      It's good manners to wait until everyone has been served so you can enjoy the meal together. Eating before everyone has been served shows that you must be ravenously hungry, or that you don't care about the communal spirit of a dinner party - the whole point of a dinner party is that everyone eats together.
      You're actually not supposed to show up to a dinner party hungry. The event is supposed to be more about meeting friends, family or colleagues than it is about food, so showing up hungry means you are putting the food ahead of these relationships. It is recommended to have a glass of wine or prosecco and a light snack before heading out for the evening - at least, that is the very traditional way of doing things, which I have to say I very much enjoy.

    • @avniprakash9879

      @@roisinnigcrainn7722 the surver can actually be instructed to get all the food at once or in order of prepration, even corse wise, so if the server is instructed to bring food in order of prepration that means your companions don't mind you eating before them

    I always find it odd that Americans don't hold their knife and fork when eating looks very uncomfortable to me but guess I'm just used to European Etiquette

    • @Phaedragon
      @Phaedragon 9 лет назад +32

      We were taught to keep one hand in our lap. Use the knife to cut something, then put it down. Change fork from right to left to cut, then left hand back in your lap, and right hand to feed yourself. Prongs of fork point up. No elbows on the table.

    • @HeloFeuilles
      @HeloFeuilles 7 лет назад +76

      +Phaedra Ovid that's funny cause here in Europe it's having your hands in your lap that is seen as very improper. you must have both hands on the table but never your elbows.

    • @louhan8624
      @louhan8624 7 лет назад +2

      Didn't know it was a thing for America, thought it's how most ppl do it. But I think we work both ways too. We put our hand on the table, but I guess we're just much comfortable to just put them on our lap most of the time while our dominant hand does all the work, since if we do hold a knife and not really use it, we don't see the point. But I agree, for someone who isn't used to seeing it, it's somehow awkward to see the other hand kept being lifted

    A few remarks after this rather poor and limited instruction on table etiquette:
    - in a restaurant a dessert spoon is brought to the table together with the dessert. Only in a private home a dessert spoon may be on the table already;
    - If restaurants would together with the salad forks also put a knife on the table to use with the salad, people who use both hands would be much more comfortable;
    - What is it with that hand under the table; that is an American habit from previous centuries used by poor people. Americans should have grown up by now and be able to use cutlery in both hands;
    - When you haven't finished your course yet but want to take a rest you put your knife at 4 o'clock and your fork at 8 o'clock on your plate. That way your waiter knows that you haven't finished yet and the waiter doesn't have to interrupt your conversation to ask if your plate may be cleared.
    - When you leave the table between courses you leave your napkin on the chair not on the table. That is a sign for the waiter that you will return, on the table means that you won't return;
    - It is still polite for a man to stand up when the lady leaves and returns to the table;
    Table etiquette is an unspoken language used so not to embarrass yourself and others, as well as discreetly signaling the waiters how you have progressed with your dinner and how you wish to continue.

    • @anmnou

      "Americans should have grown up by now and be able to use cutlery in both hands". The most educated Americans do not know how do this and they have no idea how utterly dumb it makes them seem...such a turn-off.

    • @WateverWatever04
      @WateverWatever04 7 лет назад +1

      Walkeranz I think it depends on the layout of the restaurant. Usually at the restaurant I always go to, they don't usually reach over you unless you're sitting somewhere that they can't reach behind you, but of course they will always say "pardon my reach" before they extend their arm. For example, if you're sitting at a regular table then they can always reach behind you but if you're sitting at a booth or half booth they can't usually reach behind you.

    Wow! Everyone has so much comment on this video criticizing the woman, although she is the one who go to this kind of restaurant regularly compare to the critique. Well, it is common for people who rarely go to high end places to think that they have to be proper and all. However, unless it is a state dinner, you don't really have to become a robot!
    Today's etiquette has changed so much because of globalization, since people from different world has different standard of etiquette. What you think as polite in your part of the world might seem impolite somewhere else; you have to learn to accept other people either way, and the way your boss/business partner won't be stuck on your dinner etiquette but on your performance in your job.I think this is what this video wants to convey.
    The most important thing is knowing your utensils and avoid being disgusting (such as farting, scratching, talking trash, burping, and ignoring your meal partner).

    You should learn how to hold a fork.. Also the dessert spoon is NOT the soup spoon.

    speak quietly in a restaurant, don't move your mouth as much as she does, don't put too much on your plate, don't leave your napkin on the table when you stand up (but aside or even tucked closely beneath the dinner plate, ...), etc etc

    The establishment looks amazing, the atmosphere reminds me a lot of the first two seasons of Sex and the City.

    Etiquette says if you get up an intend your return leave your napkin on your seat. If you get up and don’t intend to return put it by the side of your plate.

    Be on time for your friends too. Thinking they'll understand just tells them that they fall low on your priority list. Also, leave a little bit for lady manners. It's not about what you think. It's about what manners are. Good point about the phone. If you miss all the rest, at least have manners with your phone.
