    This is great. Good luck ladies! I hope it catches on in the USA. I intend to buy a Tiny House. I realize there are challenges and resistance to where one parks or builds them. This is so sad because Tiny House living is a great alternative. It's going to help millions. It's the future as far as I'm concerned. Not everyone needs tons of space and belongings. I know I don't.

    As a student, paying rent, this would be an amazing option to explore! The flexibility and opportunities of living in a tiny home would be fantastic and honestly ideal for many people. Especially the younger population, who are aware how ruined the house market is. I would much rather pay for rent/mortgage of a tiny home than the over priced wooden apartments that we have no option to live in.

      Yea, but nobody talks about the sense of security with living in a mobile tiny home, especially when you a single woman on the road. Even living in such close quarters with a partner can take a toll. Especially, if you make it a social media business adventure. It can be a very scary endeavor. eg: Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie, from van life to end of life.

    Super interesting! I know my city, Kelowna, is working on densifying the downtown area, and are trying to plan for an increase in row houses or small apartment buildings. I can imagine there being lots of issues for both urban planners and tiny home builders in how to have conversations about what is best, but the first step is putting them on to everyones radar as a viable option!

    I am always amazed about your videos, the people you meet and the different houses/projects you share with us! Thanks for all your great work! I don't think we actually have tiny houses as such in switzerland (and I don't think it would be legal to live in them permanent) but houses are generally A LOT smaller here due to the lack of space and the very high cost for building land. So I really enjoy watching your videos

  • @remyllebeau77

    Good video. Such a shame they have to beg the government for the right to live and just be. They must want to force people to live in expensive houses so they can charge more taxes. How can anyone say these governments are not corrupt?

      @NosumHseebnrido 6 лет назад +1

      Sylwester It is only that way if you are lucky enough to live in the right area. Even van dwellers have to do stealth builds if they want to stay in the city. You can't park and live anywhere you want, and that is talking about a normal looking vehicle, not a tiny house.

      @@palco23 Actually there is at least one regional district where you can not do it in a rural location. The TNRD had a long list of limitations on rural land including tiny houses which are considered an RV, and it is not legal to live in an "RV" in the Thompson Nicola Regional District

    My wife and I live in Victoria, BC, and have been looking to buy a tiny house for about two years now, but we are regularly blocked by poor regulations from the banks, government and insurance companies. It's virtually impossible to get a loan from any of the banks in BC to finance a tiny house, and the government will not recognize a tiny home as either a house or an RV, so getting proper classification for your home for insurance purposes is nearly impossible. We are ready to give up on the idea all together because the regulations make the process too difficult.

    How hard is it to purchase an acre of land zoned for a off grid tiny house build in Oregon backlands, with a water source, like a stream? I have $60.000 I hope it enough. My tiny will be tiny with a bed loft and an across storage loft. No stairs, hook up for propane. Tiny French doors on the side, and entrance door in the front. On the roof I'm hoping to have maybe a little flat area in the middle I can have a small deck. All the rest I plan to do myself. How much would I have left over?

    I live in Gibsons, BC, where the ‘radical’ concept of laneway houses has finally been approved - but that requires a foundation and is easily a $250k project (or more). I wish a model home and advocate would travel to every Town Hall in BC to walk all the old uptight politicians through it and teach them how wrong they are about our changing world! Modular/container/tiny homes are a viable future - we just have to get the old guard to get with the change!

    I am 100% behind their push for tiny homes. There were some tiny homes in east van in backyards, some lasted 2 years before the city inspectors gave them the boot and asked to remove. City of Vancouver property tax is the killer of affordablity here, they don't collect enough building permit fees and taxes off it to allow it. - even though they know its a good idea and help a lot of people. property tax so sky high it has to be passed on to renters, not the landlords faults, residential and small business are being driven out. cant afford to be here.
    c'mon vancouver! u copied portland with the bike lanes, follow them with allowing their tiny home community
    I would already have one built if I was sure it would be allowed to have it parked in friends property. grrrr!

      They could, it would just take some time to do, maybe the could just tax the lot owners and they keep that in mind while charging rent, it would be indirect but effectively the same, or the city runs the lots and take rent directly as tax.

    • @nadatodo
      @nadatodo 6 лет назад +3

      It could follow an RV or mobile home park, but tiny houses come with a sustainable philosophy, and their communities often include shared amenity spaces, gardens and the like. It often has me thinking why do trailer parks have such a bad rap, when in the end they provide affordable housing.

