at the begining it's so still and the camera is moving, it's almost like when a videogame glitches, and the animation for a character doesn't load, so the unanimated 3d model is just sliding around. really drives home how placid everything is probably 99% of the time before the light comes disturbing them
How amazing to live in this day and age. Even though times are tough right now to be able to see this is so amazing. I love octopuses and the dumbo octopus are just adorable. Octopuses are so cool and there is such an amazing diversity. Thank you for sharing this. Very cool.
The gentleman who is directing the cameraman is a real pro. Hearing him speak was simply soothing to my soul. What a delight to hear an artist at work! Wonderful clip, thank you for capturing and sharing!
A bit bigger than I expected, the short period when that measuring laser hit it did show that this was well over half a meter long. Most of the species I have seen here did look smaller.
That is an excellent question. I think it's an example of convergent evolution; different species living in the same environment, and evolving very similar traits to feed/move/sense/etc. So, you would be correct in noticing the similarities between the fins of squid and the fins of this octopod.
@@thereadersvoice I don't think you could call it divergent evolution as they all evolved from the same animal, it's more a question of whether they re-evolved the flippers or whether they just hung on to them when other branches of their ancestral tree lost them! I do love cases of divergent evolution though! 👍
From the description box: “Corps of Exploration spotted this cephalopod hovering above ROV Hercules as it explored the ocean floor 1,682 meters (5,518 feet, 920 fathoms) deep…” And then the guy said he was 20 meters from the bottom. @@mcbdllc2848
That's one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time! I really enjoy watching these critters swim around and have fun the way they do. I will always have fun with these critters and love everything they do. Thanks again and I will see you next time. 😁

we don't need to obsess over space aliens, we have plenty of deep sea aliens on earth already....from some angles when the octopus doesn't have its tentacles open, he looks like a sperm whale with the "ears" acting like the sperm whale's tiny pectoral fins.
Latin is used for scientific names for species. That's because: 1) Common names aren't great for scientific stuff, as the same common name can be applied to multiple species, many species have multiple common names and many species don't have common names at all, so using those would make things unclear. That's why it's useful to have scientific names. 2) Different languages exist, and having to translate constantly when talking to people from other parts of the world is not super great, especially when you consider the whole issue with common names on top of that. I doubt there's any kind of animal that has a common name in every single language that exists. That's why it's useful to have one name that can be used regardless of language. 3) Latin is used specifically because it's a dead language (and one of the more famous ones), so it doesn't really change these days, which means that the meaning of scientific names doesn't change over time.
The stunning clarity of the pictures always amazes me

Thanks for sharing gorgeous and graceful 🐙 7:59 am EST
Did the Dumbo's evolve their flippers or did other Octopuses lose theirs? Is it a hang over from Squids with their side fins?

This job looks very relaxed, watching funny creatures in the sea all day. Can I join this team? I'm tired of being a CTO, every day is a brutal war. 🤓
At 1:02 I thought it looks like a Purrgil (that would be a Star Wars Space Whale)
Thank you🫶🏼

Too bad they couldn’t get a up close or at least a way of us seeing it properly!!
Why do the humans have to talk so much?
omg becky girls.. please , tone it back and allow those with a a vocabulary commensurate to the imagery speak..
I throw a single stone at you
Why are these people spewing Latin non-stop, is this a sub from the Imperial Naturalistic Academy of Rome? Are we living in 111 AD?
It's the language of biology, simple as that.
