Younger me never wore a PFD - older me, I have kids, work in fire rescue on a coastal island, been involved a lot of drownings, and horror stories of drownings. To me it’s about teaching my kids to be safer. Flip side is I am a believer a man can choose however he wants to leave this world? I’m not gonna tell ya to put your jacket on, unless you’re in my boat. The motor tether! Please use that, recent story man offshore trolling goes to P off the stern, falls overboard boat leaves him - luckily a boat did find him, he did have a vest on!! And they found his boat 12 miles away. Similar one where an empty boat was found and they followed the boats gps track Bach where it had come from and rescued its owner. Log comment sorry but yeah try be safe
I don’t believe in telling others what to do unless I think their unsafe boating decisions will affect others. I hope first responders never have to search for his body.

Man, i never took safety seriously until the last couple of years. In my late 30s with a wife and toddler. Now im Mr. Safety, life jackets on, kill switch cord attched to me when making runs, trolling motor control on my neck, and proper gear for sun, rain, cold. I also know the importance of my toddler being safe and kids dont listen well but they see everything. So its important we model safety not just preach safety. 🛟 🦺 Safety is so taboo because "we men know what were doing, nothing bad will ever happen to me." You being prepared means you're less manly in the eyes of men like that.
I think taking such things seriously is a sign of growth and maturity. We clearly know what’s really important in this life. Plus our kids naturally end up with us out there, and we gotta lead by example. Be safe out there, sounds like you are!
were you assigned safety monitor . i dont disagree with your observation of someone elses safety practices but mind your own buisness is what hes telling you . was he breaking the law , if not you really should just butt out
I would agree if he was just chillen at a boat ramp or something and I walked up and bothered him. He posted this thing he was doing on a public discussion group. If you don’t want a comment on what you’re doing don’t go looking for one.

At face value, you’re right, and that guy was probably a jerk. However, I think you’re genera view is limited. From my perspective, “safety culture” has invaded outdoor activities and has, in many cases, lead to people spending less time outdoors, which of course has its own negative consequences. I think bike helmets really help demonstrate my point. Wearing a bike helmet makes a lot of sense, right? Well, kinda. The Netherlands has the highest cyclist per capita rate and they basically don’t wear helmets. Australia has the lowest. Australia also implemented, a few decades ago, a universal mandatory helmet law for all cyclists. So, maybe you’re thinking, people don’t like wearing helmets so they cycle less, that doesn’t mean it’s somehow less safe to wear a helmet. Well, that’s not entirely true either. When people wear a bike helmet they tend to have a false sense of security and take more risks. Similarly, drivers are shown to be less cautious when a cyclist is wearing a helmet. Now, kayakers aren’t cyclists but I think it’s a similar argument with similar issues. I really just presented the “anti ppe” side. My point is only it’s not as simple, wear a Pfd, it’s safer.
I would agree except participation in water based activities, specifically kayaking, have been trending upwards at an astronomical rate since COVID hit.