    • @macylouwho1187
      @macylouwho1187 6 лет назад +1

      Trailer parks have one problem that tiny houses do not-you rarely move a trailer more than once. It gets parked and left there. How often do you see a trailer getting uprooted and taken with when the owner decides to change cities? Pretty much never. They get left and resold. Tiny houses tend to be far more portable and get moved whenever the owner wants to. So they are more like an RV type trailer than a traditional trailer.

    It's weird to me that this is a thing because people have been living in tiny lofts and studios all over the world, including tiny huts and houses in rural places through the world. Nothing new. Yeah they are trying to make it look fancy like a dollhouse but it's not natural that way and apartments have been like that forever. Go to Japan and even Manhattan. And these fancy tiny houses are way over-priced. You can save money on taxes similar to a trailer park, but the price/sq foot is double. Even in an upscale neighborhood in America you can build a 2,800/sq foot/stylish house for $65,000 by buying material wholesale and searching around for different type of workers. Framing that size house is about $25,000.

    The only organized opposition to tiny homes and tiny home living that I can think of would be from large, well financed, powerful and politically connected builders and developers, and perhaps realtors who work on commissions from the sale of typical houses. The more expensive the home, the bigger their commission.
    But it’s really the developers who want tiny home culture to not succeed.

    I don't see how tiny houses are sustainable. They are built to last maybe 20-30 years, they require a large vehicle to transport, probably require propane or other fuel to heat/cool like any other place, and also require an additional vehicle, car rental or sharing, unless you could park one close to all amenities (rare). I would consider "affortability" as the only advantage over other living arrangements, only if you could park the house for free or cheap in a convenient location. What do most people do when they have disposable income? buy more things, help others or travel. Two out of the three are potentially not sustainable.

    • @Rebecca-fs2rg
      @Rebecca-fs2rg 6 лет назад +4

      There are many tiny homes that are fixed in place which last just as long as "normal" houses and are cheaper to build and maintain, they are more efficient to heat due to their size.
      It depends on what you define as a large vehicle, because I don't consider a pickup truck to be a large vehicle.(For smaller sized tiny homes that are built to be moved constantly.)
      Why would you need an additional vehicle?
      For the amenities you're probably not going to have a swimming pool (though you defiantly could if you wanted) but the basic such as water, heat, restrooms and electricity are easily contained even on the smallest of tiny homes.
      Almost any parking lot is a place to stay for the night, especially grocery stores, its not the most luxurious place, but it is convenient.
      Most people who have tiny homes have them so they can save money, I seriously doubt someone who was more willing to spent cash on things they don't need, would want to live in a tiny home anyway because their thinking is most likely "I can afford more space, I should have more space" rather than "I can afford more space, but I want to save for (Insert item or service here)". But those are just my thoughts.

    • @themoviecapo
      @themoviecapo 6 лет назад +1

      Rebecca just because a house is smaller it doesn’t mean is more efficient to heat or maintain. A larger building with many occupants is much more efficient and cheaper to maintain than several smaller units (economy of scale). A pick up truck is definitely a large vehicle that requires over 100 litres to fill a tank. Not very efficient specially when driving a large home behind it for only one individual. I have an electric car that requires 0 litres. Wars are fought over petroleum and resources. I guess you agree with me about tiny homes being more affordable only if could park for free and being stationary. My mistake, By amenities I meant stores, public transit, jobs, etc

    • @nadatodo
      @nadatodo 6 лет назад +1

      It does allow you to live smaller and with less impact. And while those on wheels need to be towed, they are typically meant to stay in one place for some time, just like a mobile home. They are moveable but are for permanent living. That said, they can be made from reclaimed materials and unlike a single family home that requires a lot of energy to produce and a ton of cars and trucks to go to and from site, it's a different pay off for a tiny one. They can be heated with a variety of energy sources, including electric. It's an option, and smaller spaces tend to be more green. They use less, require less and cost less. Cheers!

