Back in the long ago, um, before cell phones... I used to sing like this with friends who were musicians - we'd go up in to the mountains in Oregon and just make music, all night long, by firelight... the trees sang with us and starts wheeled overhead... We used to reach for divine connection and the joy of doing this together was intoxicating :) I see this energy with you two artists. Beautiful.
Thanks for the amazing comment, Valerie! What you have experienced in the past, sounds quite magical and meaningful. @@SEIKILO Yes - I do spend time making music in nature! PLaying a small harp, and the free sky above :) Would also love to make more music in person again, with like-minded humans. Such wild times this last year or two... The music you all make together brings joy :)
Its crazy to me that you said this! I live out in the Oregon woods. My friends, and I go up to a mountain near my house nearly everyday to sing together.
As I remember it, the Seikilos Epitaph was written in 198 bc supposedly by a greek king for his recently deceased wife. It is carved into her mausoleum, and is the only surviving complete song from ancient Greece.
Hi, Rob. Seikilos Epitaph is the world’s oldest complete melody, including notation and lyrics. It was discovered in 1883 by Sir. W. M. Ramsay in the ancient Greek city of Tralleis, and it was indeed found engraved on a stele (tombstone). Seikilos was a poet and musician during the Hellenistic Greek period, and this song is probably devoted to a beloved female in his life (maybe his wife) or the Muse Euterpe. The original lyrics in ancient Greek are: Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου μηδὲν ὅλως σὺ λυποῦ πρὸς ὀλίγον ἔστι τὸ ζῆν τὸ τέλος ὁ χρόνος ἀπαιτεῖ. And here is an approximate translation in modern English: While you live, shine have no grief at all life exists only for a short while and Time demands his due. The actual tombstone with the Seikilos Epitaph is currently exhibited in the National Museum in Copenhagen. A Modern Lyric I Wrote To This Timeless Music
THE WORD OF GOD / SET TO THE IMMORTAL SEIKILOS EPITAPH
IN A WORLD OF LIES
SOME MAY FORGET
THE WORD OF GOD
SPEAKS TRUTH STILL YET
SUN MOON THE STARS
ALL NATURE PROCLAIMS
THE WORD OF GOD
FOREVER REMAINS
THE WORD OF GOD
FOREVER SHALL BE
ETERNAL TRUTH
UNIVERSALLY
IN A WORLD OF LIES
SOME MAY FORGET
THE WORD OF GOD
SPEAKS TRUTH STILL YET
THOUGH EVILS LIES
TYRANTS SUSTAIN
SPREADING HATE
WAR HUNGER AND PAIN
THEY LIVE TO DIE
IT WAS EVER THE SAME
THEIR CRIMES THEIR LIES
GOD WON'T FORGET
IN A WORLD OF LIES
SOME MAY FORGET
THE WORD OF GOD
SPEAKS TRUTH STILL YET
SUN MOON THE STARS
ALL NATURE PROCLAIMS
THE WORD OF GOD
FOREVER REMAINS
