is so smooth and graceful. And none of that horrible rail grabbing that almost everyone does today. The truth is the surfing back then was better, and I’m not being nostalgic. I know the equipment is different come up bigger boards are more stable. I hate all that stalling and everything they do now. But I do like the acrobatics!
Pretty sure the last time I was about to get tubed and I casually wiped my nose was.....never. Pure genius at work!
He was so smooth, so cool. They named a contest after him -- The Pipe Master.
at the 0:48 ....!@#$% are you fuvking kidding me...in that moment, to somehow have the audacity to be somewhat inconvenienced by the presence of some mist in his face under the lip of a giant blue spinning tube at pipe to stand tall and wipe that fuckin mist from his beautiful perfect face has got to be the single coolest fucking moment in all of surfing history without question....the face wipe...it is the most intense spectacle of surfing progression and was fucking amazing
If you surf very often (like Gerry!!) the same spot at that size you would be able to do that too. Gerry was the best at Pipe because he surfed there a lot. He is the master!
This may be the best surf comment ever on RUclips.
Gerry (Mr. Pipeline ) GOAT
It reminded me of a video I saw of some drummer playing an intense, fast tempo solo, and right in the middle of it he reaches up to push his eyeglasses back up. Never missed a beat. Gerry Lopez the Zen Master of tube riding!!
They should do one of the pipe contests as a single fin event one of these years.
I don't really like his surfing so much but his boards are amazing
Iam 68. And still have lighting bolts on everything I own ⚡️⚡️⚡️
King of style. The way he dropped that wave at 0:47 showcases how casual and non-chalant his approach to pipe was
a natural, self made, one of a kind.
I remember when I first saw Gerry Lopez at Pipeline,it wasn't only the skill but a spiritual way of being
Still trips me out he was in the Conan Barbarian film he did good job in there cool. Always went to the Lightning Bolt shop in back of Ala Moana shopping mall checked out the boards and pics of Jerry Lopez when we're kids.
Subadai, thief and archer.
@@dukecraig2402 It's Subotai. I love his line "He's Conan, he never cries, so i cry for him"

"Dinner for wolves"
Back in the 70's, my prized possession in my quiver was a Tom Parrish Lightening Bolt.
Gerry Lopez a pioneer pushing bounderies to advance a cause, and shaping the performance for the surfers of today at pipeline.
Did you notice? Did you? No one is wearing a leash ! No lifeguards...no jet ski rescues. Jerry and Rory Russell swam in. The outwash near shore sweeps you out as you fight to swim in. Had to be a strong waterman.
Mr. Casually drop to the bottom, carve a smooth turn back into the wall, draw a line and stylishly get spit out. The end. Nowadays everyone is doing the Butt Bumping Boogie, no flare.
Gerry Lopez, Rory Russell and Margaret Oberg team Bolt back in the day. True reps for the sport of kings. Blessings
Having surfed Ala Moana as a youngster, the transition to Pipeline was an organic process for success.
So soulful. Brings back memories.
0:47 gangsta mode activated,
this is the lord of the waves just god having fun the unique style he have his natural skills makes it spectacular
Gerry doing soul arches in the barrel without a leash...
I never get tired of watching Gerry Lopez just casually petting the kitty in the tube.
now thats music to surf by!!! Awesome music, legendary surfer, excellent vid
uumh thinking about that i would choose jefferson starship would fit cool songs like stcharles hot water all that spitfire album absolutely hippy
Yes, a good ear!
To hear firsthand from Gerry on how he and Jock and others figured out Pipe, listen to Jamie Brisick's TSJ Podcast interview with him. 50 minutes but so worthwhile! He's a great storyteller. ruclips.net/video/-JV0Qq0YbME/видео.htmlsi=JB0hHwuNCU9dIPRv
Great stuff but the music is unoriginal (Smoghorn again in a retro surf movie?)
ボルトのサーフボード憧れでした。数年経ってボルトジャパンでボードオーダーした時は嬉しかったな。ボルトジャパンの植田義則さんに憧れて義則さんモデルにしたのを覚えています。
How the hell were leashes not invented yet? I mean tie a rope between your leg and board, how difficult was that to figure out? Great surfing.
They had leashes back then, Jerry was a purist and felt incombered by them. BTW, if you never wipeout, why wear a leash?
a rope would result in some gnarly injuries
Because real surfing Is having to swim too if needed... respect and stoke were gained by surfing free..try It sometime✌️
Leashes are for dogs.
That music is awesome ...who-the-f*ck is it?
Smoghorn - Transparent Dream
getting as deep as the pros today. either you have it or you don't. still wondering what the secret sauce is for his boards...
He’s the one the really started the surf Mecca, such a natural style! You look at a lot of really good modern surfers nowadays and they look generic
They didn’t call him Mr. Pipeline for nothing 🤙🏼
no leash. had to stay balanced and graceful. choppers swam. leashes changed the whole game.
The peak surfing era, clean boards, no leashes hence crowds and kooks minimalised
And one more thing, no rail grabbing! If I’m the judge, and you grab the rail, your score is an automatic zero! This is surfing, not boogie boarding!
No Legrope… 🤷🏻 🙌 🏄🏻♂️
Those were days…☝️💀
Where is this footage from?
j clm: The pipe a secret spot?hum...lol.
Making it look so easy.
I love single fins, but i dont surf with it, cause i prefer tri or quad
Jerry's of course great. Sound track ruins the footage
