This is the 7th or 8th video I've watched after dropping my own fuel tank. Shortly after dropping mine I ended up buying a little Toyota 4 by at mine sat for almost 2 years all I was looking to find out is what hose goes where. I know that wasn't the objective of your video but after watching seven videos yours is the most detailed it gave me the information I needed. Good job partner keep it up.
Awesome video. Man does your southern hospitality just shine. Good guy right here folks. Thanks for doing the work to show us what this takes on a rusted out jeep. Now I'm not so scared
I have a 1995 YJ. I noticed that the tailpipe isn’t on your Jeep where mine is located. Mine is between the passenger side of the fuel tank and the rear spring shackle. Having the tailpipe in the way makes it a P.I.A. trying to drop the tank. I had to loosen the exhaust system to get the tailpipe to swing tight against the spring. Then, I was able to drop the passenger side of the tank in the exact same way, as you did. As a side note: on mine, there is also metal tailpipe shield welded onto the side of the skid plate; that also made the clearance really tight. Now I can work on my frame and follow your other videos and cut an access hole for future gas pump replacement and easily do the 15-20 gas tank mod - I really get a lot of good info from watching your videos !!! Thanks !!!!!!!!
Yep online I dropped the gas tank got the skid plate everything cut me a 13 by 13 square app so I never had to drop the tank again that gets me to my sensors and everything without ever having to drop the tank then I built me a piece of wood square wood that fits tightly in the 13x 13 square that way I never have to pull the tank again little pro tip there
I just watched your "Jeep Wrangler YJ - 15 to 20 gallon gas tank mod - FREE". It answered some of my questions. Thanks again for such a great and helpful site.
Thanks for a great video. With friends that have tools and experience we removed, replaced fill, vent, fuel pump lines, and return. Cutting the access was well worth watching your videos. The tips you give are great for inexperienced amateurs like me. Not having a lift on my Wrangler and with different tolerances/wiggle room to work made it more of a challenge. I loaded my jeep on my utility trailer to work on it, and followed safety precautions to the max.
Very good video and helpful. Level transmitter Rheostat didn’t work, pried off cover very carefully, used 2000 grit emery cloth on its wires and swing contact point. Ohm meter test showed good and attached harness gage one showed proper operation. Also put in your access door mod. Thanks, your videos are the best on the web!
Awesome video, that poor Jeep looks like she spent most her life in the Northern "salt on the roads" states, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, etc. You get just covered in rust trying to take out a bolt. Job well done.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the vid!! It was originally a Pennsylvania rig. There is tons of rust falling out of that thing every time I work on it. I've rebuilt (way over built) the frame with some scrap and new metal. I save pretty much just the outer skins of the tub and welded in a 3/16 plate floor/boat side mod. There really wasn't anything to save sooo .. built it for a trail rig toy.
This video was perfect for me. I have never owned a Jeep nor have I done any major mechanical work. Long story short, I had to replace the 4 cyl engine in my 1989 wrangler yj. Little did I know that when I bought a 1993 with a 6 cyl parts Jeep how much of an undertaking it would be. I have learned a lot along the way and thanks to videos such as this I am on the home stretch. Thank you for the very detailed video. And wish me luck when I finally get to turn the key that it will start!
If you have access to a motorcycle jack; it will help you bring the tank/skid plate down on a much larger contact area. Just something I learned from doing since I also ride bikes.
U can cut wedges to put pressure on tank when dropping tank instead of weight of tank ! Or plastic tree wedges for felling trees what ever works 🤘🏼👊🏼 put trap doors on mine as well or any others I do . Kool video
I'd love to see a video on tools you recommend for beginners to get. Would be nice to see your input on that, especially for the "save money where you can" jeep community!
That is a very good idea! It is going on my to do soon list! Thanks for a great suggestion!! I'll even give you a shout out for making the suggestion. Have a great day!
I’m in process of changing all of it , only problem I had was rollover vent seals . Mine were yuk melted . Did cut access hatch . Great idea for next time .
My fuel tank drop was such a pain, I put it back in one piece at a time, plastic tank first then skid plate 2nd. That way you can jack each one separately side to side. The trick for me was to put the straps on but punch out the steel anchors on the front side of the straps so I could feed them through the skid plate cut outs when I pushed up the skid plate. Then you just anchor them with a bolt or whatever your best idea is.
You probably dont care but if you are stoned like me atm you can stream pretty much all of the latest movies on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my girlfriend during the lockdown =)
Spraying lubrication before on all nuts, bolts, hose clamp and hoses, and letting it sit and saturate for awhile does wonders. If you were to replace the fuel vapor hose, would you use fuel or vacuum hose ?Thanks
I've done a few tank swaps/repairs over the decades the first was right out of high school with my 75 Maverick with nothing but basic handtools 2 of the bolts froze and had to use a hacksaw to cut them off...turned out the old 12 gallon tank was full of pin holes on one side of the bottom panel so swapped it for a 16 gallon tank from the salvage yard (straps to since both are different lengths) cleaned it all out slapped the new tank in and its been there ever since (yup still have the car)...with the tools I have now it would probably take no more than 30 to 45 minutes to pull and put back in (air tools FTW)...other ones I've done are 2 70's to 80's Camaroes and a mid 70s Cadillac ALL of them were a PITA lol but Rule number one with Caddy tanks EMPTY it fully first or your in for a loooong crappy day...those things are stupid heavy.
I've done several myself. Jeep YJs are no doubt one of the easier ones out there, rusty bolts or not. My son drove a 1996 Thunderbird for a while, you have to drop the tank to get the drive shaft out. The tank spans across the bottom of the car. Got to investigating farther and found that it was the rear CV shaft that was popping. WHEW!! I did not wanna drop that tank! My dad found that on late 90's S10 trucks that it was easier to pick up the bed than to drop the tank for a fuel pump. Thanks for dropping in and taking the time to leave a cool comment!!! Have a great day!
I have a crank no start issue on my 88 2.5L. Did your screwdriver spark test for CPS sensor. Have spark. Going to change fuel filter tonight. What other ideas can you suggest. 88 doesn't have check engine light and has the carb. Don't see any videos about fuel pump relays or fuses. Thanks! Your jeep knowledge is awesome. I rank you right there with the late great DieselTech Ron who was a 6.0 Superduty genius.
I cut that jeep in half and stretched it. It wasn't getting the factory tank. To put your tank back in balance it on a floor jack to hold it up in place. It makes the install much easier.
Great video… just a question, the plug ( 3wire) to the fuel sending unit, can this be unplugged without dropping the tank? ( issue is: i had a wiring harness installed ( included this 3 wire plug) at a shop ,said they unplugged it , reconnecting the new wiring harness plug, to the old one , to the fuel sender unit without dropping the tank, but I can not see how that would be possible, so IF you could give me any insight on this that would be great, I wanna make sure they did the job correctly. As it was very expensive. Thanks in advance!!
Thank you for this video. This afternoon I dropped the gas tank because I think the fuel pump has failed. I've also marked out future access panel that I'll be cutting tomorrow. When I removed the fuel pump I noticed a plastic tray that sits below the pump and I assume keeps the slosh back and forth to a minimum. That tray is broken and had it not been for the pump would have been floating around like the small broken plastic pieces. Any idea where to find one? I've looked and can't figure out where to find a replacement. Thanks for the great channel - your videos are great and easy to follow!!
Those little plastic trays are not worth having i had to drop my gas tank twice, the second time was because of that plastic tray. It warped and was hanging up the floater, making my fuel gauge useless.
I thought at first this was going to be one of those rare RUclips videos that goes right to the subject matter. But, no. Skip to 1:08. That having been said, there's a lot of useful info in this video and, compared to most RUclips videos, not much dead air.