    • @themoviecapo
      @themoviecapo 6 лет назад

      I don’t know exactly how long the outer shell of a tiny house will last but definitely less than a brick house. Again, you are supposing that a tiny house is more efficient than a large house and that doesn’t apply in all situations. I currently live in a bungalow with 6 other people and if we were to each have a tiny house, the footprint would be much greater as you would need seven of everything instead of one. Shared accommodations are greener and usually cheaper.

      themoviecapo if they are well maintained there’s no reason they can’t last as long as a traditional house because the majority of those are not made of brick at all-but of wood and siding no different than a tiny house except for a concrete base the are sitting on. And as for heating, you’re off your rocker man. I have a regular house and good insulation and windows and my heating bill is astronomical during the cold months no matter what I do. Meanwhile my parents are now childless and living in something akin to a tiny house(but fixed to a permanent place) to make retirement more economical and they heat their place with a single standard plug in space heater. Their bill compared to mine? Next to nothing. I’m jealous of how little it costs them to live in that place. They conserve so much money per month compared to us that it’s crazy. Not only that but it takes them so much less time to clean/maintain which gives them more time for living as they want to as well as more money to do whatever they want to do (that maybe would have been a stretch for their budget before they downsized).

    The civil governments employees will say...What a great idea, I love this idea, they will smile and be nice and polite all the while knowing that the "higher-ups will say no,no,no......it will "feel" like they are listening and being positive and 'With Your cause" ...but in the end you will get a semi technical semi legal and semi opinionated answer as to why "Its not going to happen here..".Your being pandered to and appeased for their entertainment .... have fun with that...

      Think Big Live Little :) Doesn't seem like a big idea to some but to other municipalities it takes big thinking to go smaller. This is not only dictated by taste, but most developers and builders choose to build bigger because it makes more financial sense. The goal is to explore, from industry to homeowners, how can we build more sustainably, smaller and with affordability in mind. Perhaps prototyped architecture? Pre-approved designs? Backyard tiny houses as laneways? All options cities should be exploring. Cheers!

    They should get a hold of Randy Jones. He has started a tiny house community in Morristown, Tennessee. And he has a rain water recycling barrel where it has 3 filters on it just like the NASA program uses on the space station but with composting stools. He's going to be doing another tiny home jam in 2018 check his website for dates. www.incredibletinyhomes.com You can get good information on how he goes about all this.
    I'm telling you Randy is a go getter. He's on FB live a lot & has a RUclips channel. Your not listening to me.......

    Lol. I love this “minimalist” propaganda!!! Tiny home? You mean a trailer?!? Young people who are accepting living in trailers because government taxes/healthcare etc is taking the lions share of their wages!

      To each their own, ultimately. It's by no means the solution to the housing crisis, but for those who do want to live smaller, why not have these options available. Cheers!

      The difference between a tiny house and a trailer/caravan is that a tiny house is designed to be lived in full time not to be mostly used for short stays whilst holidaying as a trailer would be. They are built different for those purposes. Trailers have a serious lack of storage and everything is designed to be light weight not to last. You can build a tiny house as strong as a regular house but still the size of a caravan. Yes they are very similar but they suit different needs.
      As a young person living in BC about an hour from Vancouver i can tell you that the government is not taking the lions share of my income. Half the year i run my own small business and the other half i work for a large company and in both those situations the government takes very little of my income. "The government is taking all my money" is tired old excuse.
      I am choosing to go down the path of a tiny home because i want to live in a small home, with out wasted space like extra bedrooms. The town i live in only has Apartments (studios, 1 bdrm, 2 bdrm) that have no land or massive 4+ brdm mc mansions. If i want to grow my own veggies and have land around me to enjoy myself i have no options in the current system. A tiny house could give me that option.

      ChildrenOfWhistler I don’t know what your situation is but in the US the tax burden is enormous. If you want to live in a tiny home go for it.

    "less impact" Something that need to be build, will always have impact rather then something that is already builded. Imagine pice of land without urban envirment, just pure natural - trees, grass, no humans, tons of animals - if you gone build house there, you will have negative impact on enviroment, right? No matter from what you gone build it, and how efficient house it will be. But if you upgrade something that is already there(in town) like isolate old rusty house, you will have negative impact starting from now, over 'some' period of time, becasue destroying it to pices will have another ipact on enviroment(it would generat trash - building dust, and some of the rubish can not be recycled). Tine Houses cost less, and because of it, they are available to larger group of people - and thats it - let's not put to many "good things" to this box to expres it supperiority over everything that is out there. They are not answear to everthing. If we gonne look at the bigger picture, building 'new things' and leaving 'old things' so that time can crash over time and transform to more rubish on planet is not a good thing.
