VH 1984 Jump is what got me into the Synthesizer age. I saved up a long time for my OB-8 and my DK Synergy System II. I use them today for most of my creations along with some vintage Rolands and Akai synths. You nailed this song! Total respect to you for your talent!
@@colin8952 I was trying to mimic how it was originally recorded. Ed had a grand piano fitted with MIDI and connected to his OB-8. So whatever note he played on piano also played on the synth. I recreated that by connecting my digital piano to the synth via MIDI to do the same thing.
These van Halen songs are my favorites! You have such a great ear and hear every note . Dreams is so hard it took me many hours to learn on the keyboard it is not easy!
This may sound weird, but when that song came out, I used my WalkMan and un-plugged the headphone jack just enough for it to cancel out the mono and leave the instrumental only. Back then, I thought I was smart, but I know this song more from this melody than the vocals... Thanks
I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this was really good! Especially the opening sounded very close to the original cut, and your interpretation of the vocals on the piano was top notch!
Thank you! And actually, I'm just playing the keyboard part. Here's the exact same performance with the rest of the song: ruclips.net/video/E0HOtMXJuJA/видео.html
Edward would be so proud of this, man. Balling my eyes out right now because of how close your covers are to his. Would you ever consider attempting to cover the way it was played on some parts of the 5150 tour with it tuned down & that special intro he sometimes did at the beginning? (Montreal 1986 boot features this example).
Yes!! I was just watching this version with that special intro! Amazing job man!! If you can work out this extended intro that would be awesome! ruclips.net/video/JMKdgCLHDOU/видео.html
You work the keys on the VH songs like no other... Fantastic attention detail, from the instruments to the actual playing. I wish we could jam together, but since we are in different countries, I guess a RUclips collaboration will have to suffice? I am totally Subscribed to your channel! 🤟
Thank you so much! I actually played along to the original track. Here's another video where I removed the original keys and replaced them with me: ruclips.net/video/E0HOtMXJuJA/видео.html .
I'm so sorry I don't have time to make tutorial videos. But I do try to get clear shots of my hands so you can see what I'm doing, and youtube has an option to change the playback speed, so you can slow the video down to more clearly see what I'm doing. I hope that helps!
Fact... When anything is played in that key it WILL fly off the shelves. Such a uplifting key and bpm. The only other song that I know of that was beautiful and rocked the billboard was Diane Warren's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" F#. crazy She used all the black keys.
@@inasimplerhyme Did he use another layer with the strings on the opening riff or it is a separate track? I can't tell if it's a piano or a digital guitar, or maybe even a real guitar. Kind of sounds like both to me on the original recording.
@@inasimplerhyme Ok, It does sound like a real guitar but super articulate and clean. Because i can hear some bends on the end of a few notes. I wasn't sure if that was a digital guitar and a bend wheel. Not even sure if synths had those in '85-86. I'm trying to learn the song with my new modx8. I've got it layered with strings and piano and it sounds pretty close. Good enough for me.
@@AchillesWrath1 I have another video where I'm playing along to the actual song. I used software to remove the original keys, but for the beginning, I couldn't separate out the acoustic guitar, so I had to recreate it with MIDI, since I'm not a guitar player.
Thank you so much! I'm not sure how long it took me, though each song has its challenges. (I learn by ear, not by sheet music.) But man, it's sure fun when you get it down!
@@malcolm77 Thank you! I didn't take very good notes when I was doing those patches. For the bulk of the song, the patch that's MIDI chased to the piano is a variation of A1, "Brass Ensemble." Mess with the Frequency, Modulation and attack release times. For the strings at the beginning that's playing with the acoustic guitar, I probably used C3, slow strings, but you have to shorten the attack time way down and mess with Frequency and Modulation. Hope that helps!
@@inasimplerhyme Thank you so much. Wish I had your left hand strength on the piano! How do you develop that? I really struggle with that left hand part. 😩
@@malcolm77 Thanks! I don't have an easy answer, I'm sorry to say. It's just practice. Maybe try concentrating on listening to the song while performing more than playing it. Also, I'm willing to bet you're being too hard on yourself. (Something I'm guilty of.)
Hey man! I love these sounds you're portraying in your videos. Would you be able to add some synth with the appropriate Ob-8 sound to an original song of mine?
Two issues: 1) Ideally you'd send me a midi file which I'd run to the synth, record the keyboard part and send it back, but I haven't taken the time to figure out how to hook up the MIDI to Pro Tools to do that yet. I can record MIDI data using the synth, but haven't done the reverse. 2) Just last week, 4 of the 8 voices only started coming out of the left channel, so I could only give you a mono file.
