"Super Hummingbirds" premieres Oct 12, 2016 on PBS. Check local listings. www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/super-...
Spring is the time to nest for the Costa's hummingbirds, before the desert gets too hot. Both males and females are looking for a partner, but it's up to him to impress her. Though his back shimmers with green, it’s not until we get her point of view that we see his true splendor. He flexes the iridescent feathers of his mantle until they become a glowing mask of violet.

"How could she possibly resist him?
lol I thought the thumbnail was altered. Nope! They actually look that cool
"Eeey, baby. What's up? You wanna come with me to my nest for a cup of nectar?"
This is AMAZING!! I love it!! What a wonderful variety of hummingbird to share with the world!!
Impressive! I had no idea their colors were so intense!
Damn that was cold.
We have costas hummingbirds here in Southern Utah year round and I just adore them! Them and about 5 - 6 other species absolutely swarm my yard in the summer, and then the costas and anna’s hummingbirds stay for the winter. I have seen them doing their mating displays on my palo verde, and mesquite trees before. But you can never get close enough to see this beautiful display from the front! I’m so lucky to have these beautiful little octopus dinosaurs right in my backyard!
I've had hummingbirds approach my face several times in my life, but it wasn't till this last time that I got a good look at his neck. It really looks more like a bulging muscle than a feather.
Had to watch this because of the recent video from Daily Dose of Internet. It's just mesmerizing watching the dance. 😍😍😍
I too would like a theatrical performance before I have to go on a date with someone, these birds are on to something
Holy shit!!! I just saw this happen. I have 3 birds that visit me. Anna's hummingbirds. 2 male 1 female. Very friendly, the male or males, visits me almost daily and buzzes around my head and hovers over my hands. I just saw the female laying by the feeder and the male had his neck feathers sticking out and he was dancing. That's the only way I could describe it. I'm so sad I didnt get a video bc it was weird looking LMAO. But then I come across this and it was indeed a mating ritual. They better make me some grandbabies 🤣
Why wasn't it officially named as Cthulhu Hummingbird???
Lol I had a firsthand view of the entire courtship into the setting sun at 29 Palms. It was bedazzling indeed. I think that one had better game.
Trying too hard haha, poor guy
My little Humm Dinger was doing this yesterday morning. It is June and a bit late to breed, but my neighbor found a nest that had been attacked. I think they are trying a second clutch to make up for the lost one. He has been trying to get her attention for days - zooms so high I can't see him, j dives, ark swings, and the mating dance. We have 4 hummer feeders, two oriole feeders, and a plethora of hummer attracting plants to make a second clutch possible. Good luck, little ones.
That's NOT a bird that's a glitch in the matrix. His face is bad CGI from the phantom menace.
The hoops guys go through just to get laid.
That´s just magnificent! Nature is so beautiful! :)
Jack has me watching nature vids now...