Just found this comment. Sometimes RUclips comment notification drops the ball. I'll probably try the S10 column on Rust Bucket when I convert it to automatic floor shift. When I do that is the big question. Power Addicts is my main channel, true I should add more to the other one. I've got a few home projects coming up that could be a good addition to that channel. Have a great day bud!!
Hey chuck quick question is there a rite way or wrong way to hook up the fuel lines back up on the tank? Or can they go either way not sure which one goes where I have an idea just not 100% positive thx
Changed my fuel pump and now it keeps blowing out the rubber hose right at the clamp. Could the pressure regulator be bad? The hose is still flexible. Maybe bad?
Replace the hose and use fuel injection hose clamps. The FI clamps do not have the worm gear and grooved clamp band. It looks like a solid band with no grooves that uses a small bolt and nut to apply clamping pressure
Hello from Mexico, I noticed that my 1993 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 engine is equipped with a 15-gallon fuel tank and the pump you used is designed for a 20-gallon tank, could this affect its operation? The pump failed and the tank is in perfect condition.

I got a 90 yj with 6cly carb my fuel is alot smaller then this my is about 6in away from frame rails looks like I need bigger tank.what size tanks came a 90???
I tried replacing the fuel pump in my tank and went to AutoZone and anapa they said they had no listings for it I do find a the gas pump for the tank was there a certain part number you gave

I need to do this and proably replace my gas tank, my jeep sputters and dies whenever I go above 45 and I think I have rust in my fuel tank which clogged up a fuel line, so I'ma replace a bunch of fuel lines and my tank
If I would have done that job, every freakin' bolt would have been a bear. I'm impressed. You should be a cancer surgeon. If I was there when you finished, I'd be handling you a cold beer.. Good work, my friend.....
Bud, I got lucky on that one. When I dropped the tank on my other YJ, it was not that easy. I twisted 2 bolts in half and cutt another one out. Glad you liked the video!! Have a great day!
Now I know who to look up when I have YJ questions. You gave a lot of good advice in that well done clip. I watched it because I have some fuel tank problems. The video was great. I'll be watching more. Take care my friend.......@@Poweraddicts
Okay so you seem like you know a lot about jeeps so I was driving my Jeep and it’s 1992 yj and one day I was driving it and the rpm just keep jump as I was going down the road so I let off the gas and it died and now all it does is crank and won’t start again I been trying to figure out the problem but I can’t
First place I would start is the crankshaft position sensor. It is one of 2 sensors that will leave a Jeep dead in its tracks. The other sensor being the camshaft position sensor, which I haven't done a video on yet. Here is teh video for a crankshaft position sensor: ruclips.net/video/5QWJlb2Uf08/видео.html . Hope this helps!! Have a great day!
Being that you didn't say what year yours was. First you need to determine if you have the metal tank or plastic. Metal tanks are 15 gallons and your stuck with it unless you got great skills. The plastic tanks are 20 gallon, it just that sometimes Chrysler used a vent tube to limit the fuel to 15 gallons. Remove that vent tube .... you have 20 gallons.
LOL .. I can vouch for it not being safe to drive! I drove it across town and back. By the time I got back, the drivers side seat was sitting about 3" lower! I was afraid that I was gonna fall through the floor before I got home. Its now in the process of getting "re-born" into a play toy. Here is the playlist for the build: ruclips.net/video/sc7bhR2mEQA/видео.html . Yea .. driving that heap of rust was a bit scary!! LOL Thanks for droping in and leave a cool comment! Have a great day!!
Great video. Thanks. Can you give me the part number of fuel pump? Maybe you can give a pice of advice which pump to bay? Or give a link on eBay? I need an inexpensive but reliable one. No Chine))))))
Take the vin number of your Jeep to a Jeep dealer and they can tell you which tank is on your Jeep and the part numbers you need to replace anything in your tank.
Normally yes. That rig is gonna be a toy. I dont know if you have seen any of the other videos but I've already back halfed, stretched and has an 8.8 under it. I wasnt worried about breaking anything.
Thanks liked the video, I chose to watch this one to identify the location of the check ball or if one can be installed elsewhere in the hot fuel line?
Very good video and helpful. Level transmitter Rheostat didn’t work, pried off cover very carefully, used 2000 grit emery cloth on its wires and swing contact point. Ohm meter test showed good and attached harness gage one showed proper operation. Also put in your access door mod. Thanks, your videos are the best on the web!

Jumped on this project today, and this saved me time - great video, thanks!

One tube is the pressure line and the other is the return line. You have to get them correct.

Hello 😀They are both the same pumps. The only difference will be the fuel gauge sending unit that tells the fuel gauge how much gas is in the tank.

Thank you for that great video. If and when I drop my tank, I now know what it entails.
I have some questions. When filling my tank, the pump kicks out before it's full. I have to slowly fill it from there. (Over 20 liters)
What can I do to correct that?
Do you have the same problem?
I thought about moving the filler to the same position as the TJ and JK. What do you think of that?

Yep, sending unit is in the tank.
I got a 90 yj with 6cly carb my fuel is alot smaller then this my is about 6in away from frame rails looks like I need bigger tank.what size tanks came a 90???
They are factory 16 gallon tanks.
I tried replacing the fuel pump in my tank and went to AutoZone and anapa they said they had no listings for it I do find a the gas pump for the tank was there a certain part number you gave
Have my tank dropped. Cant get skid guard seperated from tank. Any suggestions
Bigger hammer? Spread the tank skid apart, it should separate from the tank.

Would you recommend not driving the Jeep without the two tank straps in place?
The tank may shift around on the skid plate and rub a hole in it. I personally wouldn't.

What is the bolt size?
Those wrangler tanks are the easiest thing to drop. I dropped one in about 10 to 15 minutes. Just 7 bolts and the lines
Yep, they are really easy to drop... as long as they are empty and not have to deal with the extra weight.

Has anyone replaced that 14 gallon fuel tank with a 19 gallon fuel tank? What were the problems?
Being that you didn't say what year yours was. First you need to determine if you have the metal tank or plastic. Metal tanks are 15 gallons and your stuck with it unless you got great skills. The plastic tanks are 20 gallon, it just that sometimes Chrysler used a vent tube to limit the fuel to 15 gallons. Remove that vent tube .... you have 20 gallons.
are you sure you are safe to drive that rusty bucket?
Get a bosch fuel pump
Take the vin number of your Jeep to a Jeep dealer and they can tell you which tank is on your Jeep and the part numbers you need to replace anything in your tank.
Thank you
Youre welcome!! Hope the video helps! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Have a great day!
Are you not a believer in soaking rusted bolts in a penetrant to help break them free?
Normally yes. That rig is gonna be a toy. I dont know if you have seen any of the other videos but I've already back halfed, stretched and has an 8.8 under it. I wasnt worried about breaking anything.
Thanks liked the video, I chose to watch this one to identify the location of the check ball or if one can be installed elsewhere in the hot fuel line?
Its in the fuel pump
Very good video and helpful. Level transmitter Rheostat didn’t work, pried off cover very carefully, used 2000 grit emery cloth on its wires and swing contact point. Ohm meter test showed good and attached harness gage one showed proper operation. Also put in your access door mod. Thanks, your videos are the best on the web!
THANKS!! Glad my videos help you!!
